A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE The 2019 North Georgia Annual Conference has come to a close. Among the business of the Annual Conference is the “fixing” of the appointments, where pastors are officially assigned their places of ministry for the new conference year (July 1-June 30), whether it be as pastor of a church or to a specialized ministry. I am happy that Bishop Sue Haupert- Johnson has appointed me to return to Winder First for another year. I am looking forward to spending yet another year with you! I would like to share with you a poem written by Grace Noel Crowell, titled “A Pastor to His People”. Marion Sherrill shared this with those of you who were in the 1980’s when he was pastor here at Winder First UMC. So here it is again to refresh your memory and for those who have not seen Calvin’s it.

A Pastor to His People Comments You are my people, given me to love, To serve, to shepherd through the days ahead; I pray God that I may be worthy of This honor; I am glad that I was led To come to you, that through God’s gentle grace My lines have fallen in this pleasant place.

I would be strong to work where there is need; I would be true to serve you as I should; And I would give the Bread of Life to feed Each Hungry soul who comes to me for food; And I would honor with my every word The blessed Savior…Jesus Christ my Lord.

I plead with you for patience. Page 2 Around Our Church The Good News Around Our Church Page 3 TRAVEL TO THE HOLY LAND WITH YOUR PASTOR AND HIS BROTHER Have you ever wanted to travel to the Holy Land? Have you ever wanted to walk where Jesus walked? Have you ever wanted to see the places we read about in the Bible like Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jerusalem, Galilee, Capernaum, Caesarea Phillipi, the Dead Sea and other places? HERE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY! If you have been before, perhaps you would like to take the tour again…so much to take-in in just one trip! Come tour the Holy Land with Pastor Calvin! If you would like, you can add a four day extension into Egypt and visit Mt. Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments, then on to Cairo. With this extension, you’ll also see the Great Pyramids, Sphinx, Giza Plateau and Egyptian Museum, with Egyptian treasures including that of King Tut Ankh Amun. th When: March 23-April 3, 2020 (or April 7 , if you take the Egypt extension). There will be an informational meeting, probably in October...so, mark your calendars NOW! See Pastor Calvin for brochures and applications or questions you may have (however, most questions will be answered at the informational meeting). NOTE: Several have already picked up applications. Please let Pastor Calvin know when you have made your application and paid your deposit, so he’ll know who will be traveling with him.

PROTECTION FOR THE STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS The Trustees are in the process of providing protective covering for the stained- glass windows and they NEED YOUR HELP! These new coverings are not too yellow, as have the coverings that were placed over the stained-glass windows at the time of installation. Not only will the new covering enhance the beauty of the stained-glass, but they will protect the whole window. The fifty-five year old wood is beginning to rot and is need of painting and repair. The windows most in need of repair will repaired first. The new coverings will go brick-to-brick, encasing the entire window. This will protect NOT ONLY the stained-glass, but the wood mold around the windows, thus eliminating the COST of painting and repairing the windows every five to six years. Each time this is done, it is more costly than the previous time. Let’s help the thermostats go up that you see around the church to meet this goal. If you would like to help, please mark your check “windows”!

54 & More Luncheon and Program Winder 1st’s 54 And More July meeting will be on Tuesday, July 2nd at 12:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Our program will have some special twists. First, we are privileged to have our “Third Annual Calvin Haney BBQ”. Calvin's most generous gift of his famous homemade Barbecue and Brunswick Stew will highlight our luncheon. Secondly, we will have a program presented by Carter J. Wood about our American flag. Please bring your favorite picnic side dish or dessert and come to have a great meal, fun, and fellowship. Again this year, in the two Traditional Services, we will expand the blessing of the backpacks into a “Service of Blessing of The Backpacks and Appreciation and Prayers for Teachers and Others Who Are a Part of The Education Process”. JULY COMMUNION OFFERING MURPHY HARPST HOME Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center, Inc., located in Cedartown, Georgia, is a non- profit organization providing highly specialized residential treatment for children and youth (ages 7-17) from the state of Georgia. Murphy-Harpst is a nationally accredited and state licensed agency and holds a 501c(3) status. Each resident of MHCC arrives with his or her own tragic story. Most have been abused, neglected or traumatized in some way. From such backgrounds, these children have developed severe mental and behavioral problems. Many are plagued by fear and anxiety disorders. Most have never had a stable place to live with consistent care and regular meals. Many will arrive at MHCC with all of their worldly possessions in a single bag. How tragic to be a child and feel that no one loves or cares for you! Through intensive mental and behavioral counseling, as well as the love and care provided by MHCC, approximately 82 percent of these young people are able to grow up to hold jobs, maintain relationships and live within the community, thus becoming productive members of society. Perhaps that does not sound like a successful percentage, but with the ever-growing and more severe problems faced by these children, it is a great percentage! Please prayerfully consider leaving a gift for Murphy-Harpst on the altar rail as you come up for Communion on Sunday, July 7th.

CHURCH OF THE MONTH IN JULY

After many years of serving as Church of the Month every August , we have changed to the month of July !

Throughout the month, people in our community may come to us for assistance with utility bills, food and clothing needs.

This year-round program is primarily funded through the Barrow County Cooperative Benevolence Ministry as well as our own Community Relief Fund. Volunteers are needed to help with interviews and other tasks on Monday,

Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9 AM - 12 PM. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Amanda Hill (770-356-0626).

In addition, our church is responsible for staffing the Community Food Pantry during July (NOT August)! A sign-up sheet is available in the church office lobby. There are still A LOT of spots left!!! Please prayerfully consider volunteering to help!

MISSION FOCUS FOR JULY — SCHOOL SUPPLIES Throughout the month of July, we will be collecting school supplies to be distributed to schools throughout Barrow County. Many families who are struggling financially have difficulty providing all the supplies necessary for their children. It's important for EVERY student to feel prepared ... and it feels good to know you helped a child succeed at school! Please place your donations in the mission bins in the hallway closest to the nursery or in the mission bins in the Fellowship Hall. The items needed are listed below:

crayons washable markers pencils pens folders w/pockets spiral notebooks notebook paper white glue glue sticks rulers scissors pocket dictionary highlighters pink eraser

Operation Christmas Child Processing Center Volunteers Needed We are trying to get a group of volunteers from our church to serve at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center checking and sorting boxes to get them ready to ship out to children all over the world. Please contact Amanda Hill at 770-356-0626 if you are interested in helping with this ministry.

Winder Health Care is in need of large and XL men’s clothing. Please see Dwight for more info or drop off items in his office. The Good News SCHEDULE Page 6 OF SERVICES AND EVENTS
