    1 Franciscan ProPer of the saints January 2 1. The rank of the celebration (solemnity, feast or memorial) is indicated for each day. If there is no indication, it is an optional memorial. 2. For each solemnity and feast a proper Mass is provided in its entirety. This is therefore used as given. 3. For memorials: a) Proper texts, given on some days, must always be used; b) When there is a reference to a particular common, the most appropriate texts should be chosen according to the principles at the beginning of the commons. The page reference in each case indicates only the beginning of the common to which reference is made. c) If the rederence is to more than one common, one or the other may be used, according to pastoral need. It is always permissible to interchange texts from several Masses within the same common. For example, if a saint is both a martyr and a bishop, either the common of martyrs or the common of pastor (bishops) may be used. d) In addition to the commons which express a special characteristic holiness (e.g., of martyrs, virgins, or pastors), the texts from the common of saints, referring to holiness in general may always be used.     Lessons from saints about the virtues of motherhood There’s nothing easy about being a mother. Maybe you’re great at discipline or work-life balance or potty training, but motherhood will test you all the same. And as mommy wars rage on every side, condemning you for how you feed or educate or correct your child, it’s hard not to feel as though you’re doing everything wrong. Mercifully, the standard set for us isn’t an Instagram account, a resume or a Mass attendance sheet. The standard set for us is the love of Christ — which is less intimidating than it sounds. “Be imitators of me,” St. Paul said (1 Cor 11:1), “as I am of Christ.” Paul knew, as we do, that the goal of the Christian life is the imitation of Christ, not the imitation of Paul. But for those with pasts like Paul’s, his example sure helps. It’s the same for moms. Jesus never struggled to breastfeed a child, so how can we imitate him in this? By looking to St. Zélie Martin, who did. Jesus never buried a child, but Venerable Cornelia Connelly buried two. Jesus wasn’t a military spouse, but St. Joaquina Vedruna de Mas was. Certainly, mothers can learn just as much from childless saints. But in the specific struggles of motherhood, it helps to know some saints who raised children and came out holier for having been mothers. Motherly saints St. Monica St. Monica has long been popular as a patroness for mothers, but she’s hardly the only saintly woman whose children are also saints.

    Volume 8, Issue 4 Newsletter January 2020 The Padre Pio Fraternity Secular Franciscan Order The Brothers and Sisters of St. Francis Region Your Council Wishes you a Holy and Humble New Year Padre Pio Fraternity Annual Retreat - Saturday, Dec 7, 2019 The retreat was held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Raleigh. The theme of the retreat was "The Humility of the Incarnation.” Jenn Fiduccia, the Retreat Director (and Director of Formation at St. Francis Church) gave an excellent presentation. Jenn ended her presentation with a story from “Tracks in the Straw: Tales Spun from the Manger” by Ted Loder (available at Amazon). It tells the donkey’s view of Mary and Joseph’s trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Lee Cunningham, OFS said “It made the story more realistic.” The participants gazed on Giotto’s Fresco of The Incarnation from the lower church of St Francis’ Basilica in Assisi. David Shick, OFS stated that this contemplation of The Incarnation inspired me to be more thoughtful about how I can better "incarnate" Christ in the world today, as a Secular Franciscan. This retreat was the perfect lead in to Christmas, a season we Franciscan's must celebrate every day! The insightful presentation on "The Humility of the Incarnation” was followed by serious and thoughtful discussions. Much was brought up about the meaning of the Incarnation and its implications for each of us. We thank Lee Cunningham, OFS, Maureen Copan, OFS and Ellen Ferrone, OFS who were responsible for the logistics so that everything ran smoothly and efficiently. The day ended with a mass in the chapel celebrated by Fr.
