PIPELINE.ISSUE.62.PAGES.02/03 editorial The G8 Summit in July failed to agree a mandatory cut in greenhouse gas emissions. It has been widely condemned as an opportunity missed and so our planet continues to warm. With the summer now finished we’re gearing up to campaign for an embracement of offshore renewable energy devices and to introduce some radical changes to the way the water industry plans its investment. Both are needed to prevent much of the hard work we’ve done being undone because of an increase in water pollution incidents relating to changes in climate. With another packed out and memorable SAS Ball behind us the campaign season is back! Thanks for your support. RICH HARDY

ANIMAL BEACH BALL The Animal Beach Ball events stormed the North Cornwall coastlines for the 3rd consecutive year. This years events took place at Fistral Beach & Polzeath. The general public were entertained at each event with plenty of surfi ng, mountain bike shows, live music & evening parties. As part of both events the SAS Tag Team surfi ng competition took place - Sunday’s SAS tag team event in Newquay attracted the crowds with hundreds enjoying its entertaining format. Low A GREENER BALL swell meant that the competitors took to the water on foamies, giving the pros a chance to show what can be done on a beginners board! The event was reduced to a 30 minute contest to add a tactical edge, with each team fi elding 4 surfers, one of whom was able to raise their hands and claim a “double whammy score.” They each had to take three waves and the whole team had to have competed for scores to count. Team SAS won, the team of Sarah Bentley, Luke Patterson, Joss & Reuben Ash who kindly donated half of their £500 to SAS. In Polzeath the teams resumed to using normal surfboards as the surf picked up, it was a monumental display by Winter Wonderland to score 43.5 that saw the Winter brothers and Lee Bartlett take the title way ahead of the rest. Boscombe Pier was the venue for this fun event that took place on Saturday 2nd July. A small windswell greeted the paddlers and was enough to provide a short shorebreak session after the paddle for everyone involved. A big thanks from SAS and the RNLI beach Lifeguards to all those taking part and in sponsoring the event which has helped to raise awareness about the clean and safe seas message.
