Recommended by Elliott: “I love how it involves the culture of sports. You get an inner look on a sports story or event that you never really knew about. Brings real life and sports together in a fantastic way.” 99% Invisible From the podcast website: “Ever wonder how inflatable men came to be regular fixtures at used car lots? Curious about the origin of the fortune cookie? Want to know why Sigmund Freud opted for a couch over an armchair? 99% Invisible is about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about — the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world.” Recommended by Scott ABCA Calls from the Clubhouse Interviews with coaches in the American Baseball Coaches Association Recommended by Donnie, who is head coach of varsity baseball and says the podcast covers “all aspects of baseball, culture, techniques, practices, strategy, etc. -

Medicare for All' That You Will Ever Need
HEALTHCARE The Only Guide to 'Medicare for All' That You Will Ever Need Timothy Faust 2/14/19 10:01am x So, about that ad blocker… Will you consider disabling it? Yes, ads can be annoying. But when you whitelist us on your ad blocker it allows us to continue to bring you sharp news and commentary you can use as a distraction from the gaping void. I've Whitelisted Photo: Getty Healthcare has claimed its prime spot in the great zodiac of policy issues in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. As it should: Tens of thousands of Americans die a year from lack of health insurance, and in total, nearly half of American adults under 65 are either uninsured or underinsured, meaning they have insurance plans which don’t cover what they need at prices they can afford. In the coming weeks, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) is set to release a new “Medicare for All” bill. I’m generally inclined to distrust the policy gestures of elected officials, but I’ve read a detailed overview of the bill from Jayapal’s office and I’m happy to say that this bill is astonishingly strong, and should become the baseline for federal legislation toward single-payer healthcare. (I’ll discuss why in a minute.) But Jayapal’s bill joins a crowded mess of at least eight other healthcare policies being bandied about among Democrats. I couldn’t fault anyone for x getting confused when candidates talk about “Medicare for All,” or So, about that ad blocker… Will you consider disabling it? “Medicare Extra for All,” or “Medicare for America,” or the “public option.” The relatively simple problems of health finance have been made very Yes, ads can be annoying. -
Usofcare 2018 Annual Report
Toward a Healthy Future 2018 ANNUAL REPORT TABLEOF CONTENTS 4 | Letter from the Executive Director and Board Chair 5 | Year One by the Numbers 6 | United States of Care in the States 8 | Policy Resources 10 | Case Studies from the Field 12 | United States of Care’s Public Opinion Research 14 | Driving the Health Care Conversation 15 | United States of Care in the News 18 | United States of Care Inaugural Convening —The Path Ahead: A Road Map for American Health Care 19 | Staff and Fellows 20 | Board of Directors 21 | Founder’s Council 22 | Support DEAR FRIENDS, United States of Care was founded on a vision that so many Americans share but that seems, to many, to be out of reach: affordable health care for every American. Recently, Americans have seen their health care security become the subject of one of the longest political standoffs that the country has seen. For most Americans, their objectives are simple: to be able to afford to take care of their families, keep them healthy, and know that no one—no Congress, no insurance company, no politician—will take that away. That’s where United States of Care, completing its first year of operations, is focusing our work—affordable health care for every American that will be a durable legacy. The question for the country will increasingly not be about whether Americans should have the important protections of health security that are fundamental to happiness and prosperity, but how and when. United States of Care was founded on the vision that this can and will happen if millions get engaged and have a voice, if policymakers are given tools and support, and if people come together with their expertise around the best ideas that can unite us in these simple goals. -
Mediated Political Participation: Comparative Analysis of Right Wing and Left Wing Alternative Media
Mediated Political Participation: Comparative Analysis of Right Wing and Left Wing Alternative Media A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Nune Grigoryan August 2019 © 2019 Nune Grigoryan. All Rights Reserved. This dissertation titled Mediated Political Participation: Comparative Analysis of Right Wing and Left Wing Alternative Media by NUNE GRIGORYAN has been approved for the School of Media Arts & Studies and the Scripps College of Communication by Wolfgang Suetzl Assistant Professor of Media Arts & Studies Scott Titsworth Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii Abstract GRIGORYAN, NUNE, PhD, August 2019, Mass Communication Mediated Political Participation: Comparative Analysis of Right Wing and Left Wing Alternative Media Director of dissertation: Wolfgang Suetzl Democracy allows a plural media landscape where different types of media perform vital functions. Over years, the public trust towards mainstream media has been eroding, limiting their ability to fulfill democratic functions within the American society. Meanwhile, the Internet has led to proliferation of alternative media outlets on digital space. These platforms allow new outreach and mobilizing opportunities to the once peripheral alternative media. So far, the literature about alternative media have been heavily focused on left-wing alternative media outlets, while the research on alternative right-wing media has remained scarce and fragmented. Only few studies have applied a comparative analysis approach to study these outlets. Moreover, research that examines different aspects of alternative media such as content and audience reception is more rare. This study aims to demonstrate the heterogeneity of alternative media by highlighting their history and functions within the American democracy. -
