  • “My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (Guest Post)*
“My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

[Verse 2] [Chorus] I've got so much honey, the bees My girl, my girl, my girl envy me Talkin' 'bout my girl, my girl I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees [Outro] Well, I guess you'd say I've got sunshine on a cloudy day What can make me feel this way? With my girl I've even got the month of May [Chorus] With my girl My girl, my girl, my girl Talkin' 'bout, talkin' 'bout, talkin' Talkin' 'bout my girl, my girl 'bout my girl 155 "My Girl" is a soul music song recorded by the Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) record label. Written and produced by the Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, the song became the Temptations' first U.S. number-one single, and is today their signature song. Robinson's inspiration for writing this song was his wife, Miracles member Claudette Rogers Robinson. The song was included on the Temptations 1965 album The Temptations Sing Smokey.

RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY NEW BRUNSWICK AN INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT REDFIELD FOR THE RUTGERS ORAL HISTORY ARCHIVES INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY MOLLY GRAHAM EAST BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY FEBRUARY 19, 2015 TRANSCRIPT BY JESSE BRADDELL Molly Graham: This is an interview with Robert Redfield, our second session. The interview is taking place on 102 Ryder’s Lane in East Brunswick. The date is February 19, 2015 and the interviewer is Molly Graham. If you could talk me about the years between finishing at NYU and forming the Redfield Agency. Robert Redfield: Even before that, I was so involved with some of the clubs, doing a lot of lounge work. MG: How did you start working in these lounges? How would you make the connections? RR: This was even before the Stone Pony opened in Asbury Park. I was pretty well connected because I had always been connected in the entertainment business. A lot of musicians, they got to know me and they’d come to me because I knew all the clubs. I got to know the club owners as well. Every week, The Newark Star Ledger would have two full pages advertising all the lounges, clubs and entertainment. I didn’t trust anybody else to do what I would do. I was more or less confined to the clubs, the lounges, the local groups because it consumed most of my time. But the groups I worked with would go all over--Las Vegas, Canada, and all over the country. But when the drinking and driving laws became more strict, this business seemed to stop overnight.

Congratulations and Best Wishes SMITHS BLUFF REFINERY 40th Anniversary Year I Foreword Dear Students, The old glass dome lamp was a famil iar sight at the time that the first PILOT was published. Many couples often strolled in a park and hesitated underneath the comfort of its glow. Just as the lamp sym bolizes a bygone era, the staff and I have labored to produce a yearbook which re flects the unprecedented events of the 1963- 1964 school year. Through the tragic and exhilarating, you, the students of Nederland High School, have alternately been saddened and thrilled. For many of you eniors, this is the culmination of your formal education; may your school years serve you well in your chosen career. For those who continue into college, you have a strong foundation upon which to base your future. To the under classmen, a word from one who has already passed this way: Do not allow yourself to become entangled by the petty, for these are surely the most productive and valuable years of your lives. In closing, we challenge each of you to excel through vision, enlightenment, and understanding. As you reminisce through the pages of this 30th Anniversary Issue of the PILOT, may you recognize the signifi cance of a most wonderful year. If you stu dents are pleased by this record of your achievements and disappointments, then our endeavors shall be rewarded. With best hopes for each of you, R. L. • The Temptations Live at the Red Robinson Show Theatre
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 20, 2010 BOULEVARD CASINO PRESENTS THE TEMPTATIONS LIVE AT THE RED ROBINSON SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, MAY 13 Coquitlam, BC – For more than forty years, the Temptations have prospered propelling popular music with a series of smash hits and sold out performances throughout the world. The history of the Temptations is the history of contemporary pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine – that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy – the Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early 60’s. The original line-up was Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. It wasn’t until 1964 that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the group into stars. An avalanche of hits followed including “My Girl”, “Get Ready”, “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep”, “I Wish It Would Rain”, “Cloud Nine” and “I Can’t Get Next to You”. Their hits continued throughout the 70’s – many featuring Dennis Edwards who had replaced Ruffin – and included “Psychedelic Shack”, “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”. Other stellar singers, Richard Street and Ali Ollie-Woodson joined adding their luster to the group’s fame. No matter the change in personnel, the Grammy Award-winning group always remained true to the Temptations tradition. During the 80’s, they prevailed with smashes such as “Treat Her Like a Lady”. Then in the 90’s, there was yet another Temptations explosion with several acclaimed albums and a two-part miniseries which aired on NBC in 1998 that chronicled the group’s history.
