And just when you think you couldn’t possibly be any more parched, a woman with thick pigtails, who is wearing a traditional German dirndl, hands you a tall, foamy-headed golden pilsner and you think to yourself, “Wait! Have I died and gone to Heaven? Does everyone get a drink ticket after they die?” No, friend, you haven’t ascended to the pearly gates and this is definitely not a dream; you’ve just happened to find yourself at Key West Brewfest, an alcoholic oasis among the palm trees and the heat waves coming off the scorching pavement. Think of Brewfest as Key West’s inter- pretation of Oktoberfest in September (don’t ask questions; we do what we want down here). As though it’s any surprise for a reputedly hard-drinking town, Key West Brewfest, now in its eighth year, has become a hugely successful event over the course of its lifetime. A self- taught California dreamer, Massey used blogs, cookbooks and the irreplaceable inspiration of her family to become the chef she is now. “We grew up poor, but food was always there. My Dad was always com- ing up with gourmet meals from noth- ing,” she remembers, “Food just runs in the family. Even my sister has her own food blog.” However, it is another blogger who she gives credit to for the concept of her first dish, the Cali Bowl, a colorful coco- nut basil-dressed combination of rice medley, kale salad, heirloom tomatoes, season broccoli, almonds, lentils, crum- bled goat cheese and grilled chicken in a coconut basil dressing. But before LoveGrub was even an idea, her first experience with the culinary world takes us back to Laguna Beach, when a local at a bar where she was working invited her to become a private chef. She moved first to Colorado and then followed the job to Key West almost two years ago before leaving for another opportunity back on the West Coast.
