Limmud Programme December 2018 Limmud Programme December 2018 Join NIF at this year's Limmud festival where we'll be presenting sessions on a number of thought-provoking issues. NIF advances democracy and equality in Israel through supporting hundreds of Israeli human rights and civil society organisations. We are a partnership of Israelis and Diaspora Jews dedicated to a vision of Israel as both the Jewish homeland, and a shared society at peace with itself and its neighbours. What's On Mon 24 The Nation State Law and Diaspora Jewry’s relationship with Israel Dec The passage of the Nation State Law this year saw a rare rebuke to Israel from the Board of Deputies and concern throughout the Diaspora. We’ll look at why 14:40- the Law was controversial, consider how its values compare to those enshrined in Israel’s Declaration of Independence, and discuss the implications for 15:40 Diaspora Jewry’s relationship with Israel. The issue of antisemitism in the Labour Party has been incredibly difficult for the Jewish community and for Jewish students in particular, who have faced antisemitism on campus. 2. The Labour Party’s new leadership have made promising steps in dealing with the problem of antisemitism in Labour but there is still a long way to go. 3. The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) played a key role in the fight against antisemitism, having referred the Labour Party to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) – which found it guilty of committing three unlawful acts. 4. UJS has worked with JLM in the past to provide antisemitism awareness training on campus. How do you want it to happen? 1. UJS should continue to work alongside the Jewish Labour Movement in co-hosting events to share the experiences of Jewish students. 2. If antisemitism awareness training in University Labour Clubs resumes, UJS should facilitate training with JLM. UJS should be in regular contact with JLM to coordinate efforts to fight antisemitism on campus when it arises in Labour Party spaces.     Annual Report 2018 Dear friend, key 2018 It gives me great pleasure to share with you our Annual Report, which highlights just some of our achievements in 2018, and also to introduce myself to you as the new chair of the Yachad Board of Trustees. I am a member of Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue, ACHIEVEMENTS a previous chair of the UJIA Business Division and have served on the Yachad board for the past two years. Further, it is the party that initiated every single United Kingdom race equality law. However, as with wider society, there is too much clear evidence (going back some years) of minority hateful or ignorant attitudes and behaviours festering within a sometimes bitter incivility of discourse. This has no place in a modern democratic socialist party that puts equality, inclusion and human rights at its heart. Moreover, I have heard too many Jewish voices express concern that antisemitism has not been taken seriously enough in the Labour Party and broader Left for some years. An occasionally toxic atmosphere is in danger of shutting down free speech within the Party rather than facilitating it, and is understandably utilised by its opponents. It is completely counterproductive to the Labour cause, let alone to the interests of frightened and dispossessed people, whether at home or abroad.
