    Saint Anthony Mary Claret AUTOBIOGRAPHY Edited by JOSÉ MARIA VIÑAS, CMF Director Studium Claretianum Rome Forward by ALFRED ESPOSITO, CMF Claretian Publications Chicago, 1976 FOREWORD The General Prefecture for Religious Life has for some time wanted to bring out a pocket edition of the Autobiography of St. Anthony Mary Claret to enable all Claretians to enjoy the benefit of personal contact with the most authentic source of our charism and spirit. Without discounting the value of consulting other editions, it was felt there was a real need to make this basic text fully available to all Claretians. The need seemed all the more pressing in view of the assessment of the General Chapter of 1973: "Although, on the one hand, the essential elements and rationale of our charism are sufficiently explicit and well defined in the declarations 'On the Charism of our Founder' and 'On the Spiritual Heritage of the Congregation' (1967), on the other hand, they do not seem to have been sufficiently assimilated personally or communitarily, or fully integrated into our life" (cf. RL, 7, a and b). Our Claretian family's inner need to become vitally aware of its own charism is a matter that concerns the whole Church. Pope Paul's motu proprio "Ecclesiae Sanctae" prescribes that "for the betterment of the Church itself, religious institutes should strive to achieve an authentic understanding of their original spirit, so that adhering to it faithfully in their decisions for adaptation, religious life may be purified of elements that are foreign to it and freed from whatever is outdated" (II, 16, 3).

    Grapevine Prayer Diary Integrated Notes for August The recent centenary of the Great War (1914-18) may make us more mindful of ‘warfare’, physical and spiritual, in the lives and works of many saints and worthies commemorated in August, in which month that War began. 1: The Maccabean martyrs from the second century before the birth of Christ who held firm looking to the resurrecOon when it was decreed that any who “would not conform themselves to the manners of the GenOles should be put to death” (2 Maccabees 6:9, King James Version). The Book of Common Prayer notes “Lammas Day” for 1 August. This comes from the Old English ‘hlaf’, 'loaf' + ‘mæsse’, 'mass'. In England, it was the first harvest fesOval of the year, for the wheat harvest – “a day of first-fruit offerings, on which loaves of bread made from the first corn were blessed”, as Dr. Eleanor Parker puts it. ‘Hlaf’ is the first element in two words which are more familiar: ‘lord’ (from ‘hlaf’ + ‘weard’, ‘ward’ or ‘keeper’) and ‘lady’ (‘hlaf’ + ‘dige’, ‘dough-kneader’). (In the twenOeth century the name “Lammas” was seized upon by pseudo-tradiOonal witches and neopagans for a feast of their own.) 2: Basil (1557) became a ‘Fool for Christ’, wandering around Moscow in all weathers clad in licle if anything more than his long beard, destroying the wares of dishonest tradesmen, and praying in the street for the conversion of sinners. He was one of the few who would openly take Czar Ivan ‘the Terrible’ to task, once presenOng him with a slab of raw beef during his strict Lenten fast, saying, “Why abstain from meat when you murder men?” Ivan, in turn, gave him gifs, but he passed them on to those he knew needed them.

    Call to Holiness June 2014 Bulletin Supplement Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. Each saint the Church honors responded to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts. God calls each one of us to be a saint. June 1: Saint Justin (d. 165) Justin never ended his quest for religious truth even when he converted to Christianity after years of studying various pagan philosophies. As a young man, he was principally attracted to the school of Plato. However, he found that the Christian religion answered the great questions about life and existence better than the philosophers. Upon his conversion he continued to wear the philosopher's mantle, and became the first Christian philosopher. He combined the Christian religion with the best elements in Greek philosophy. In his view, philosophy was a pedagogue of Christ, an educator that was to lead one to Christ. Justin is known as an apologist, one who defends in writing the Christian religion against the attacks and misunderstandings of the pagans. Two of his so-called apologies have come down to us; they are addressed to the Roman emperor and to the Senate. For his staunch adherence to the Christian religion, Justin was beheaded in Rome in 165.     1 Franciscan ProPer of the saints January 2 1. The rank of the celebration (solemnity, feast or memorial) is indicated for each day. If there is no indication, it is an optional memorial. 2. For each solemnity and feast a proper Mass is provided in its entirety. This is therefore used as given. 3. For memorials: a) Proper texts, given on some days, must always be used; b) When there is a reference to a particular common, the most appropriate texts should be chosen according to the principles at the beginning of the commons. The page reference in each case indicates only the beginning of the common to which reference is made. c) If the rederence is to more than one common, one or the other may be used, according to pastoral need. It is always permissible to interchange texts from several Masses within the same common. For example, if a saint is both a martyr and a bishop, either the common of martyrs or the common of pastor (bishops) may be used. d) In addition to the commons which express a special characteristic holiness (e.g., of martyrs, virgins, or pastors), the texts from the common of saints, referring to holiness in general may always be used. For example, in the case of a saint who is both a virgin and a martyr, texts from the common of saints in general may be used, in addition to texts from the common of martyrs or the common of virgins. e) The prayers over the gifts and after communion, unless there are proper prayers, may be taken either from the common or from the current liturgical season.
