CLENCH Vol. I, No. 8 December, 1947 This, the last number of Volume I, is devoted substantially to the first annual Season Summary of Lepidoptera in North America. The re gion was divided into eight fairly uniform faunistic areas, for each of which a ge-neral sunmary was compiled. This year five of ·the eight were sU.mmarized by an individual member within the area. In aucceeding years it is planned to have all areas so treated. In all, 43 different members participated in the reports. These ar.e listed at the end of each area sunmary. Of course: each of the five signed compilers provided a large share of material for the report for his area. All areas were represented, but a particularly weak response from the Southeast and Central areas decreased the significance of sum maries #5 and #6. Area #1 was the most completely covered. This year three members collected extensively in the Far North and ·two reports, covering well ... separated sections,' make that area probably better cover ed this year than usual. Certain important gaps appear in·thls ~aar.ts record, with the following sections missing and needing attention: Nev ada, New MeXico, Idaho, Montana, the Canadian Far dVest, most of Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and the Dakotas, the entire 'Southeast, except Flor ida and Virginia, Minnesota, Wisconsin, OntariO, eastern Michigan, Iowa, most of Ohio and Pennsylvania, and Newfoundland. Eventually we hope ·to extend the surrunaries through Mexico. -

The moth exists only in captivity, having been artificially selected from a wild progenitor, generally recognized as Samia canningi (Hutton) of the Himalayas. In the taxonomic and sericultural literature, there has been considerable confusion and inconsistency regarding the correct authorship of the name Phalaena ricini as originally described. The author of P. ricini has most often been cited as Boisduval, but other researchers have attributed authorship to Anderson, Jones, Donovan, or Hutton. The original description was located, thus revealing that P. ricini should be credited to Sir William Jones. In turn, the date of publication fixes the nameP. ricini as the senior subjective synonym for both the wild and cultivated entities, thereby forcing Saturnia canningi into synonymy. Thirteen species of nine genera were found in the area. The fauna is compared with those of other Mexican localities in published papers. This is the second of a series of papers on the Lepidoptera fauna RESULTS of "Rancho Nuevo," San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico dealing with the family Saturniidae. The description of the study area A total of 13 species of 9 genera were found in the study area, 2 is as follows (see also Beutelspacher, 1995): location is in central of which are considered endemics to the area: Syssphinx gomezi Chiapas, at 16°40'13"N and 92°33'49"W. The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Spilarctia robusta (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea: Erebidae) was se- quenced and analyzed. The circular mitogenome is made up of 15,447 base pairs (bp). It contains a set of 37 genes, with the gene complement and order similar to that of other lepidopterans. The 12 protein coding genes (PCGs) have a typical mitochondrial start codon (ATN codons), whereas cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene utilizes unusually the CAG codon as documented for other lepidopteran mitogenomes. Four of the 13 PCGs have incomplete termination codons, the cox1, nad4 and nad6 with a single T, but cox2 has TA. It comprises six major intergenic spacers, with the exception of the A+T-rich region, spanning at least 10 bp in the mitogenome. -

Ltd., Nonsan 32923, Korea 2The Institute for Conservation of Wild Species, Daejeon 34704, Korea 3National Institute of Ecology, Seocheon 33657, Korea ABSTRACT We surveyed the biodiversity of lepidopterous insects in Jindo Island using UV bucket trap in July 2016 to determine the relationship between surrounding environment and ecosystem in order to contribute to biodiversity conservation and management of coastal islands in Korea. Based on our survey results, a total of 262 lepidopterous insect species in 16 families were collected from Jindo Island. Members belonging to families Noctuidae and Geometridae made up approximately half of the total species (86 species [32.82%] in Noctuidae and 44 species [16.79] in Geometridae). There were 29 species (11.07%) belonging to Crambidae and 28 species (10.69%) belonging to Pyralidae. As a result of all collections based on previous literature and this study, a total of 730 species belonging to 34 families were collected from Jindo Island, including 33 protected species, 242 species (33.15%) belonging to Noctuidae (the most abundant), 124 species (16.99%) belonging to Geometridae, 79 species (10.82%) belonging to Crambidae, and 65 species (8.90%) belonging to Pyralidae. The most frequently collected species was Lamoria glaucalis in this syudy. Our results on the diversity of lepidopterous insects will provide basic information for future investigation on diverse changes in the ecosystem of Jindo Island, Korea. -
