The "Savage" and the "Civilized" A closer look at the history and quality of the contact between European and Non-European cultures overseas from the early days of colonialism in the 15th and especially in the 16th century till now reveals that this contact has been characterized from the very beginning by the conviction of dominant superiority and supremacy of the Europeans with respect to the representatives of the overseas I This paper is based on field research on the Trobriand Islands in 1982 (5 months), 1983 (II months), 1989 (4 months), 1992 (2 months), 1993 (1,5 months), and 1994 (1,5 months). "Noble Savages" and "The islands ofLove" 41S1 cultures'. This conviction manifests itself in between two extremes: Overseas cultures experience(d) either intolerant damnation or pitiful recognition of their forms of civilization as being inferior with respect to European standards. The claim of European cultural supremacy was first of all based on the undoubtable military superiority of European weapons and warfare. However, it was also the prerequisite and the ideological justification for turning the contacted cultures into colonies to be exploited commercially by the respective European power and nation. Finally, this European position also justified, and allowed for, activities to 'civilize' these inferior cultures2 It is quite evident that this conviction of European superiority made any attempts to understand at least some of the characteristics of the contacted overseas cultures extremely difficult. Given this situation, it is quite interesting to note that with the very beginning of ethnographic reports on overseas cultures we find the picture of the 'good savage' emerging, a picture that was revitalized and made permanent for the discussion of representatives of overseas cultures by Bougainville's description of the 'noble savages' of Tahiti (Bougainville 1772: see also Kohl 1986:19). The 'civilized' European thus was not forced any more to deal with the 'savage' only: There was the 'noble savage' as well; and this other, this new 'ethnocentric' construction by overseas peoples' representatives allowed Europeans feeling somewhat uncomfortable within their own culture to project their ideals and wishes, their longings and hopes onto these 'noble savages' and their 'exotic' cultures that were assumed to be 'unspoilt' (so far) by all negative aspects of European civilization, its rules, its regulations, its powers, its repressions, and its moral standards. It seems that this "Unbehagen an der Kultur", the "discontents" of civilization - to use Siegmund Freud's famous phrase - had been strongest with respect to European standards of sexual moral and behaviour - if we keep in mind how e.g. Cook's, I For detailed information see especially BiHerli (1991), but also Kohl (1986) and Kramer (1981) 2 It goes without saying that all aHempts to 'civilize' the 'savages' involved first and foremost Christian missionaries. However, I do not want to discuss this topic here, bill refer the interested reader to Senft (1994 & in print). Forster's, and especially BougainviJle's travelogues with their descriptions of how the Tahitians enjoyed and lived their sexualiry in their South Seas paradise of 'La Nouvelle Cythere' were received by the contemporaries of these explorers and scientists in Europe. Thus, with the myth of the 'noble savage' Europeans combined from the very beginning an utopian construction of the ideal exotic person living a natural life in a society that was imagined to be completely free from any kind of repression. However, 'noble savages' were also imagined to have no problems in cuping with, and adapting to, European standards of civilized behaviour when being transferred from their 'exotic paradises' to European countries. We are easily tempted to look at the 'noble savage' myth with the implications briefly described above as being a mere historical fact, a past phenomenon these days. However, I will try to show that this is not at all the case. On the contrary, it seems to me that we are far from having outgrown this 'noble savage Utopia'. We still seem to misunderstand certain patterns of public behaviour and self-presentation, especially if these behaviour patterns are perceived as being erotic or even sexually arousing ­ as Cook and his crew and other first visitors to the South Seas did - disregarding that a closer look at these patterns would reveal important differences between underlying rules and more often than not rather strict regulations and the perceived form of the respective behaviour. Marshall Sahlins has convincingly summarized such cultural misunderstandings in his "Supplement to the Voyage of Cook; or, Ie calcul sauvage" (Sahlins 1985: see also Rensch 1991). It seems that in the South Seas bare breasted women in short grass-skirts, or athletic men wearing their loin clOths, joking with, and making fun of, Western travellers and tourists still invoke in these foreigners the image of an erotic or sexual paradise - although we should all know better by now. In what follows I l will use the Trobriand case to illustrate these points . Malinowski's "Sexual Life of Savages" and Reich's "Invasion of Compulsary Sex-Morality" In 1929 Bronislaw Malinowski published his second monograph on the culture of the Trobriand Islanders under the topic indicating title "The Sexual Life of Savages in Northwestern Melanesia". In this monograph the master of Trobriand ethnography describes in his detailed and comprehensive style aspects of the Trobriand Islanders' sexuality, covering among other things topics like sexuality and sexual behaviour in children, adolescents, and adults, sexual innuendos in games and everyday verbal interaction, sexual taboos, rules and regulations for marriage and married adults, sexual aberrations (from the Trobrianders' point of view, of course), forms of, and variation in, sexual intercourse, and so on. Although many parts of this book present a sometimes rather dry sociological account of the more often than not extremely strict rules that regulate societal/ife on the Trobriands, those paragraphs that emphasize the sexual freedom granted to children and adolescents and especially the general promiscuity of young unmarried Trobriand Islanders immediately got a reception that very distinctly reached beyond the circle of oceanists and general anthropologists. First, it seems, this reception remained within academic and literary circles, that is to say, psychologists and literati I referred either in a very detailed way or just in passing to Malinowski's research results. However, these references were soon picked up by the more popular media, especially by newspapers and other periodicals, and up till now the Trobriand I I jusl want to menlion Aldous Huxley here who mentions lhe Trobriand Islands in his novel "Brave New World" (1972:41) This novel was firsl pUblished in 1932, four years after Malinowski's monograph. Like many anthropologists or laymen before and after him, Huxley quoles one of the few mislakes of Malinowski's: The field-researcher mistook myth for faCI reponing lhal the Trobriand Islanders are ignorant of a man's role of "paler" as "genitor" (Malinowski 1929:3,69, 148ff); lhe fact lhal Trobriand women have heen using traditional contraceptives - some of which they just use(d) before having sexual intercourse being completely aware of why and for whal biological ends they did, and slilt do, lhis - proves Malinowski wrong. In 1983 and J989 my wife inlerviewed many elderly women in Tauwema who still enjoyed the joke Ihal their mothers were said 10 be unaware of lhe man's role as "genitor". The western half of New Guinea is known as West Papua and is a province of Indonesia. There are very few items from West Papua in Scottish collections. Archaeological evidence shows that human habitation of New Guinea began around 45,000 years ago with people moving east from Indonesia. Authenticity and Village-based Tourism in the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea Michelle MacCarthy Introduction Tina,1 a striking young woman of Iranian heritage, travelled on her own from Victoria, Australia, to spend two months in the islands of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG), with one of those months in the Trobriand Islands. When I spoke with her at length, Tina had been in the Trobriands for about a week and a half. She had stayed in the beachside village of Kaibola for a few days, and then travelled to Tauwema village on Kaileuna Island before returning to the largest island, Kiriwina. Tina organised village stays on the ground by asking around at the guest lodge and in the government station of Losuia. I spoke with Tina outside the small, local bush-materials house she was renting for a few days in Karidakula, the hamlet just 1 All participants were given the option, when briefed about my research and offered a Participant Information Sheet (PIS), to indicate their preference for my using their real name or a pseudonym.     2 Doing away with Doba? Women’s Wealth and Shifting Values in Trobriand Mortuary Distributions Michelle MacCarthy Introduction The activity on the bukubaku, or centre of the hamlet, is frenzied. Throngs of women bend over giant baskets called pweia, which may stand more than a metre tall. Inside these baskets, and piled high on shallow trays made of coconut fronds called sekunona, are hundreds and hundreds of bundles of small, dry strips of banana leaves. One after another, women go to the centre of the bukubaku and call out a name, and more women, generally members of the deceased person’s matrilineage, rush to throw their bundles—five here, 10 there, but always in increments of five—on the various piles. Each pile is designated as a sort of payment to those who have provided assistance to the now deceased while ill, and immediately following the death, and who are not members of the deceased’s matriclan (Figure 6). At times, arguments arise over how these bundles, along with accompanying payments in colourful lengths of calico and notes and coins in kina,1 are redistributed. Despite being instigated by a death, these 1 The official state currency of Papua New Guinea (PNG). 61 SINUOUS OBJECTS mortuary distributions, called sagali in the Kiriwina vernacular,2 are more festive than mournful, and are a place where women direct and control resources that they have laboured to produce, in order to demonstrate the strength of their dala (matriclan). The scene described above represents the general atmosphere of a sagali and, in my nearly two years in Kiriwina, I saw similar scenes played out dozens and dozens of times.

    4 Woodlark a people free to walk about Woodlark Island, over 40 miles in length and greater in area than Sudest, is lower and swampier than the other big islands of south-eastern Papua. Thick rain forest flourishes wherever the soil and drainage are adequate. The raised coral, mangroves, forest and small areas of garden lands of the west are divided from the east by the hills near Kulumadau in central Woodlark and the low Okiduse Range which rises at Mount Kabat in the north and culminates in a spear point of peninsula dominated by Suloga Peak. Inland from the mid-north coast and Guasopa Bay are extensive gardening lands. In 1895 the beach opposite Mapas Island was covered in stone chips, a clearing about a mile inland was strewn with more fragments, and beyond that near an old village site on the flank of Suloga Peak were acres of chips. For many generations men had mined on Woodlark, taking stone from rock faces exposed in a gully on Suloga and working it until it became a tool, wealth and art. The hard volcanic rock was flaked by striking it with another stone, ground in sand and water, and then polished in water and the powder coming away from the stone itself. At the old village site on Suloga and at other places on Woodlark were large slabs of rock each with a circular depression made by men grinding and polishing. In the most valuable blades the polishing highlighted a network of lighter bands, the result of the irregular laying down of the original volcanic ash.

GLASCOCK introduction Proposals that large-scale interaction and ceremonial exchange in the Pacific region began during the time of Lapita pottery (c. 3300–2000 b.p.) (e.g., Friedman 1981; Hayden 1983; Kirch 1997; Spriggs 1997) are seriously challenged by the extensive areal distribution of a class of retouched obsidian artifacts dated to the early and middle Holocene (c. 10,000–3300 b.p.) and known as ‘‘stemmed tools’’ (Araho et al. 2002). Find spots of obsidian stemmed tools stretch from mainland New Guinea to Bougainville Island and include the Trobriand Islands, various islands in Manus province, New Britain and New Ireland (Araho et al. 2002; Golson 2005; Specht 2005; Swadling and Hide 2005) (Fig. 1). Although other forms of tanged and waisted stone tool are known in Melanesia (e.g., Bulmer 2005; Fredericksen 1994, 2000; Golson 1972, 2001), the two types defined by Araho et al. (2002) as ‘‘stemmed tools’’ comprise distinctive classes because they usually have deep notches that delineate very well-defined and pronounced tangs. Type 1 stemmed tools are made from prismatic blades and have large and clearly demarcated, oval-shaped tangs.   • An Exchange System Among the People of the Trobriand Islands Of
    Kula An exchange system among the people of the Trobriand Islands of southeast Melanesia, in which permanent contractual partners trade traditional valuables following an established ceremonial pattern and trade route. In this system, described by the British anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski, only two kinds of articles, travelling in opposite directions around a rough geographical ring several hundred miles in circumference, were exchanged. These were red shell necklaces and white shell bracelets, which were not producers' capital, being neither consumable nor media of exchange outside the ceremonial system. Kula objects, which sometimes had names and histories attached, were not owned in order to be used but rather to acquire prestige and rank. Every detail of the transaction was regulated by traditional rules and conventions, and some acts were accompanied by rituals and ceremonies. A limited number of men could take part in the kula, each man keeping an article for a relatively short period before passing it on to one of his partners from whom he received the opposite item in exchange. The partnerships between men, involving mutual duties and obligations, were permanent and lifelong. Thus the network of relationships around the kula served to link many tribes by providing allies and communication of material and nonmaterial cultural elements to distant areas. Pacific Islands. Trade and exchange systems The regional trading systems of the islands around the eastern end of New Guinea were particularly elaborate. In the Massim--what is now Milne Bay province of Papua New Guinea (taking in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, the Louisiades, and nearby islands)--the trade of pottery from the Amphletts, canoe timber and greenstone blades from Murua (Woodlark), carved platters and canoe prow boards, and other specialized products was complemented by a flow of yams and pigs from resource-rich areas to smaller, ecologically less-favoured islands.

    8 Local agency and William MacGregor’s exploration of the Trobriand Islands Andrew Connelly At the time of British New Guinea Administrator William MacGregor’s first visits to the Trobriand Islands in 1890 and 1891, the islands had been frequented by whalers for over 40 years and by traders for over a decade. However, this long history of European encounter and exchange in the Trobriands failed to result in the construction of a body of knowledge available to MacGregor, since many encounters were not recorded or were buried in ships’ logs, published information was widely scattered, and some regular visits were kept secret. Because of this, MacGregor ventured into an informational wilderness to ‘discover’ the islands for himself. On the other hand, these previous exchanges had produced a local body of shared knowledge that shaped his reception by Trobriand intermediaries, especially local chiefs who attempted to recruit him into exclusive exchange relationships. If not unrecognised by MacGregor, then at least unreported were the surely numerous interactions between Trobrianders and his Polynesian and Melanesian companions, whose presence and conduct would have been as significant for Trobrianders as MacGregor’s was. 161 BRoKERS AND BouNDARIES William MacGregor was born in Scotland and completed medical studies at Edinburgh, gaining his certificate in 1872. He then joined the British colonial service as a medical assistant, working in the Seychelles and Mauritius under Governor Sir Arthur Gordon, who encouraged him to take on administrative tasks as well. It was here that he first developed an interest in ‘native’ affairs and welfare. While recognising traditional and customary knowledge and systems, the methodology encouraged increased participation of resource users in decision-making. This was achieved by empowering community members to assess the awareness of their problems and to develop a plan to solve these problems. The community developed a marine resource management plan that included conservation and development objectives, and associated actions, to achieve the sustainable use of their marine resources. The community-based management methodology was successful in mobilising the community to take some actions to conserve their surrounding marine habitats and resources. As in other uses of this management approach, it is clear that certain conditions need to be met in order to increase the chances of developing and sustaining successful community-based marine resource management arrangements in the Trobriand Islands in the future.
