More than 3,000 kids and their parents joined us for learning activities, opportunities to do kind acts for others, and meet Daniel Tiger himself. I shared the stage with Daniel that morning and the sea of happy children we saw from the podium was incredible! The Vietnam War series and Outreach: The Vietnam War, which was referred to as Ken Burns’ most ambitious film, premiered in September. The sweeping 18-hour documentary was an emotional and compelling journey that received a great deal of acclaim. In addition to the broadcast, WXXI partnered with MuCCC Theater, The Central Library, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 20, and the local Vietnamese Community to host outreach events to engage our community in conversations about what happened during the Vietnam War era. Opioids and Heroin Epidemic Coverage: To shed light on what law enforcement and health care providers are calling an “epidemic,” WXXI-TV and our national healthcare series Second Opinion devoted an evening of special programming on the issue of opioids and heroin abuse in October. The night featured Overdose: Inside the Epidemic, where a local couple shared the story of their son who struggled with opioid use and addiction, and eventually died from a heroin overdose. WXXI News, including Need to Know and Connections with Evan Dawson, will continue to address the issue with ongoing coverage. These are only a few examples of the programming and services that had an impact on our community – and, as a member, I hope you share our pride in the work we have done in 2017. Norm [email protected] @normWXXI Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER For over 100 years, Fairport Baptist Homes (FBH) has been providing compassionate care to seniors and their families. FBH offers senior housing, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitative care, and in-home services, and encourages seniors to be as independent as possible. Opening in spring 2018, FBH’s new senior living community, The Woodlands at Stonebrook, will offer apartments with optional amenities, which will allow residents to choose their own service packages. WXXI connects with Tom Poelma, CEO, to learn more about FBH. Q. How does community support affect FBH? We rely heavily on community support. Our Senior Options for Independence (SOFI) program runs in partnership with the Town of Perinton. From a financial standpoint, we rely on donations to our foundation to make up the difference between what insurance covers and the actual high costs of care at FBH. Q. What are some of the greatest challenges facing families in your world? Choosing care providers and/or transitioning to a new home or level of care can be one of the EVENTS toughest and most important decisions older adults and their families make. Q. How does FBH help families overcome these challenges? Our goal is to provide the highest quality of care in all we do. Our SOFI program and our senior & housing options help independent seniors maintain their independence. We’re pioneers in bringing the household model to long-term care by being person-centered and focusing on care, community and choice. Our communities are full of life: caring, vibrant, vital. Q. What are the top three activities residents enjoy the most? Weekly harp music with Diane, playing games, including trivia, bingo, word games, and Yahtzee, and religious activities in our chapel. Q. How does FBH help preserve independence? We strive for our residents to have the most active and healthy lifestyles they can by providing every opportunity to be as independent as possible. Our staff helps residents to embrace choices, feel empowered and live a happy, healthy life. fairportbaptisthomes.org @fairportbaptisthomes Fairport Baptist Homes NEWS TOM POELMA CEO, FAIRPORT BAPTIST HOMES To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected] A YEAR-END GIFT TO WXXI IS A GIFT TO OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY! Maazel began his tenure as the Philharmonic’s new Music Director in September, and already has put his stamp of authority on the playing of the orchestra. Indeed he and the Philharmonic were rapturously received wherever they performed on a recent tour of the Far East. Celebrating the New Year with music is nothing new for Maazel: he holds the modern record for most appearances as conductor of the celebrated New Year’s Day concerts in Vienna by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. There, of course, the fare is made up mostly of music by the waltzing Johann Strauss family, father and sons. For his New Year’s Eve concert with the New York Philharmonic Maazel has chosen quintessentially American music by the composer considered by many to be America’s closest equivalent to the Strausses, George Gershwin.

  • Classical Jazz
LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER May 29, 2003, 8:00 p.m. on PBS Marsalis at the Penthouse In the summer of 1987 a "Classical Jazz" concert series was established at New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, under the inspired leadership of trumpet player, Wynton Marsalis. Seven years later this indispensable activity was redefined and became the autonomous jazz division at Lincoln Center--Jazz at Lincoln Center. Thus this essential American musical form took its place at Lincoln Center alongside such other constituents as the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, with Marsalis continuing as the driving force behind it. We have been privileged over the years on Live From Lincoln Center to be able to bring you several performances by this outstanding ensemble, most recently in concert with Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic. (Interestingly, during the years of the Masur family's residence in New York, the Maestro's son-- himself an aspiring conductor--became a great jazz enthusiast.) Our next Live From Lincoln Center telecast, on Thursday evening, May 29, will be devoted to yet another live performance by Jazz at Lincoln Center. But with a difference! Our previous sessions with Jazz at Lincoln Center have originated in one of the several concert halls in the Lincoln Center complex and have featured the artistry of the large ensemble. On May 29 the 90-minute performance will take place in the intimate confines of the Kaplan Penthouse high atop the building that houses Lincoln Center's administration offices. The Kaplan Penthouse has served as the locale for three previous Live From Lincoln Center telecasts: two featuring Itzhak Perlman, the other spotlighting Renée Fleming.

  • THE FIRST FORTY YEARS INTRODUCTION by Susan Stamberg
THE FIRST FORTY YEARS INTRODUCTION by Susan Stamberg Shiny little platters. Not even five inches across. How could they possibly contain the soundtrack of four decades? How could the phone calls, the encounters, the danger, the desperation, the exhilaration and big, big laughs from two score years be compressed onto a handful of CDs? If you’ve lived with NPR, as so many of us have for so many years, you’ll be astonished at how many of these reports and conversations and reveries you remember—or how many come back to you (like familiar songs) after hearing just a few seconds of sound. And you’ll be amazed by how much you’ve missed—loyal as you are, you were too busy that day, or too distracted, or out of town, or giving birth (guess that falls under the “too distracted” category). Many of you have integrated NPR into your daily lives; you feel personally connected with it. NPR has gotten you through some fairly dramatic moments. Not just important historical events, but personal moments as well. I’ve been told that a woman’s terror during a CAT scan was tamed by the voice of Ira Flatow on Science Friday being piped into the dreaded scanner tube. So much of life is here. War, from the horrors of Vietnam to the brutalities that evanescent medium—they came to life, then disappeared. Now, of Iraq. Politics, from the intrigue of Watergate to the drama of the Anita on these CDs, all the extraordinary people and places and sounds Hill-Clarence Thomas controversy.
