Thank you to Carl Herzig and his St. Ambrose University student staff for including the following thesis poems in issues of Quercus: “Inflorescence” (Vol. 28, 2019) and “One week after the burn” (Vol. 29, 2020). viii ABSTRACT Precarious paradise: Toolesboro, Iowa tells a tale of a very small but extremely significant place on a river bluff in southeastern Iowa, site of both 2,000-year-old Native American burial mounds and an ancestral farm dating back to early white settlement in 1835. Through poems, field notes, and an historical essay, it conjures up both ancient and pioneer past, as well as the flourishing present of the prairie reestablished on what had been crop land for 175 years. In a variety of poetic forms from free verse to villanelle and sonnet, cento and prose poem, as well as in free-flowing notes recounting the author’s observations made on myriad walks around and through the prairie, this hybrid collection strives to depict seasonal life and death on the small tallgrass prairie accurately and empathetically. The place we now call Toolesboro has been and is a place of boundless beauty, but also of danger, beset by invasive species, both human and nonhuman, competing for sovereignty. Though lack of respect toward native peoples was shown in the past, the works in this thesis are dedicated to honoring their heritage as well as appreciating the legacy of the pioneers by heralding the natural beauty and bounty of the land that sustained them both. 1 CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION In the preface to his 1841 work, Sketches of Iowa, or the Emigrant’s Guide, John B. Newhall, wrote of the emerging state of Iowa in flowery terms: “Possessed of a soil unrivalled in the variety and excellence of its products, its salubrious climate, and rapidly settling by a people who are bound to their brethren from the Atlantic states by the indissoluble ties of religion and kindred, Iowa will, ere long, enjoy all the advantages that can render a country prosperous, and a people happy.” As we look back today, we recognize the tragic reality that the good fortune of the white settlers had heart-rending consequences for the Native American peoples already living in this frontier territory. Broken treaties and brutal actions gradually drove the Sac and Fox (today’s Mesquakie) from the land along the Mississippi between today’s Muscatine and Burlington, making way for settlers like those of my husband John Hayes’s ancestors to find prosperity and happiness. We were their beneficiaries, but also bear responsibility for their injustices. The little town of Black Hawk (later renamed Toolesboro) on a bluff above the Iowa River near where it flowed into the Mississippi River (the river has since changed its course) played a significant colonial role, but before that, stretching back at least 2,000 years, the place was populated, at times in the thousands, by waves of native inhabitants. The confluence of rivers providing water and facilitating travel and trade, the woods and the prairies burgeoning with animal and plant resources, and the bluffs offering lookouts and protection from enemy tribes and harsh weather all made this area a chosen land.

Mahr, Apalachicola, Florida December 2013 ii ABSTRACT The Pierce site (8Fr14), near the mouth of the Apalachicola River in Franklin County, northwest Florida, was a major prehistoric mound center during the late Early and Middle Woodland (about A.D. 200-700) and Mississippian (about A.D. 1000-1500) periods. People lived there probably continuously during at least the last 2000 years (until right before the European invasion of Florida in the sixteenth century) and took advantage of the strategic location commanding the river and bay, as well as the abundant terrestrial and aquatic resources. Besides constructing several mounds for burial of the dead and probably support of important structures, native peoples left long midden (refuse) ridges of shells, animal bones, artifacts and blackened sandy soils, which built up a large and very significant archaeological site. Early Europeans and Americans who settled in the town of Apalachicola recognized the archaeological importance of Pierce and collected artifacts. But since the site and its spectacular findings were published by C.B. Moore in 1902, much information has been lost or misunderstood. Recent investigations by the University of South Florida were commissioned by the property owner to research and evaluate the significance of the site. There is evidence for an Early Woodland (Deptford) occupation and mound building, possibly as early as A.D. 200. Seven of the mounds form an oval, with the Middle Woodland burial mounds on the west side.

Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. University of Southern Mississippi August 2014 Submitted to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Jackson, Mississippi ii Abstract In the summer of 2013, archaeologists with the University of Southern Mississippi tested eight archaeological sites in the Southern Yazoo Basin as part of the Mississippi Mound Trail Project (MMT) for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) and the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT.). These sites are located in Issaquena, Sharkey, and Washington Counties, Mississippi, and include Anguilla (22SH510), Arcola (22WS516), Carter (22SH532), Cary (22SH507), Grace (22IS500), Hardee (22IS502), Mont Helena (22SH505), and Refuge (22WS508). These sites contain mounds visible from existing right-of-ways (ROWs) and are located near major highways, including Mississippi Highway 1 and US Highway 61, making them ideal candidates for destinations on the planned Mississippi Mound Trail. The goal of archaeological investigations was to produce basic site information for signage and other tourism purposes. Investigations consisted of soil coring, augering, and limited test excavation on the flanks of mounds in order to produce artifacts and charcoal samples suitable for dating.
