I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his aid and friendshir. vii SUMMARY Purpose and Objectives of the Screen Education Project The primary purpose of this investigationwas to design and implement a variety ofscreen education courses in a public school system andto evaluate such courses in terms of their effects upon the students whoparticipated. The Screen Education Project (Phase I--1967-69),located at North Reading High School, North Reading,Massachusetts, demonstrated that the tenets and methods ofscreen education can be applied in a controlled situation andcan provide a planned opportunity for educatorsto observe, discuss, and to evaluate the work accomplished inthis project. The specific objectives of the project studywere: 1. To provide screen education forthe selected children of North Reading, Massachusetts. 2. To familiarize educators withthe principles and methods of screen education, by observingit actually taking place. 1 3. To evaluate the efficacy of screen education methods in developing: a. creative work in all forms of communication; b. discriminating consumers of popular art. 4. To determine which methods of screen education are most likely to produce the above results. 5. To ensure the continuance of research into, and discussion of, screen education work on a national and international scale. Methodology and Evaluation of the Project The design of the courses was formulated on the bases of Project Staff experience and available data. The Project Staff decided to approach the stated objectives in four main ways: 1. To teach screen education together with English skills and subject matter. 2. To teach film production to those students who were interested in such a skill. 3. To teach about the media and to seek to under- stand how they operate and perform best. 2 4. To demonstratethat the media could provide opportunities to approachsocial questions ina way that provided more immediacy,relevancy, and involvementthan the more traditional courses offered inthe social studiesarea. Thus, four courseswere developed for Year I(1967- 68) witha total student enrollment of 190(22.3 per cent of the student population),and threecourses were given in Year II (1968-69) witha total student enrollment of 210 (25.06 per cent ofthe student population). During the first year of the Project,the followingcourses were taught: Fundamentals of Film:Designed to grow out ofa close study of thenature of the film mediumand related literary forms andcorrelated with ninth-gradeEnglish

    2013 • NCAA Final Four • 2014 NCAA Championships – Prairie Dunes Country Club – Hutchinson, Kansas Tigers Make Historic Run to NCAA Final Four The Tigers competed at the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships for the fourth time in five seasons after tying for fourth place at the NCAA Columbia Regional hosted by the University of Missouri. They then earned the No. 3 seed in the match-play tournament for the national championship by tying for second place in 54 holes of medal play at the NCAA Championships with a team score of 4-under par 836. LSU defeated the No. 6-seeded UCLA Bruins by a score of 4-1 in the national quarterfinals before falling to the eventual NCAA Champion Alabama Crimson Tide in the semifinal round to wrap up their best NCAA finish in nearly 50 years.     Fourth PTinting THE RAMAPO MOUNTAIN PEOPLE DAVID STEVEN COHEN Photographs by Robert Goldstein Northwest of Manhattan where the New York-New Jersey boundary crosses the tree- covered ridges and hollows of the Ramapo Mountains there is a group of about 1,500 racially mixed people who have long been referred to by journalists and historians as the "Jackson Whites." In a study combining the disciplines of an- thropology, sociology, folklore, and history, David Cohen found that the old stories about these people were legends, not history. He found no reliable evidence that their ancestors were Tuscarora Indians, Hessian deserters from the British army, escaped slaves, and British and West Indian prostitutes imported by a sea captain named Jackson for the pleasure of British soldiers occupying Manhattan during the War for Independence. David Cohen lived among the Ramapo Moun- tain People for a year, conducting genealogical research into church records, deeds, wills, and inventories in county courthouses and li- braries. He established that their ancestors included free black landowners in New York City and mulattoes with some Dutch ancestry who were among the first pioneers to settle in the Hackensack River Valley of New Jersey. In describing his findings and his experi- ences, Professor Cohen shows how their ra- cially mixed ancestry, their special family and kinship system, and their intergroup attitudes and folkways distinguish and socially isolate these people as a separate racial group today, despite modern communications and trans- portation and their proximity to New York City.
