Biblical Archaeology Ostraca The most numerous items found by archaeologists during excavations of ancient sites are potsherds, or broken pieces of pottery. These fragments of earthenware are also referred to as ostraca (ostracon singular), from the Greek word for “shell, sherd.” Pottery fragments served as inexpensive writing materials in many places in the ancient Middle East, including Egypt and Mesopotamia. Ostraca were used for recording contracts, accounts, sales, and so forth, just as memo pads and sheets of paper are used today. Generally written with ink, the texts on ostraca varied from just one word to several dozen lines or columns. The names of Manasseh's (Joseph’s son) sons When the Israelites conquered the Promised Land and divided it among the tribes, the site of Samaria was located in the tribal territory of Manasseh. According to Joshua 17:1-6, ten clans of Manasseh, through his grandson Gilead, were allotted tracts of land in this area. They were Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, and Shemida. The sixth male, Hepher, had no grandsons but had five granddaughters—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah—and each of them received a tract of land.—Numbers 27:1-7. In 1910, George A Reisner and others of the Harvard Semitic Museum discovered 63 potsherds containing inscriptions written in ink. The potsherds were found in the remains of the treasury of the palace of Ahab in ancient Samaria. Ahab was king of Israel (Northern Kingdom). Thirty of them identify the clan/district name of 7 of the 10 offspring of Manasseh recorded in Joshua 17:2-3 and Numbers 26:28-33. -

A LIGHT TO THE GENTILES Study #2 – “The Rechabites and their Pioneers' Steadfastness to the End of the Age” Reading: Jeremiah 35 Speaker: Bro. Jim Cowie Bro. chairman and my dear brethren and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ. We began this afternoon, by making reference to Isaiah 49 and verse 6, but that passage isn't the only place where the phrase, 'A light to the Gentiles' is to be found in the servant prophecies of Isaiah. There is another, and most of you are aware that it is to be found in the 42nd chapter of Isaiah, were we shall begin this evening, to consider the question of the Rechabites. Now you might say to me, what relationship is there between Isaiah 42 and the Rechabites of Jeremiah 35? Well, that's the purpose of the next 5 or 10 minutes. I want to establish in your minds that there is a very definite connection. You see, this passage Isaiah 42 and verse 6, yea, 1 to 6 is quoted by the Lord Jesus Christ in the 12th chapter of Matthew, forms the basis of a principle that He established in His dealings with the peoples of His own times, who had rejected Him as Yahweh's servant. And we're going to see how that relates to the Rechabites and their family a little later on. In Isaiah 42 and verse 1, that Yahweh calls upon us to behold His servant, 'whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him'. -

Athaliah and the Theopolitics of Royal Assassination Cat Quine University of Nottingham Abstract. While the kingdom of Israel experienced eight military coups in its shorter his- tory, the kingdom of Judah saw only four assassinations of its monarchs, three of which were Athaliah, her usurper, and his successor.1 This sequence of untimely royal deaths in Judah stands in contrast to the stability of Israel’s royal line under the Jehuite dynasty, whose kings are said to have entreated Yahweh, sought advice from prophets, and defeated Judah at Beth-Shemesh. From a later perspective it seems that whereas Yahweh previously protected the Judahite kings, in the ninth-eighth centuries BCE the Jehuite kings enjoyed Yahweh’s favour more than the Davidides. This paper thus considers the theopolitical im- pact of untimely royal deaths in ninth-eighth century Judah and argues that the instability of the Judahite royal line after her marriage contributed to the negative biblical portrayal of Athaliah and the Omride-Judahite alliance. Lesson 12 - 2nd Kings 9 2nd KINGS Week 12, chapter 9 As a boulder gathers speed as it rolls down a steep hillside, so we see Israel and Judah tumbling out of control down their own slippery slope towards God’s wrath by means of their idolatry and apostasy. And just as the physics of inertia dictate that momentum is gained as an object speeds ahead unimpeded, so it was that the northern and southern kingdoms had gained so much momentum that they were now headed towards an unstoppable collision with destruction and exile. The Book of 2nd Kings has been charting Israel and Judah’s self-inflicted apostasy and how it happened. And how it happened was essentially because of bad leadership. It’s not that a faithful people somehow were taken over by unfaithful kings; rather it was a symbiotic relationship. As the people displayed less and less obedience to their Heavenly King, and to His Ideal Word, the Torah, God gave to them the kind of leaders that their confused minds wanted and their hardened hearts deserved. Then these leaders added more evil energy to Israel and Judah’s fall away from Yehoveh, and most of the Hebrew citizens merely followed along like blind sheep. Thus even more momentum was added to the Israelites’ determination to define for themselves truth, justice, morality and just how much of following God was even needed. So YHWH intervened as the only force large enough to redirect this speeding boulder of apostasy; and as He always does, He used a few good men to bring His Word of Truth to His people for those who would have the ears to listen. -

Ancestry of Jehu Cox Knox County, Kentucky, was chosen by providence for the advent of Jehu Cox. Destiny ruled that he would be a great empire builder, a champion of Mormonism, and the ancestor of a great family of truth seekers. Kentucky, his "Old Kentucky Home" takes the name from an Indian name, meaning, "Land of Tomorrow," was first discovered by Marquette and Joliet in 1673. The Iroquoians whom Marquette found in the region described their country as a meadow land--a truly accurate description. The area was an ideal hunting ground for the Indians. Before the coming of the white man the Indian tribes prized the area so highly that a life and death struggle ensued for its possession. It was truly a "Dark and Bloody Ground" when Daniel Boone first explored it in 1767. Eight years later (1775) Daniel built the wilderness Road from Virginia into Kentucky. This famous road (later used by the Cox family) followed an Indian trail to the top of the Appalachian Mountains--better known as Cumberland Gap--then down the Cumberland River into Kentucky and Tennessee. For a century after 1775 a stream of settlers followed that road to find new homes in the west. Kentucky was given statehood June 1, 1792, eleven years before the advent of Jehu. The time chosen by providence for the advent of Jehu was September 5, 1803, simultaneously with his arrival the American people were passing through a great crisis. Tensions had been caused by the Louisiana issue. Napoleon had stolen this territory from Spain and was then offering it for sale to the United States.
