Introduction This report is one of a series covering the length of the 1825 Stockton & Darlington Railway. It results from a programme of fieldwork and desk based research carried out between October 2015 and March 2016 by Archaeo-Environment and local community groups, in particular the Friends of the 1825 S&DR. This appendix covers the second 5.1km (3.17 miles) stretch between the Gaunless Accommodation Bridge at West Auckland and Shildon (figure 1). It outlines what survives and what has been lost starting at the north and heading south east to Shildon. It outlines the gaps in our knowledge requiring further research and the major management issues needing action. It highlights opportunities for improved access to the line and for improved conservation, management and interpretation so that the S&DR is a visitor destination of national and international importance. © Crown copyright 2016. The Globe The Journal of the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway Issue 4 December 2017 The Globe is named after Timothy Hackworth’s locomotive which was commissioned by the S&DR specifically to haul passengers between Darlington and Middlesbrough in 1829. The Globe was also the name of a newspaper founded in 1803 by Christopher Blackett. Blackett was a coal mining entrepreneur from Wylam with a distinguished record in the evolution of steam engines. Predicting Locomotive Performance
PREDICTING LOCOMOTIVE PERFORMANCE . W. B. Hall. F R Eng., F.I.Mech.E. The more efficient locomotives tested towards the end of the ‘steam era’ had overall thermal efficiencies of around 7 or 8 percent when working at optimum conditions; that is, the work done at the drawbar was 7 or 8 percent of the calorific value of the coal burned. When account is taken of the energy losses from the boiler (mainly unburned fuel and heat carried away by the products of combustion) and of mechanical losses between the cylinders and the drawbar, the residual thermal efficiency referred to the cylinders could be as high as 14% or 15 %. By comparison, the efficiency of a perfect heat engine operating with similar steam conditions and exhausting to the atmosphere would be around 20%. The evolution of designs capable of the above performance had proceeded against a background of considerable mechanical ingenuity and engineering insight, but with an almost total lack of a theoretical framework for some of the more important processes involved. Mechanics and to some extent properties of materials were exceptions, but until the early part of the 20 th century the theoretical understanding of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and irreversible thermodynamics was not adequate to provide a theoretical framework for crucial aspects of design. Design ‘rules’ there were in abundance, but many were limited to only small variations from the test data from which they had been derived; most were purely empirical, and some were dimensionally unsound. The situation in the 1930s is well illustrated in a series of articles in the Railway Gazette by E.L.Diamond 1 which reviews both the nature of the problem and the many attempts to produce theoretical guidelines for design purposes. -
Camden Railway Station a Reminder of Incessant Government Under-Funding of the Nsw Rail System
CAMDEN RAILWAY STATION A REMINDER OF INCESSANT GOVERNMENT UNDER-FUNDING OF THE NSW RAIL SYSTEM These notes relate only to the history of the passenger facilities at the Camden terminus. The history of the branch line has already been published. Alan Smith, a long-time member of the Australian Railway Historical Society and a frequent volunteer at its Resource Centre, won the competition to choose the cover photo for these notes. It seems strange that Alan chose a photograph not of the terminus but of an intermediate station, Kenny Hill. Why? Alan considered that this was the “iconic image of the challenges that existed in the day-to-day operation of the Camden line”. Specifically, the photograph shows the absence of priority given to passengers when the train crew had to decide whether to convey people or freight. It should be of no surprise that people lost out. Bob Merchant took this undated photograph on a day when the steam locomotive simply could not succeed in climbing the gradient. In the composition of the train were two milk pots. They were next to the engine. There was no question of reversing the train to Narellan, shunting and then proceeding with the only the passenger car. Why not? Because the milk pots had to be attached to No. 32 Express Goods or there would be serious trouble for the train crew if the Camden milk did not accompany the other milk vans from Bowral and Menangle on the train. What! Passengers are voters. Not so much in 1963 when the line closed. -
