An IT Legacy Booklet March 2016 IT Legacy Article Compendium 1 INTRODUCTION – LOWELL A. BENSON, EDITOR Write a Book? How about an autobiography? Shortly after the Information Technology (IT) Legacy Committee was formed, Dick Lundgren began to write Legacy articles for the VIP Club newsletter. During the committee’s decade of volunteering, several other committee members have also written Legacy associated newsletter items. This booklet1 is a collection of those VIP Club newsletter articles. The first several articles are the history of the Legacy Committee as we felt our way through the quagmire of gathering documents and hardware artifacts and then cataloging them. So, to some degree, this is both a book and the IT Legacy Committee’s autobiography. This book complements our December 2015 ‘Article for the Month’. That too was a booklet: Measuring Success = Volunteer Hours; recapping a decade with summaries of over 100 on-line IT Legacy articles. I dedicate this document to James 'Rapp' Rapinac who passed away 23 January 2016. Rapp was a steadfast supporter of our legacy initiatives and a good friend. The Stanley Hotel History
The Stanley Hotel History: The property of the Stanley hotel was a favorite of Mr. Windham Thomas Whydham‐Quin the fourth Earl of Dunraven. He would come to the area for his summer hunting. “Lord Dunraven” wanted to put a Hunting lodge and game preserve. Wyndham Thomas Quinn the 4th Earl of Dunraven Dunraven hired some local Agents and purchased 15,000 acres from the U.S. Government. Soon after the purchase there were claims filed by twenty‐one different parties including Mr. R.Q. McGregor. They all claimed that Dunraven had no right to the land because he was not a U.S. citizen. Mr. Dunraven lost the property due to the claims of Mr. McGregor. F.O. Stanley A local who wanted to purchase the land for himself had hired R.Q. McGregor. This was Mr. Freelan Oscar Stanley. Freelan Oscar (F.O.) Stanley was born in 1849; he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1903 and was told to move to Colorado because the “fresh mountain air” would help his condition. Mr. Stanley and his wife moved to a home located at 1401 Gilpin St in Denver. After a month in Denver, he was showing no signs of change. Arrangements were made for him to visit a friend’s cabin in Estes Park. Mr. & Mrs. Stanley fell in love with the area and in 1904 purchased 8.4 acres of their own. F.O. Stanley’s sister Flora Jane Record Tileston, who would become Mrs. Stanley (1848‐1949) was an active member of the community, she was known for dressing up as a Gypsy and doing fortune telling at fundraisers for the Estes Park Women’s Club They purchased the property with the assistance of Mr. -

110 YEARS OF AMERICAN STYLE: BUICK CELEBRATES ITS ANNIVERSARY WITH A DISPLAY AT THE AACA MUSEUM By Richard P. Sills Buick, one of the oldest surviving brands of American automobiles, celebrated its 110th anniversary on May 19, 2013. It is fitting that this milestone occasion is celebrated by a special display, "Beautiful Buicks: 110 Years of American Style", at the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. The display coincides with Riviera's 50th anniversary, and the AACA Museum's 10th anniversary. Visitors to the museum are greeted by six Buicks in the lobby, representing the evolution of the marque from horseless carriage to modern high‐performance. On the turntables are a 1910 Buick Model 10 Surrey, owned by the Museum and "adopted" by the Mason‐Dixon Chapter of BCA, and a 1987 GNX loaned by Buick Heritage Alliance board member Guy Bennett of Wayland, New York. The GNX is #470 of just 547 produced, and has less than 600 miles since new. It still has the factory‐installed plastic covers on the seats and carpets. It was sold new by Mr. Bennett's dealership, which has been selling Buicks continuously since 1922. Four other Buicks in the lobby of the Museum represent outstanding examples of the marque as it appeared over the years: 1935 Model 96S Sport Coupe, one of 41 produced and believed to be the only known survivor. Resplendent in Ambassador Maroon with tan leather interior, this elegant coupe is equipped with side mounted tires with steel covers and a luggage rack. It is owned by the Bulgari Collection of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and was restored to participate in Buick's centennial celebration in 2003.' 1964 Rivera, Regal Black with red interior, an elegant example of the first generation of Buick's personal luxury car that was a design triumph of Bill Mitchell and Ned Nickles. -

Decades of Reform: Prostitutes, Feminists, and the War on White Slavery By: Jodie Masotta Under the direction of: Professor Nicole Phelps & Professor Major Jackson University of Vermont Undergraduate Honors Thesis College of Arts and Sciences, Honors College Department of History & Department of English April 2013 Introduction to Project: This research should be approached as an interdisciplinary project that combines the fields of history and English. The essay portion should be read first and be seen as a way to situate the poems in a historical setting. It is not merely an extensive introduction, however, and the argument that it makes is relevant to the poetry that comes afterward. In the historical introduction, I focus on the importance of allowing the prostitutes that lived in this time to have their own voice and represent themselves honestly, instead of losing sight of their desires and preferences in the political arguments that were made at the time. The poetry thus focuses on providing a creative and representational voice for these women. Historical poetry straddles the disciplines of history and English and “through the supremacy of figurative language and sonic echoes, the [historical] poem… remains fiercely loyal to the past while offering a kind of social function in which poetry becomes a ritualistic act of remembrance and imagining that goes beyond mere narration of history.”1 The creative portion of the project is a series of dramatic monologues, written through the voices of prostitutes that I have come to appreciate and understand as being different and individualized through my historical research The characters in these poems should be viewed as real life examples of women who willingly became prostitutes.
