Athletics is a part oi our American culture and of all athletics the fall season competitive sports are the most popular. Cortland is no exception. Here we regard intercollegiate sports as a part of the curriculum; the coaches fully qualified members of the academic faculty; the players, everyone, reg ular members of the student body who are in the game because they like to play, not because they gel scholarships or aid of any other kind. The game is the stake, the prize—may the victor be worthy—the loser strengthened.

AMOS ALONZO STAGG

By Leo Fischer, Sports Editor, The Chicago American President, of the Football Writer's Association of America

No matter how capable or fluent those of us in this sports-writing business may be, now and then we encounter something for which we find words entirely inadequate.

Such a task, for instance, as trying to write a "tribute" to Amos A10117,0 Stagg.

As a theological student, as a great undergraduate pitcher and football player at Yale, as a foot ball coach at Chicago for forty years and elsewhere for twenty more, as a life member of the Football Hides Committee since its origin, as a devoted husband for more than 60 years to an equally devoted wife, as the head of a gracious family, and as a loyal friend he has accomplished in his one lifetime the goals for which all of us strive.

As long as we can remember. Amos Alonzo Stagg has been an inspiration not only to athletics, but to the entire American way of life. All of us—writers, coaches, players, officials and fans—join in paying him this homage.
