The explosions can become even larger when seawater enters the magma chamber through cracks and flashes into steam. The latter happened with the largest of the 1883 Krakatoan explosions – one that almost completely obliterated the island. (NG??, ItO) 27 August 2008 mar110_L11_Mega-Volcanoes_Krakatoa_27aug08.doc 4 Figure 11.6 Regional Geography and Plate Tectonics Indonesia is dominated by volcanic island arcs that are formed by the subduction of the Philippine and Indian-Australian plates under the Eurasian plate. These collisions and those associated with a number of other smaller plates make this a very seismically active region. In 1883, the island of Krakatoa was situated in the Sunda Strait - almost at the intersection of two significant faults. A Dutch volcanologist, who was standing on a nearby mountain, reported seeing the ocean split open far enough for him to see the glowing magma underneath - just prior to the massive explosion of Krakatoa. The 1883 explosion was the culmination of a long history of Krakatoan volcanism. (SW) Figure 11.7 Krakatoa: 1680 An etching of eruptions of Krakatoa around 1680. Verlaten and Lang islands are thought by some geologists to have been the remains of a giant caldera left over from an earlier and much larger eruption-possibly the suspected 535 A.D. eruption. (??) Figure 11.9 Krakatoa Explodes - 1883 In the 1883 explosion of Krakatoa much of the original island (top) was destroyed. The only remaining portion of the original island was a section of the Rakata cone (bottom). Several smaller islands were created from the debris while Verlaten Island was significantly enlarged and Lang island lost some land around its perimeter. (ItO) 27 August 2008 mar110_L11_Mega-Volcanoes_Krakatoa_27aug08.doc 6 Figure 11.10 Krakatoa Explosion “The Sound Heard ‘Round the World” The sound of the largest explosion was heard all around the Indian Ocean and in other parts of the world including Cuba. The sound was described as ships firing their guns. Even where nothing was heard, barometers recorded air pressure changes; which traveled around the world seven times and “echoed” for fifteen days. (SW?) Figure 11.11 Krakatoa Explosion - Followed by Tsunami ! The series of 1883 Krakatoa explosions triggered a series of tsunami. The first few were minor (couple of feet), but the final one was so powerful that it carried an iron ship two miles inland. The tsunami triggered by the final explosion was unusual in that it “skipped” over islands and other landmasses to hit the coast on the opposite side of the landmass before the wave had a chance to refract/reflect around the island/landmass. There were reports of the wave, which traveled around the world, reaching England. (NH) 27 August 2008 mar110_L11_Mega-Volcanoes_Krakatoa_27aug08.doc 8 Figure 11.14 Tsunami “Sleigh Ride” The 1886 eruption of Krakatoa triggered a series of tsunamis which were some of the largest volcanically induced tsunamis in history. The waves were so large that they carried heavy iron clad ships such as those shown-and their moorings-several miles inland. The tsunami carried several heavy iron ships a couple miles inland and deposited them in the jungle. Many other ships were carried back out and deposited on the beaches as debris or washed all the way out to sea. (SW?) The only known eruption to create tsunamis on a comparable scale was the eruption of Santorini around the year 1450BC that covered the entire island of Crete in over a meter of water and destroyed the Minoan civilization. The second most recent one to erupt was Toba 74,000 years ago in Sumatra and was thought to have triggered an ice age. The mass extinction that followed from the sudden drop in temperature as well as from the ash and other fallout could have wiped out as much as three fourths of all the life on the planet. (SA??) (NG??) Figure 11.19 The Volcanic Ash Hazard Large amounts of fine volcanic ash are ejected during an eruption can burn and/or smother life near the volcano as it settles. Farther away the fine dust can coat everything and cause roofs to collapse from the excessive weight of only a few centimeters. Even small amounts of the ash when breathed in can also damage lungs and other tissues. This reduction in the amount of sunlight reaching the earth creates a cooling effect. Krakatoa’s eruption released enough ash into the atmosphere to cause noticeable cooling (bottom). Also note Tambora in 1815, that eruption released even more ash than Krakatoa and combined with ash from the unusually high number of other volcanoes that erupted at the same year, the cooling effect was extreme compared to other events. Anak Krakatau, which is largely built on the steep NE wall of the 1883 Krakatau eruption caldera, is active on its SW side (towards the 1883 caldera), which makes the edifice quite unstable. A hypothetical 0.280 km3 flank collapse directed southwestwards would trigger an initial wave 43 m in height that would reach the islands of Sertung, Panjang and Rakata in less than 1 min, with amplitudes from 15 to 30 m. These waves would be potentially dangerous for the many small tourist boats circulating in, and around, the Krakatau Archipelago. The waves would then propagate in a radial manner from the impact region and across the Sunda Strait, at an average speed of 80–110 km h21.

    KATA PENGANTAR Kegiatan ini merupakan program dari Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah Kabupaten Wonosobo, dengan mengambil tema sebagai pembuatan jalur evakuasi bencana erupsi Gunungapi Sindoro di Kecamatan Kejajar. Laporan ini merupakan laporan akhir yang berisi materi mengenai latar belakang, maksud dan tujuan, sasasaran, keluaran, tinjauan pustaka serta metode penelitian, serta kajian analisis jalur evakuasi bencana Gunungapi Sindoro. Pada kegiatan ini selain survey dalam penentuan jalur evakuasi pada pemukiman di desa-desa di lereng Gunungapi Sindoro, juga digunakan teknik wawancara. Metode wawancara ini dipergunakan untuk mengetahui kesiapsiagaan masyarakat, selain itu masyarakat memberikan peran aktif dalam rangka mitigasi bencana khususnya bencana erupsi Gunungapi Sindoro. Hasil yang diperoleh bahwa, Desa Buntu, Desa Sigedang, Desa Kreo, serta Desa Kejajar merupakan daerah-derah di lereng gunungapi Sindoro yang memiliki potensi ancaman tinggi hingga sedang. Penentuan titik kumpul beradarkan aksesibilitas, tersedianya fasilitas serta daya tampung yang relatif masal.     Report on the AIIA Vic Study Tour to Indonesia June 2019 Networking Reception in Yogyakarta Report - AIIA Study Tour to Indonesia June 2019 Dear Reader, We arrived in Indonesia with open minds. We came from all States in Australia, except South Australia. We were a very eclectic group of Australians with many different backgrounds, ages and interests. This meant that we saw the same things and heard the same things but through different lenses. This deepened our understanding of Indonesia. The list of all Delegates are appended to this report. We were very well received wherever we went. Our Australian Missions in Indonesia were most helpful. We met with numerous peoples and organisations. These too are listed in this report. Despite taking six internal flights, we saw very little of this very large and diverse country; seeing only Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Makassar and Toraja. And yet, from those visits, we gleaned so much about this most wonderful country. We were fortunate in having briefing materials prior to our departure. The headings of these are appended to this report. We came away from Indonesia optimistic about its future; marvelling at the opportunities it has and the challenges it faces. We nevertheless carry a disappointment in that Australians have a pitiful knowledge about Indonesia. We came away with the understanding that Australians must implement changes to ensure that Indonesia and Australia can only go into the future, hand in hand, if we, in Australia, are determined to inform ourselves better, much better, about our most important neighbour. I hope that this report does something towards achieving that.

Beyond the purely physical horrors of an event that has only very recently been properly understood, the eruption changed the world in more ways than could possibly be imagined. The Government steamer Berouw, which lay anchored near the pier-head, hailed the mate as he was returning on board, and the people on board her then stated to him that it was impossible to land anywhere, and that a boat which had put off from the shore had already been wrecked.
