CHAPTER 13 Part One CHAPTER 1 Harvey Rolfe was old enough to dine with deliberation, young and healthy enough to sauce with appetite the dishes he thoughtfully selected. You perceived in him the imperfect epicure. His club had no culinary fame; the dinner was merely tolerable; but Rolfe's unfinished palate flattered the second−rate cook. He knew nothing of vintages; it sufficed him to distinguish between Bordeaux and Burgundy; yet one saw him raise his glass and peer at the liquor with eye of connoisseur. All unaffectedly; for he was conscious of his shortcoming in the art of delicate living, and never vaunted his satisfactions. He had known the pasture of poverty, and the table as it is set by London landladies; to look back on these things was to congratulate himself that nowadays he dined. Beyond the achievement of a vague personal distinction at the Metropolitan Club, he had done nothing to make himself a man of note, and it was doubtful whether more than two or three of the members really liked him or regarded him with genuine interest. His introduction to this circle he owed to an old friend, Hugh Carnaby, whose social position was much more clearly defined: Hugh Carnaby, the rambler, the sportsman, and now for a twelvemonth the son−in−law of Mrs Ascott Larkfield. Through Carnaby people learnt as much of his friend's history as it concerned anyone to know: that Harvey Rolfe had begun with the study of medicine, had given it up in disgust, subsequently was 'in business', and withdrew from it on inheriting a competency. They were natives of the same county, and learnt their Latin together at the Grammar School of Greystone, the midland town which was missed by the steam highroad, and so preserves much of the beauty and tranquillity of days gone by. Rolfe seldom spoke of his own affairs, but in talking

BEST N° 216 Juillet 1986 INTERNATIONAL PUR FLEURON DU ROCK ANGLO-ECOSSAIS, ROD STEWART TROUVA LA GLOI- RE MAIS LAISSA BIEN DES REGRETS EN EMIGRANT AUX USA, OU POURTANT L’ON N’EST PAS FICHU DE TAPER CORRECTEMENT DANS UN BALLON ROND...

  • Review of Guillermo Del Toro: Film As Alchemic Art
Review of Guillermo del Toro: Film as Alchemic Art Ian Pettigrew University of Miami, [email protected] Volume 3.2 (2014) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2014.103 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This is the first book length scholarly consideration of del Toro’s work and it will certainly not be the last as del Toro continues to prove himself as one of the most interesting and rewarding filmmakers working today. McDonald and Clark’s book lays a solid foundation for whatever work may follow in this impressive and comprehensive reading of del Toro’s cinema. Review of McDonald Keith and Clark, Roger, Guillermo del Toro: Film as Alchemic Art. New York: Bloomsbury Publishing Inc., 2014. 233 pp. ISBN 9781441124494. Reviewed by: Ian Pettigrew, University of Miami Guillermo del Toro exemplifies a new type of auteur that has adapted as an artist to the social networking era and contemporary transnational cinema. Keith McDonald and Roger Clark’s approach to del Toro accepts the Mexican born director as such, investigating both the roles he plays within Hollywood and the international cinema community and also providing explorations of each of his eight films to date. As a scholar of Del Toro myself, I found my understanding of this filmmaker enriched by readings of his works that I have never considered and furthermore, my comprehension of contemporary auteurism expanded.

  • Mental and Intellectual Disabilities Sane Or Insane?
Mental and Intellectual Disabilities Sane or Insane? The Madness of Emperor Caligula In his sixth satire, Juvenal (ca. –) lashes out uncommonly strongly against the depraved and deceptive female race. Magic, occult sorcery and love potions are amongst the sharpest weapons of the so-called weaker sex. In this context the satirical poet recalls the times of ‘Nero’s uncle’.In doing so, he is making a direct reference to the Emperor Caligula (–), who was generally known as ‘a madman’ (furere). He blames the Empress Caesonia: she was believed to have rubbed his forehead with the remains of a baby chick that could not yet stand on its own legs. During Caligula’s reign, the entire world was in chaos. It was as if Juno had made her husband mad. In the time of Juvenal, Caligula’s insanity must have been legendary. Surely, this madness was not only the subject of satire several decades after the emperor’s death. Even at the court of Emperor Nero, Seneca was convinced that life in the palace during the time of Caligula must have been hell. Seneca also refers to the ‘rampages’ (dementia) of the young emperor, without going into further clinical detail. Later, Tacitus refers to the young emperor’s impulsive spirit and exaggerated boldness – such terms obviously do not equate to insanity. Those who would read Suetonius’ biography of Caligula from a clinical psychiatric perspective are sure to find more than enough material to make a devastating diagnosis of the emperor. Suetonius pulled no punches: this emperor was ‘a monster’ (monstrum). Psychiatrists would have immediately labelled him a sadist.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 17 (Autumn 2018)
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 17 (Autumn 2018) The Strain (FX, 2014-17) Adapted from a trilogy of novels of the same name co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the TV series The Strain (2014-2017) combines elements of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, del Toro’s auteur style of storytelling, and post-9/11 anxieties, updating vampire-focused horror fiction for a contemporary audience. The show begins with a clear parallel to Dracula’s journey to England, with a plane, in place of the novel’s ship, landing in New York before going into radio silence. Fearing a possible terrorist attack, the CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) sends Dr Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) to investigate. On-board, he discovers that all the passengers are dead and that they are infected with parasitic worms. It is revealed that the plane was carrying The Master (voiced by Robin Atkin Downes), a vampire who aims to spread an epidemic throughout New York City, which will turn as many civilians into vampires as possible. The Dracula parallels continue throughout the pilot, as for example with the introduction of Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley), who is a clear analogue for Abraham Van Helsing, and is a key component of the show’s conscious echoes of its source material. The programme as a whole focuses on a ragtag group of survivors, ranging from pest exterminator Fet (Kevin Durand), to retired luchador Angel (Joaquín Cosío), and a number of others who are forced to work together to stop the vampires.
