Als we naar films kijken dan lijkt het zo logisch dat het verleden zwart- wit is, omdat de eerste films zwart-wit waren. Of goudbruin, zoals het licht van Rembrandt en Caravaggio, laat zonlicht en kaarsen, en de eer- ste elektrische peertjes. Of uitgebleekt, zoals herinneringen kunnen vervagen met de tijd. Soms heeft het verleden juist verzadigde kleu- ren. Tinten rood en groen die al lang niet meer in de mode zijn, maar net zo warm ogen als het textiel waarvan de kleding van de hoofpersona- ges gemaakt is. Wol, katoen. Materialen die kleuren absorberen. Werd de wereld pastel toen de stoffen synthetisch werden? Er is niet één kleur voor het verleden. In het verleden heeft de zon vast ook wel eens zo fel geschenen als op dit moment, terwijl ik in een S-Bahn in Berlijn, hoog langs de Alexanderplatz raas. Hoe zal het heden er in de toekomst als verleden uitzien in films? Voor de onverbeterlijke cinefiel is Alexander- platz voor altijd verbonden aan Rainer Werner Fassbinder. -

Ik vraag me dat niet alleen af omdat de verkla- ringen over seksueel misbruik en grensover- schrijdend gedrag in de filmwereld begonnen. (Alhoewel een toekomstige cultuurfilosoof vast zal tegenwerpen dat het met onthullingen over seksueel misbruik in de katholieke kerk begon, waardoor we meteen de twee grote domeinen van troost en verbeelding uit de westerse we- reld te pakken hebben, maar daarvoor zijn de wonden van velen en de verwarring alom nog te vers). Maar ik vraag het me ook af omdat film, en breder andere audiovisuele massamedia, waarschijnlijk ook een rol spelen in het in stand houden, creëren, vergroten en verheerlijken van deze verhoudingen. Als Mark Cousins in The Story of Film zegt dat de filmgeschiedenis sek- sistisch is ‘by ommission’ dan moeten we ons misschien ook afvragen of seksisme niet de ‘default mode’ van de filmwereld is. -

The world depicted in the film is inspired by the photographs of German artist Stefanie Schneider in that it combines the notions of reality and fantasy and explores the resonance of both within a desert landscape and a transient culture. The characters portrait in the film, (an actress, a singer, a DJ, a motel owner and his wife, a US army soldier, a mystic, a princess, a recluse, a movie ticket seller, two hitchhikers, a doctor, and so on), are to be played by both actors and non-actors. The story is constructed through the interpretation of real life communications (i.e. phone calls, emails, conversations) that have taken place as the individuals depicted in the story try to make sense of events that have occurred in real life.
