Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

In this paper we investigated the influence of beech forest management history [i.e. over-mature coppices (OC) and coppices in conversion to high forests (CCHF)], climatic, topographic and microhabitat characteristics on ground beetle diversity (measured as total relative abundance, species richness, Shannon diversity and abundance of the endangered endemic species Carabus olympiae) in northern Italy. The diversity of forest specialist carabids was higher in OC and in forest stands characterized by a higher mean temperature and lower relative humidity. Moreover, we detected a positive response of several diversity variables to coarse wood debris cover or volume, herb cover, and the standard deviation of tree diameter. Currently, -

Bulletin 14 of the European Dry Grassland Group Introduction The spring has come at last. Soon, all European naturalists will be very busy with their fieldwork. Before this happens, however, we invite you to read this Bulletin issue, which presents several interesting contributions and news on the numerous EDGG activities. The number of EDGG members exceeded 800 last month. Soon, the key EDGG events will take place - the EDGG research expedition to Sicily (Italy) and the European Dry Grassland Meeting in Prespa (Greece). You can find the most topical information about their preparation on the following pages. You can learn about the development of four prepared special issues focussing on grasslands. You can also learn which grasslands belong to the biodiversity hotspots at small scales. Besides that, you can find here information on the upcoming meetings and events, three book reviews and numerous smaller announcements from our members. Maybe you will notice that in this issue we have used some new graphical elements. We hope you like the changes! To make this and the future Bulletins more user-friendly, we have also adopted some structural changes and developed a fixed sequence of sections. The longer contributions (reports and research articles) in the central part of the Bulletin will have the structure of normal scientific papers so that they could easily be printed, posted and shared as separate items. DISTRIBUCION Distribución mediterránea montana: rango Penibético, Sierra Nevada (Granada) (2-4,7- 9). UTM (2) 30SVG60, 30SVF69. (7) 30SVG60, 30SVG40, 30SVF69, 30SVF79. BIOLOGIA Especie carnívora y detritívora, muy especializada al hábitat alpino (3). Presenta actividad diurna. No parece mostrar una alta especialización en la dieta, recurriendo a un alimento alternativo. Especialización reproductiva (5). MAPA 80 HABITAT Forma alpina: especie que vive en cumbres altas, en suelo desnudo o bajo piedras y rocas, en áreas desoladas, desprovistas de vegetación, a veces cerca de la línea de nieves perpetuas (1); en pastizales xéricos; desde los 2.500 a 3.400 m. de altitud. Es una especie geófila especialmente con las condiciones meteorológicas adversas (5). POBLACION El área sobre la que el taxón se distribuye es muy pequeño. El tamaño poblacional es mediano. Las poblaciones están restringidas a zonas montañosas y se sospechan estables (6). La distribución está bien conocida y su presencia es predecible en todo su rango. Los factores que actúan en su distribución y población son desconocidos o cuestionables (5). AMENAZAS Dada la distribución tan restringida y la fragilidad del biotopo montano, todos aquellos factores que puedan alterar mínimamente su hábitat constituyen graves amenazas. Actúa especialmente de esta forma la presión turística. -

One of the best studied taxo- nomic groups in decline is the butterflies. Here, we review evidence for such declines using five systematic studies from southern Sweden that compare old butterfly surveys with the current situation. Additionally, we provide data on butterfly and burnet moth extinctions in the region’s counties. In some local areas, half of the butterfly fauna has been lost during the last 60–100 years. -

Although the frozen larvae toleratecl -19'C down to for 24 hrs, yet they avoided inoculative freezing by two ways: 1) to prevent water invasion onto ventraHntegument, through which ice-inoculation occurred, by lateral hairs and silken mat, 2) to choose hibernating site on east-northern surface of host tree trunk, where inoculation should hardly occur. The larvae accumulated glycerol in haemolymph to the amount of 6.5% of fresh body weight, together with O.5% trehalose. For comparison, cold resistance in larvae of Sasakia charondu hibernating in Iitter layer was also studied. They showed no inoculation avoidance de$pite re]atively weak ability of freezing resistance, and cuntained trehalose (1.4%) but no glycerol. Introduction Most insects hibernating above the ground in temperate or cold regions are exposed to coldness, more or Iess, hence they have developed abirities for cold resistance. Apart from co]d avoidance by migration or microhabitat selection (Hoshikawa et al., 1988), cold resistance has been studied along two lines : supercooling and freezing resistance (Asahina, 1969; Tsumuki, 1988; Leather et al,, 1993). And once acquired enough cold resistance, hibernating period is regarded as relatively safe and stable season in terms of population dynamics (Sakagami et al., 1984). -

The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Spilarctia robusta (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea: Erebidae) was se- quenced and analyzed. The circular mitogenome is made up of 15,447 base pairs (bp). It contains a set of 37 genes, with the gene complement and order similar to that of other lepidopterans. The 12 protein coding genes (PCGs) have a typical mitochondrial start codon (ATN codons), whereas cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene utilizes unusually the CAG codon as documented for other lepidopteran mitogenomes. Four of the 13 PCGs have incomplete termination codons, the cox1, nad4 and nad6 with a single T, but cox2 has TA. It comprises six major intergenic spacers, with the exception of the A+T-rich region, spanning at least 10 bp in the mitogenome. -

May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males.
