They live in the moment, think in the moment, and hence have no sense of the future. Without a past there is no future.” ~Studs Terkel (Radio broadcast, National Public Radio, 2006) The volume you hold in your hands provides an instrument for considering the meaning of our nation’s maritime heritage as viewed through the lens of our nation’s national marine sanctuaries. Although only a glimpse, it allows us to consider the past and the future of the mosaic of American culture. “Fathoming Our Past” helps us define why our maritime heritage is important to us as a community and a nation. It also tells us about who we are and why it is worth our efforts to preserve and interpret heritage resources for future generations. At the National Marine Sanctuary Program we use a focus on heritage resources as a tool to encourage a way of thinking. “Fathoming Our Past” presents the compelling role of the ocean in humanity’s journey. We want to engage society’s attention and to excite the mind by telling stories that bring all Americans to look seaward. By refocusing our vision, we see the interconnectedness of the heritage and natural resources of the ocean. In this way NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary Program strives to propel the evolution of the discipline of maritime archaeology as a “means to an end” to help all Americans engage in behaviors that conserve our oceans.     CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF BELGIUM Nassau, Bahamas (Illustrated London News Feb. 10, 1864) By Ethel Nepveux During the war, the Economist was a workhorse for the Confederacy and her owners, the Trenholm firms, John Fraser & Co. of Charleston, South Carolina, and Fraser, Trenholm & Co. of Liverpool, England, and British Nassau and Bermuda. The story of the ship comes from bits and pieces of scattered information. She first appears in Savannah, Georgia, where the Confederate network (conspiracy) used her in their efforts to obtain war materials of every kind from England. President Davis sent Captain James Bulloch to England to buy an entire navy. Davis also sent Caleb Huse to purchase armaments and send them back home. Both checked in to the Fraser, Trenholm office in Liverpool which gave them office space and the Trenholm manager Charles Prioleau furnished credit for their contracts and purchases. Neither the men nor their government had money or credit. George Trenholm (last Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederacy) bought and Prioleau loaded a ship, the Bermuda, to test the Federal blockade that had been set up to keep the South from getting supplies from abroad. They sent the ship to Savannah, Georgia, in September 1861. The trip was so successful that the Confederates bought a ship, the Fingal. Huse bought the cargo and Captain Bulloch took her himself to Savannah where he had been born and was familiar with the harbor. The ship carried the largest store of armaments that had ever crossed the ocean. Bulloch left all his monetary affairs in the hands of Fraser, Trenholm & Co.

    Summer 2009 To The PoinT Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Chesapeake Folk Festival–July 25 The July 25 Chesapeake Folk Festival at CBMM is the one place to be to experience the essence, culture and traditions of the Bay. And it’s an opportunity that comes only once a year! This celebration of the Bay’s people, traditions, work, food and music offers a unique chance to enjoy hands-on demonstrations by regional craftspeople and live musical crab prepared a number of ways, as well as barbeque chicken prepared by St. Luke Church of Bellevue, Md., 10-layer Smith Island cakes, homemade ice cream, organic granola and organic coffee. A number of documentary films about living and working on the Bay will be introduced and screened throughout the day. “Eatin’ Crabcakes, Chesapeake Style” follows crab expert Whitey Schmidt as he lays down his commandments for eating crabcakes. “Chesapeake Bugeye” features Sidney Dickson and Dr. John Hawkinson and the log bugeye vessel they performances by the Zionaires, the New Gospelites, Chester constructed. Other films include: River Runoff, and the Raging Unstoppables. Howard, by Sam Hoyt In October 1969, American Heritage Magazine reported that on "September 1968, the schooner Caviare sailed up the East River to the [South Street Seaport] museum pier…" Thus began an almost 40 year, sometimes contentious, dia- logue as to the true name of the schoo- ner, involving a number of people. The primary question was whether or not Caviare was originally the Lettie G. Howard. Several facts were indisputable early on. Among them, Caviare was built by Willard A. Burnham (probably a rela- tive of current ASA member and builder Harold Burnham) at South Essex and launched in August 1891. In 1903 she was sold to the E.E. Executive Summary The 1960s discovery and recovery of wooden shipwreck remains from Watt’s Creek, Caroline County induced three decades of discussion, study and documentation to determine the wrecks true place within the region’s history. Early interpretations of the wreck timbers claimed the vessel was an example of a Pungy (generally accepted to have been built ca. 1840 – 1920, perhaps as early as 1820), with "…full flaring bow, long lean run, sharp floors, flush deck…and a raking stem post and stern post" (Burgess, 1975:58). However, the closer inspection described in this report found that the floors are flatter and the stem post and stern post display a much longer run (not so raking as first thought). Additional factors, such as fastener types, construction details and tool marks offer evidence for a vessel built earlier than 1820, possibly a link between the late 18th-century shipbuilding tradition and the 19th-century Pungy form.     1853 California Fractional Gold 25C, BG-209 Liberty Round PCGS MS64 R7- SKU: 25654786 Stock Qty: 0 Retail Price: $0.00 PCGS #: 10394 Product Description Article by Fred Holabird, March 25, 2013: SS Winfield Scott, sank December 2, 1853 This ship wrecked off the coast of Santa Barbara, hitting rocks off Anacapa Island, part of the Channel Islands. There was no loss of life, but the ship ultimately sank in shallow water. Recovery efforts were made immediately, and most of the treasure was recovered within a few weeks. In 1894 a second major salvage operation recovered as much of the metal parts of the ship as possible, possibly including the ship’s bell, in a private collection today. No mention was made of any gold or gold coin, as it was generally thought that the gold was recovered on the initial recovery effort of 1853. But divers in modern times using modern equipment went at it again in the 1950s—1970s, recovering even more gold coins, probably from abandoned passenger belongings. The first formal record of a fractional Cal gold coin from the Winfield Scott came in 1957. That coin now rests in the Smithsonian, discovered (and traced) in modern times by Totheroh, Bob Lande, and Ken Glickman. In 1967, a suction dredge was used on part of the site, recovering at least two gold nuggets, and an unknown number of coins. Skin Diver Magazine published an article about treasure hunting on the Winfield Scott by Dick Anderson in September, 1969. It enthralled Totheroh and many others. Later that year, it was reported that divers found and recorded other California fractional pieces, and the rush was on for more gold coin, which had worked its way deep into rocky crevices through gravity over time.

    1/14/2019 Felucca Letter-CC - Google Docs January 14, 2019 Dear Blank, I just got back from an amazing trip to Egypt. I took sixty students along with me. Man, what a nightmare getting everyone a passport and the proper shots. We took a 747 out of SFO, that’s San Francisco International Airport, and the flight took over TWENTY hours, twelve to London, a four hour lay over, then another four hours to Cairo. When we finally got to our hotel we were so tired we didn’t notice how nice it actually was. We spent three nights in the Four Season Cairo at the Nile. What a spectacular hotel! The pool is amazing with four hot tubs and a swim up bar. Of course, Mrs. M and I couldn’t enjoy the bar, except for a soda, as we were traveling with 60 rambunctious sixth graders, but...maybe next time. Most incredible though was finally visiting all the sites I been teaching my students about for the past 28 years. Finally, I got to see Khufu’s Great Pyramid at Giza and the impressive monument to Ramses II at Abu Simbel. But, my two favorite sites are actually less well­known. Both Hatshepsut’s temple at Dayr­al­Bahri and Senusret’s White Chapel have amazing stories behind their construction. My favorite site was Hatshepsut's temple at Dayr­al­Bahri. Hatshepsut was the first really powerful female pharaoh. She loved to be viewed as a man, and often wore a false beard, the symbol of divine kingship.
