A dialogue spanning 54 years between Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, two potters who have shaped the craft... Now in his eighties, Bernard Leach has compiled letters, tape- recorded interviews, articles previously unpublished in English and illustrations of the works of his friend and colleague, Shoji Hamada, into a documentary alive with ideas. The book takes the form of a dialogue, beginning with the two potters' pioneering years in England and Japan. Hamada speaks about natural materials and techniques, about inspiration, aesthetics and collecting, and about Coleshill, 1929: standing left to right: Leach, Soetsu Yanagi, his way of life. The friendship of two near-legendary men culminates Hamada; seated: Henry Bergen, No rah Brad en, Michael Cardew, in this profile of Hamada, who points a way for the craft world Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie's mother and sister. Below, kiln unload- today. ing at Hamada's pottery in Mashiko, 1969. Hamada: 'Beauty' is not in the head or the heart, but in the abdomen; it is beyond verbalization. If it is solidi- fied and produced as an object, then it is real. Leach: Hamada's pots articulate like an oak tree, the bones of structure are not concealed, the modulations of form are intuitive, and all his pots stand firm on their feet. The origi- nality is hidden behind the most direct and ordinary and it is born not of theory but from constant practice and dose familiarity with his tools and materials, with nature behind it all. by Bernard Leach preface by Janet Leach — with 88 photographs of Hamada pots 300 pages; 40 pages color, 40 pages b/w plates; 8-5/8" x 11-7/8" $50.00 HAMADpublished by KODANSHA INTERNATIONAL A SPECIAL PRICE FOR READERS OF CRAFT HORIZONS $42.50 plus postage and handling Please send me copy(ies) of HAMADA by Bernard Leach at the special price to Craft Horizons readers of Publications Department $42.50 plus $1.00 handling.
