Deolinda Alejandro Escovedo & The Sensitive Boys Mountain Stage® from NPR is a production of West Virginia Public Broadcasting August 2011 On The Radio Stage Notes August 5, 2011 Lizz Wright -- Embracing the history of jazz, gospel and rhythm & blues, Lizz Wright took the music world by storm in 2003 with breakout performances at Billie Holiday tributes and with her debut album “Salt.” Since then she has re- leased “The Orchard” and “Fellowship” which continue her musical evolution. On “The Orchard,” Wright penned many of the songes. “Fellowship,” which is available now, is a nod to her roots in gospel on the one hand and her gospel of eclecticism on the other. Fruit Bats -- Over the course of more than a decade, Fruit Bats have looked for ways to file down the cynical edges of modern life. Fruit Bats will be unveil- ing album number five this month. “TRIPPER” is a “collection of stories and thoughts on rambling, reinvention, avoidance of the apocalypse, suburban malaise, anti-Babylon back-to-the-landers, chaparral scrub, lopsided relation- ships, Florida beach bums, Stevie Nicks gypsy temptresses who smell like cloves, banishment from a Utopia, the attainment of enlightenment, and going home.” The Holmes Brothers -- With their soulful blend of gospel, country and rhythm & blues, the Holmes Brothers’ music is universal in its appeal and the band has Raul Midón won multiple Blues Music Awards. They’ve shared stages with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson and more. This is the group’s tenth appearance on Mountain Stage. The band’s current release, “Heaven is When- ever,” celebrates the struggles and the rewards of life on the road. Brooke Wagoner - With a sweet voice and piano playing that’s a cross be- tween Little Richard and Rachmaninov, the Louisiana native’s songs tell of a “lone 22-year-old girl, sagas of daily life and bits of poetry.” Her latest release is titled “Go Easy Little Doves.” Crooked Still - This Boston-based “alternative bluegrass” ensemble utilizes cello, banjo, bass and Aoife O’Donovan’s haunting vocal to redefine tradi- tional American music and has been called “the most important folk group to emerge from Boston since the Jim Kweskin Jug Band in the early ‘60s.” “Some Strange Country,” the group’s latest release includes four original composi- tions alongside innovative arrangements of traditional tunes. Matt White - New Jersey native Matt White writes songs that walk that tight- rope of pop, rock and folk. His current release, “It’s the Good Crazy,” combines his propulsive playing and sly wit. August 2011 On The Radio Stage Notes August 19, 2011 The Felice Brothers -- Honing their earthy sound in New York’s Catskill Moun- tains, The Felice Brothers have garnered a fan base that has taken them to all of this country’s major festivals and notable tours. Their new and fourth LP “Celebration, Florida” explores a multitude of sounds and instrumentation throughout the expansive album. It’s as steadfastly authentic as ever, expand- ing upon the dark, woozy undercurrent of ramshackle barroom blues, vaude- villian atmospherics, and surreal storytelling of their previous albums. Alejandro Escovedo -- Part of a musical family that includes former Santana percussionist Pete Escovedo and former Prince drummer/pop star Sheila E, Alejandro has led a succession of cutting edge bands. In the ‘90s, Escovedo struck out on his own and, after releasing a string of critically acclaimed solo efforts, was named “Artist of the Decade“ by “No Depression” magazine. His current release is “Street Songs of Love.” Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore -- Comprised of powerhouse singer - and Wheeling native - Mollie O’Brien and guitarist/husband Rich Moore, this is no mere “folk duo.” Their repertoire - and the songs on their debut “Saints and Sinners” - spans the range of American music from ragtime, jazzy blues, and gospel to Dixieland, tango and saloon cabaret. Adam Haworth Stephens -- The lead singer/songwriter for San Francisco duo Two Gallants, is known for crafting shimmering, intelligent folk pop tunes that have forged an intimate and emotional bond with fans. His solo debut, “We Live on Cliffs,” features cameos from members of My Morning Jacket, Blood Brothers and Vetiver. When Buckwheat Zydeco signed with Island Records in 1986, he became the first zydeco act ever signed to a major label. With good reason, Buckwheat Zydeco continues to be the most popular zydeco act on the live circuit. Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats -- As the original bassist in the Stray Cats, Lee Rocker has racked up some serious rockabilly credentials. After a string of hits that began in 1979 when the band relocated to England from Long Island, the Stray Cats disbanded in the mid-‘80s. Undeterred, Rocker and Stray Cats’ bass- ist Slim Jim Phantom then enlisted former David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick to form Phantom, Rocker & Slick.
