  • (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals?
    Accepted manuscript version of: Schwanebeck, Wieland. “Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena.” Contemporary Masculinities in the UK and the US: Between Bodies and Systems, edited by Stefan Horlacher and Kevin Floyd, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, pp. 75–98, doi:10.1007/978-3-319-50820-7. Wieland Schwanebeck (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena Though it may not have required drastic proof, recent news from the political arena suggests that certain distinguished statesmen tend to rely on a candid exhibition of genitals in order to draw attention to their virility and, by implication, to their political power. Silvio Berlusconi made the headlines in 2010, when he insisted that the missing penis of a Mars statue be restored before the sculpture was deemed suitable to adorn his office as Italian Prime Minister, horrified reactions amongst art historians notwithstanding (cf. Williams). This anecdote sits comfortably amongst other tales from the bunga bunga crypt, yet one may as well wonder whether Berlusconi is not just a tad less inhibited than some of his colleagues when it comes to acknowledging that the body politic requires visible proofs of manhood. Slavoj Žižek has characterized the contemporary media environment as one in which it would not appear out of the question for a politician to “allow a hard-core video of his or her sexual shenanigans to circulate in public, to convince the voters of his or her force of attraction or potency” (208).

  • NVS 12-1-13-Announcements-Page;
    Announcements: CFPs, conference notices, & current & forthcoming projects and publications of interest to neo-Victorian scholars (compiled by the NVS Assistant Editors) ***** CFPs: Journals, Special Issues & Collections (Entries that are only listed, without full details, were highlighted in a previous issue of NVS. Entries are listed in order of abstract/submission deadlines.) Penny Dreadfuls and the Gothic Edited Collection Abstracts due: 18 December 2020 Articles due: 30 April 2021 Famed for their scandalous content and supposed pernicious influence on a young readership, it is little wonder why the Victorian penny dreadful was derided by critics and, in many cases, censored or banned. These serialised texts, published between the 1830s until their eventual decline in the 1860s, were enormously popular, particularly with working-class readers. Neglecting these texts from Gothic literary criticism creates a vacuum of working-class Gothic texts which have, in many cases, cultural, literary and socio-political significance. This collection aims to redress this imbalance and critically assess these crucial works of literature. While some of these penny texts (i.e. String of Pearls, Mysteries of London, and Varney the Vampyre to name a few) are popularised and affiliated with the Gothic genre, many penny bloods and dreadfuls are obscured by these more notable texts. As well as these traditional pennys produced by such prolific authors as James Malcolm Rymer, Thomas Peckett Press, and George William MacArthur Reynolds, the objective of this collection is to bring the lesser-researched, and forgotten, texts from neglected authors into scholarly conversation with the Gothic tradition and their mainstream relations. This call for papers requests essays that explore these ephemeral and obscure texts in relevance to the Gothic mode and genre.

I am grateful to the NHS for still being on this planet, long may its existence also continue. Much thought and thanks must also go to my late, great Mother, who in the early stages of my life pushed me onwards, initially arguing with the education department of Birmingham City Council when they said that I was not promising enough to do ‘O’ levels. Tim Moore, stepson and good friend must also be thanked for his digital wizardry. Finally, I am immensely grateful to my wife Joyce for her valued help in checking all my final drafts and the manner in which she has encouraged me along the years of my research; standing right beside me as she has always done when I have faced other challenging issues.

  • December 2018 When Cold Feet Isn’T Just Nerves
    CALL US TODAY – 407-339-7759 • 352-589-9550 (LAKE CO.) News and Updates December 2018 When Cold Feet Isn’t Just Nerves People often talk about cold feet in terms of walking down the aisle or engaging in a stressful event, but what’s going on when your feet just feel cold for seemingly no reason? Many causes of cold feet are nothing to worry about, but others can be sign of an underlying problem. It pays to talk with a podiatrist about your condition if it keeps returning or causes you concerns for other reasons. Among the most common causes of cold feet is poor circulation. The feet, being far from your heart, already have a bigger challenge receiving warm blood fl ow. If a condition is causing your general circulation to be slower, your feet will be among the fi rst to feel it. A potential cause of interrupted circulation is Raynaud’s phenomenon which causes blood vessels in the hands and/or feet to suddenly constrict and spasm, reducing blood fl ow. While sometimes associated with another condition, Raynaud’s phenomenon can also happen entirely on its own to an otherwise healthy person. Also, in some cases, certain medications can mimic this effect. If you are sensing cold, but your feet don’t actually feel cold to the touch, that may be the sign that something is amiss neurologically. The nerves that sense temperature may not be operating as they should and damaged in some way (neuropathy). If that cold feeling also comes with tingling or numbness, the odds of a nerve problem become even more likely.

  • Trends in Political Television Fiction in the UK: Themes, Characters and Narratives, 1965-2009
    This item was submitted to Loughborough’s Institutional Repository (https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/) by the author and is made available under the following Creative Commons Licence conditions. For the full text of this licence, please go to: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ Trends in political television fiction in the UK: Themes, characters and narratives, 1965-2009. 1 Introduction British television has a long tradition of broadcasting ‘political fiction’ if this is understood as telling stories about politicians in the form of drama, thrillers and comedies. Vote, Vote for Nigel Barton (1965) is generally considered the first of these productions for a mass audience presented in the then usual format of the single television play. Ever since there has been a regular stream of such TV series and TV-movies, varying in success and audience appeal, including massive hits and considerable failures. Television fiction has thus become one of the arenas of political imagination, together with literature, art and - to a lesser extent -music. Yet, while literature and the arts have regularly been discussed and analyzed as relevant to politics (e.g. Harvie, 1991; Horton and Baumeister, 1996), political television fiction in the UK has only recently become subject to academic scrutiny, leaving many questions as to its meanings and relevance still to be systematically addressed. In this article we present an historical and generic analysis in order to produce a benchmark for this emerging field, and for comparison with other national traditions in political TV-fiction. We first elaborate the question why the study of the subject is important, what is already known about its themes, characters and narratives, and its capacity to evoke particular kinds of political engagement or disengagement.

    Congratulations and Best Wishes SMITHS BLUFF REFINERY 40th Anniversary Year I Foreword Dear Students, The old glass dome lamp was a famil iar sight at the time that the first PILOT was published. Many couples often strolled in a park and hesitated underneath the comfort of its glow. Just as the lamp sym bolizes a bygone era, the staff and I have labored to produce a yearbook which re flects the unprecedented events of the 1963- 1964 school year. Through the tragic and exhilarating, you, the students of Nederland High School, have alternately been saddened and thrilled. For many of you eniors, this is the culmination of your formal education; may your school years serve you well in your chosen career. For those who continue into college, you have a strong foundation upon which to base your future. To the under classmen, a word from one who has already passed this way: Do not allow yourself to become entangled by the petty, for these are surely the most productive and valuable years of your lives. In closing, we challenge each of you to excel through vision, enlightenment, and understanding. As you reminisce through the pages of this 30th Anniversary Issue of the PILOT, may you recognize the signifi cance of a most wonderful year. If you stu dents are pleased by this record of your achievements and disappointments, then our endeavors shall be rewarded. With best hopes for each of you, R. L.
