Joining Conor onstage at the Beacon Theatre, on Monday, December 8th at 8 p.m. will be Natalie Merchant, The Felice Brothers, Laura Marling, The Lone Bellow, and Jonathan Wilson. Natalie Merchant, first known as the voice of 10,000 Maniacs, is an activist and singer-songwriter whose best-selling albums include Tigerlily, Ophelia, and this year's Natalie Merchant. The Felice Brothers, like Merchant from upstate New York, are infectious live performers who released two of their albums, The Felice Brothers and Yonder Is the Clock on Oberst's Team Love label. In her brief career Laura Marling has released four albums, three of which have been nominated for Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize. The Brooklyn-based trio, The Lone Bellow, who have earned critical acclaim for their soulful songwriting and supple harmonies, will release their second album in January. California musician/producer Jonathan Wilson has released four albums as a solo artist and produced numerous albums, including Conor Obert's most recent, Upside Down Mountain. Our world has experienced unprecedented disruption since we last gathered in the spring of 2020 in our beautiful venues to witness exquisite music, dance, and theatre together. I am absolutely thrilled to share our plans for celebrating the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s historic 25th anniversary season throughout the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022. Our silver anniversary season will feature a variety of acclaimed guest artists—some new to us and some returning favorites—with an equally wide variety of personal life experiences. They will come to us from across the United States and several different countries. Their experiences inform their work, and we will, for a brief moment in time, commune together as the universal languages of music, spoken word, and movement unite us in hope and healing. Over the course of five years, Natalie Merchant researched and wrote Leave Your Sleep. She adapted the poems to music, collaborating with more than a hundred musicians. She transformed the work by creating an exquisite picture book with Barbara McClintock. It was at this moment that I knew this extraordinary work needed to be in front of children – all children, but I didn’t know how it would come to fruition. It’s a stacked bill featuring a few rock ‘n’ roll legends, folk and soul upstarts and even a handful of local acts. There will be music happening on three stages and everywhere you look there will be something incredible taking place. There are also going to be after parties going on in the heart of the town. For you to know who to check out and when, here are my Top 10 Acts to see this weekend: 10 ) Winterpills (Sunday 1:10pm @ Four Rivers Stage) One of the locals on the list, Northampton, Massachusetts, folk rock act Winterpills have incredible harmonies that stick with you and never let go. When Philip Price and Flora Reed combine their voices beautifully, stunning things happen. The band possesses soothing acoustic-based rock music that has as much power and emphasis as an act that’s fully electrified. I’m excited to see how Winterpills are live, and I know a bunch of others are as well. Check them out to start the last day of the festival off right. 9.) Shakey Graves (Saturday 7:35pm @ Green River Stage) Shakey Graves is the moniker of Alejandro Rose-Garcia from Austin, Texas.
