Reading in the Dark: Whiteness and Racial Representation in Caldecott Books Inclusion Terry Husband Illinois State University Alice Lee Illinois State University Abstract Teachers often choose books for their classroom libraries on the basis of an award or special recognition a particular book has received. In this vein, the Caldecott Medal is one of the most highly esteemed recognitions bestowed on children's picture books each year in the United States. Relatively few studies have examined how race is represented among main characters in Caldecott books. Using a Critical Content Analysis (CCA), we examine how race is represented among atrix Center of the and Social Equity Advancement for atrix Center main characters in 80 Caldecott books from 1938 to 2017. Findings indicate that an overwhelmingly disproportionate percentage of the he M he characters are White. In addition, the non-White main characters are portrayed in very narrow roles. The Caldecott Medal 2021
Caldecott Medal Books oppl.org/kids-lists The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children. It is given to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book published the preceding year. The name of Randolph Caldecott, an English illustrator of books for children, was chosen for the medal because his work best represented the “joyousness of picture books as well as their beauty.” The horseman on the medal is taken from one of Caldecott’s illustrations for “The Diverting History of John Gilpin” (1878). The medal was originally donated by publisher Frederic G. Letter Carriers’ Uniform: Hats, Introduction In 1868 the Postmaster General listed a cap as the letter carrier’s uniform headgear. It was to be made of the same material as the coat, bound round with a black cloth band 1 1/2 inches wide, and have small buttons at the sides. In 1873, panama hats were authorized for summer. In 1887, numbered badges were added to the carriers' headwear, and helmets were approved for use. Helmets were short-brimmed with a tall crown, similar to British bobby helmets. In 1893, the more general straw hat replaced the panama hat as allowable summer headgear. By 1901, a western-style hat appeared, with a stiff crown and wide brim. Though never described in the Postal Laws and Regulations, photographs indicate this cowboy-style hat was standard wear at some Post Offices. From 1902 through 1948, postal regulations listed the hat, cap or helmet as acceptable carrier headwear. Uniform manufacturers advertised many variations in headgear style. The bobby-style helmet was last advertised in The Postal Record in 1907; in 1949, the safari-style helmet ws first pictured. Although carriers at each Post Office were to dress uniformly, photographs indicate that this was not always enforced. In 1955, only the helmet and cap were listed as acceptable headgear. The helmet was specified for summer; it was made of molded fiber in a blue-gray cadet shade and had a maroon chinstrap. The cap was a blue-gray eight-point style cap with braid the same color as the cap and a maroon chin strap. -

Literature and Literacy Roselmina Indrisano Boston University School of Education © 2008 Roselmina Indrisano 2 Introduction This annotated bibliography includes fifty books in the narrative genre that were selected for young readers. Each book or author is the recipient of one or more of the following awards: Caldecott and Newbery Awards, the American Library Association Notable Book Award, and the Coretta Scott King Award. The books are appropriate for readers in the first through sixth grades, with an approximately even distribution among the levels. Each entry in the bibliography includes: the complete reference; the level, as determined by The Fountas-Pinnell Leveled Book List K-8 (Heinneman, 2006) or the Fry Readability Formula (Fry, 1977); the awards; and three teaching ideas that are coded to selected standards in the Massachusetts English Language Arts Frameworks . A list of these standards is provided on page 52. In the few instances where the language and the structure of the text are more complex than the concepts, there is a note in the annotation to suggest that the book is suitable for reading aloud to younger learners. One of the teaching ideas for each book focuses on poetry. The number in parentheses that follows refers to the poetry anthology where the poem is published. The list of poetry anthologies is on pages 53-54. The author acknowledges, with gratitude, the assistance of Irene Papadopoulos Duros and Christine Leighton. Ms. Papadopoulos Duros reviewed the manuscript and computed the Fry readability formula for books that were not entered on the Fountas-Pinnell list. Ms. Leighton reviewed and summarized the literature on children’s reading interests that informed the selection of the books. -

These stories are passed on from one generation to the next and at some point become more than stories; they become tradition, culture, and history. Long after the original writers or creators of the stories are dead and all but forgotten, the stories remain and become a legacy. With each year that passes by the stories grow, they are modified or retold a different way, and as they grow those stories become more rooted in the cultures of those who share them. Fairytales are some of the most widespread and evident stories in cultures; they manage to catch the interest of almost all readers, and have grown far more than the average story. One such beloved fairytale is “Little Red Riding Hood,” which has seen many different authors and titles throughout its existence. The story of Little Red Riding Hood began as tales told to children, passed on through word of mouth alone. The first written version, which has come to represent the oldest and original story, was “Little Red Riding Hood” by Charles Perrault. The tale followed the characteristics of all fairytales; a handful of characters, a simple and short storyline, and a lesson to be learned. The characters were: a young and pretty girl known only as Little Red Riding Hood, a wolf that had the ability to speak, and an old and sickly grandmother of Red. The tale mentioned Red’s mother and woodsmen briefly, but their only purpose was to guide the story, they did not significantly interact within the story. -
