We're about a year and a half into Skydeck, and I just want to thank you all for your continued support of what we're doing here. It means a great deal to us. But I wanted to ask a favor, too. Francis Tapon was off to a bright tech career after HBS, working at a Silicon Valley startup before stings at Hitachi and Microsoft. But his penchant for travel became irrepressible, and he left the corporate world to pursue that passion full time. His long list of travels includes hiking the Appalachian Trail, walking from Mexico to Canada and back on the Continental Divide, and completing two three-year tours of all 25 Eastern European countries. We caught up with him recently in Tanzania, where he was wrapping up perhaps his most ambitious project yet, a five-year tour of Africa, which included visits to all 54 countries on the continent. Francis, was your interest in travel something you always had, or was it a kind of revelation? TAPON: It was in my DNA from the start, because my mom is from Chile.

Keeping Hope Alive: One Woman—90,000 Lives Changed. (Somalia) The moving memoir of one brave woman who, along with her daughters, has kept 90,000 of her fellow citizens safe, healthy, and educated for over 20 years in Somalia. Dr. Hawa Abdi, "the Mother Teresa of Somalia" and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, is the founder of a massive camp for internally displaced people located a few miles from war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia. Since 1991, when the Somali government collapsed, famine struck, and aid groups fled, she has dedicated herself to providing help for people whose lives have been shattered by violence and poverty. She turned her 1300 acres of farmland into a camp that has numbered up to 90,000 displaced people, ignoring the clan lines that have often served to divide the country. She inspired her daughters, Deqo and Amina, to become doctors. Together, they have saved tens of thousands of lives in her hospital, while providing an education to hundreds of displaced children.

    April‐June 2012 JOURNAL OF EURASIAN STUDIES Volume IV., Issue 2. _____________________________________________________________________________________ TAPON, Francis Eastern Germany — Nearly 25 Years after the Wall When rats experimented on humans Although humans like to experiment with rats, there was a time when rats experimented with humans. The rats took a bunch of humans who spoke the same language, shared the same history, and looked the same (at least to a rat’s eyes). The rats split these nearly identical humans in two groups. The rats were only interested in measuring the impact of one key variable, so they left one group of humans alone as their control group. The rats, however, injected the second group with something called communism. Once the effects set in, the rats left the lab, turned out the lights, and would not return for over 40 years. The results of the rat experiment were remarkable. After just one human generation, the two groups of humans hardly recognized each other. The first group had not changed: they were still competitive, creative, and hard‐working. The communism‐infected group, however, was nearly the opposite. In that group, state‐owned enterprises earned 97 percent of the total net national income. The few non‐state businesses were taxed up to 90 percent. The state bore 80 percent of the costs of basic supplies, from bread to housing. The state was everything. All this altered people’s behavior. They got married early because it took less time to get a state apartment if you were married. They also tended to have children at a young age because the state guaranteed childcare and employment.
