DAVID THOMPSON (April 30, 1770 – February 10, 1857) David Thompson was an early British-Canadian fur trader, explorer, surveyor and mapmaker. His adventurous spirit and wanderlust took him across North America by land and by water. Along the way, he mapped over 4.9 million square kilometres — almost half of the continent between St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes. It’s an achievement that made him the greatest land geographer who had ever lived. Known to Indigenous people as Koo-Koo-Sint, “The Stargazer,” we like to think of him as a trailblazer. The Shoe & Canoe Public House is an homage to his sense of adventure as he traversed the mountains, rivers and plains nearby.
