Is it , (a) 100 people (b) 1000 people (c) 2000 people The winning entry will be drawn live on Bishop FM on Saturday 2pm - 2:30pm. The Kynren sound and light show pictured in 2018. Texts are charged at your normal network rate. The winner will be selected randomly live on air on Bishop FM between 2 and 2:30pm on Saturday 11 September. The judges’ decision is final. There is no cash alternative and tickets are not refundable or transferable in the event of cancellation or late arrival. Bringing heritage to life 2 Friday 10 - Saturday 25 September Open daily (except Sundays) 10am - 4pm Exhibition: Through Soldiers Eyes Exhibition of works by serving personnel, Veterans and members of the Armed Forces community featuring DLI Collections and other historical works from WW1 to present day. This exhibition of artwork, photography, sculptures, oral, visual and written elements takes the audience on a journey of Armed Forces life in times of peace, conflict, repatriation, and rehabilitation and seeks to raise awareness of our Armed Forces communities who live among us. This is not a documentary of war, but a brief snapshot of personal journeys. It challenges perceptions of the Armed Forces. This project is funded by ; Armed Forces Covenant Trust; Bishop Auckland Town Council; Bishop Auckland and AAP and Community Foundation. Venue: Bishop Auckland Town Hall Booking: No booking required

Friday 10 - Sunday 26 September Daily Hours: 10am - 10pm Tuesday - Saturday, 4pm - 10pm Sunday and Monday Open Buildings: People’s Museum, Old Hippodrome, Railway Street Enjoy a trip down memory lane. Displays recall the heyday of the town through old photographs and memorabilia recalling the high street, football heroes and the railway. The People’s Museum is run by a small community group upstairs in the Grade II listed Old Hippodrome Theatre on Railway Street. Nearby you can see a huge mural of Stan Laurel and follow a self-guided Rail Heritage Trail (also available as a guided walk). Booking: No booking required Age limit: No under 18s

3 Friday 10 September 12 noon Town Walks/Tours: Rail Heritage Trail Guided walk by creator of the People’s Museum Michael O’Neill. The walk begins at the Four Clocks Centre on Newgate Street where visitors can access the Bishop Auckland Railway Exhibition. This is free of charge and has photographs, artefacts and the century- old Bishop Auckland station Union banner. From there we make our way to Bishop Auckland Railway Station where new interpretation boards explain the history and significance of the station before visiting Albert Hill to see the tranquil community-led Remembrance Garden, and finally to Railway Street and the People’s Museum (free entry). Saturday 11 - 18 September 10am - 4pm Sonic Bikes - Head of Steam Museum Are you interested in bikes, air quality or just wanting to try something new? Sonic Bikes is an innovative project by the Bicrophonic Research Institute (BRI). It centres around bikes that make live sound and music based on passing air pollution as you cycle. We are hosting these in collaboration with Creative Darlington, Middlesbrough Art Weekender, Sonic Arts Week and the Auxillary. Bringing heritage to life 4 Saturday 11 September 2pm - 2:30pm Opening event on 105.9 Bishop FM Heritage Show The first of three Saturday afternoon programmes during the festival. Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Action Zone has been established to revitalise the historic market town and to help regenerate it as a vibrant place for locals, businesses and visitors. It builds on the major investment at Auckland Castle which is transforming the traditional home of the Durham Prince Bishops into an international faith, art and heritage destination. This is a chance to hear more from Project Manager Anne Allen about projects that are underway and opportunities for conservation area grants and funding. Sunday 12 September 2:30pm - 3:30pm Town Walks/Tours: Bishop Auckland Local Listing Walks Walk with Local Listings Oficers Georgia Cundick and Ehren Smith to explore buildings and places of historical interest that may be nominated for ‘local listing’. The Local Heritage List campaign encourages communities to nominate historic buildings and other heritage assets which they value most for inclusion in their council’s local list, helping to protect them through the planning system. This is your chance to point out the places and spaces in the town that are important to you and to share your knowledge and memories. 5 Thursday 16 September 11am - 12 noon and 2 - 3pm Town Walks/Tours: Archaeological Excavations at Auckland Castle This summer, excavations by The Auckland Project and Durham University at Auckland Castle have cast new light on our understanding of the medieval castle complex. In the Faith Garden, we have uncovered more of the long-lost Durham University students excavating at medieval chapel, built in the 1300s for Bishop Auckland Castle, 2021 Anthony Bek. On the Broadwalk, remains of an early medieval castle have been discovered including a two or three-storey tower – a keep – thought to date from the 1100s. Guided by John Castling, Archaeology Curator at The Auckland Project, tours will cover both areas of the excavations. Thursday 16 September 11am - 4pm Open Buildings: St Anne’s Church, Market Place Come and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of this Grade II listed church. Built on the site of a medieval chapel, St Anne’s was designed by William Thompson and built by William Edgar in the 19th century. There will be a prayer station and the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one. Booking: No booking required

Saturday 18 September 10am – 12 noon Town Walks/Tours: Down the Batts Bank Guided walk led by local historian Tom Hutchinson. Starting from Bishop Auckland Town Hall, this circular walk is set against the backdrop of the Eleven Arches Kynren site. The route takes in three historic bridges - Jock’s bridge, the Viaduct and Newton Cap Bridge and shares stories of the people for whom the riverbank, known as The Batts, was home. Bringing heritage to life 6 Saturday 18 - Sunday 19 September 12 noon - 3pm Open Buildings: St Andrew’s Church, South Church Explore this wonderful Grade I listed church with its beautiful stained-glass windows and Saxon cross. The ancient parish church of Bishop Auckland was built on a Saxon foundation. The current building dates from the 13th century. It was added to by the Prince Bishops Bishop Bek and Cardinal Langley. There will be a prayer station and the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one. Booking: No booking required

Saturday 18 September 1pm - 2pm Book launch: Bishop Auckland in colour postcards. Local historian Tom Hutchinson unveils a new collection of 100 images and postcards of the town from the to the first decade of the 21st century - with added colour. 7 Saturday 18 September 6pm - 8:30pm Lates - The Golden Age. Locomotion Shildon Enjoy some 1920s- and 1930s-themed fun in our Heritage Open Days evening event. Come along after-hours for a museum experience with a diference as we celebrate a period of great innovation on the railways. Learn more about the vehicles in our collection with connections to the 1920s and 1930s golden age of rail. Use our 1920s/1930s props and costumes to create themed selfies. Have a go at our fun fairground-style games and activities. Check out our railway-related playlists, and enjoy refreshments with a 1920s/1930s theme. Bringing heritage to life 8 Wednesday 22 September 11am - 12 noon Talks online: An Introduction to Caring for Historic Properties with Conservation Architect, Graeme Dodd Aimed at owners and tenants of pre - 1919 properties, this talk highlights some of the challenges of repairing and restoring old buildings – and how to apply for grant funding to bring vacant buildings back into use in the conservation area and high street. Saturday 25 September 10am - 3pm Stockton & Darlington Railway Birthday Celebration, Stockton High Street Large marquee in Stockton High Street with 30 traders and exhibitors where you can discover the history of the S&DR, ‘The Railway that Got the World on Track’, find out about our fantastic rail heritage and how it is being kept alive, and see in action model railways including attendance from Shildon Model Railway Club (with two layouts - “Shildon” and “Thomas”), Small Gauge Railway (from Preston Park, with at least one 7.5” gauge loco for static display) and the S&DR Youth Team, who will also bring their model railway layout. The Stockton Flyer will make its usual appearance at 1pm with extra performances planned for during the day. Saturday 25 September 2:30pm - 3:30pm Talks online: Binchester and Roman County Durham Join County Archaeologist David Mason as he answers questions about his new book on recent archaeological discoveries and the insights these provide into life in the Eastern Hinterland of Hadrian’s Wall. At Binchester Roman fort and associated civilian settlement archaeologists have uncovered some of the best -preserved Roman buildings in Britain, altar stones and artefacts including a beautiful silver finger ring from the 3rd century. Sunday 26 September 10am - 4pm Family Fun Day - Head of Steam Museum Join us to celebrate the Anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Activities include travel back in time with the Victorian Time Travellers, mini train ride, model railway, arts and crafts and music by the Ran Tanners. Contact John Raw 01833 663764, email: [email protected] Bringing heritage to life 12 Online Activities Available throughout Interactive storymap: Bridges of Bishop Auckland A virtual tour produced by Historic England of 16 of the town’s most interesting and important bridges, ranging from road to foot to rail, from fine Medieval masonry bridges to modern bridges of steel and concrete, from short iron trusses to great viaducts of brick and stone. These include the magnificent viaduct, the first railway bridge in England to be converted to carry a road. The bridge had been threatened with demolition in the 1980s but was saved following a campaign by a local action group - which later became the Civic Society. Built on the Roman Road Dere Street, Bishop Auckland traces its origins to a once-important Roman cavalry fort. Binchester has been the subject of new excavations in recent years. The film shows the partially reconstructed remains together with new excavations and archaeological discoveries at Auckland Castle, the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham.
