Community Services began under a 1994 government mandate to provide telecommunications services in under-serviced, disadvantaged communities. Vodacom’s development of an innovative way to meet this mandate, via entrepreneur-owned and operated phone shops, has both provided affordable communication services to millions of South Africans and empowered thousands of previously disadvantaged individuals with income-generating opportunities and lasting business skills. The Community Services program now provides over 23,000 cellular lines at over 4,400 locations throughout South Africa. BUSINESS MODEL Vodacom Community Services provides telecommunications services in townships and other disadvantaged communities at government-mandated prices that are well below commercial rates. The program, although initially subsidized by Vodacom, now covers its costs with revenue from sales. The Community Services model emphasizes the establishment of phone shop franchises, owned and operated by local entrepreneurs from within disadvantaged communities.

Two 21% over the Christmas period and 22% on New Year’s Day. service offerings are available – FrontRow Club and FrontRow The SMS decline could be attributed to Cell C’s free WhatsApp Premiere. The Premiere service offers movie rentals at R15 per older offering, which has been extended to end March 2015, and title and R27 for latest titles.

    Online harm reduction – a statutory duty of care and regulator April 2019 About this report The authors The authors Lorna Woods and William Perrin have vast experience in regulation and free speech issues. Lorna is Professor of Internet Law in the School of Law at the University of Essex and a member of the Human Rights Centre there. She started her career as a solicitor focussing on the TMT sectors. On becoming an academic, her research areas have lain in these fields. Recent publications include: ‘Video-sharing platforms in the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive’ (2019) 23 Comms Law 127; ‘Competition Law and Telecommunications’ in Telecommunications Law and Regulation Walden (ed) (5th ed); ‘Digital Freedom of Expression’ in Douglas-Scott and Hatzis (eds) Research Handbook on EU Law and Human Rights. She currently teaches internet and data protection law and copyright law, but has also taught media law, competition law and EU law. She was a solicitor in private practice specialising in telecoms, media and technology law. William has worked on technology policy since the 1990s, was a driving force behind the creation of OFCOM and worked on regulatory regimes in gas and electricity, alcohol and entertainment licensing, gambling and many economic and social sectors while working in the UK government’s Cabinet Office, Downing Street and Department of Trade and Industry.     26 SAJEMS NS 16 (2013) No 1 VODACOM AND MTN’S BRAND POSITIONING BASED ON THE BRAND ASSOCIATIONS OF PRINCIPAL ESTATE AGENTS IN GAUTENG Hennie Mentz Marketing Research, Telkom SA Johan W Strydom and Sharon Rudansky-Kloppers Department of Business Management, University of South Africa Accepted: April 2012 Abstract This article investigates Vodacom and MTN’s brand positioning based on the perceptions of a group of LSM seven to ten respondents who are principal estate agents in Gauteng. An empirical study was conducted. The profile of the sample in terms of access to telecommunication-related services confirmed that of individuals in the LSM seven to ten groups with a skew towards LSM ten. As a minimum requirement for the target market brands in the category should be strongly associated with the statements market leader, local brand, technologically sophisticated brand, trusted brand, South African brand and prestigious/upmarket brand. At an overall level, Vodacom has established a more favourable brand positioning compared to MTN. However, both Vodacom and MTN have failed to establish a personal brand relationship with the target market.
