FRAMING FAITH: RELIGION COVERAGE IN TIME AND NEWSWEEK, 2004-2008 by KIMBERLY D. DAVIS (Under the Direction of LEARA D. RHODES) ABSTRACT Open any newsmagazine and you’re likely to see some type of religion or faith coverage. The role of the media, particularly magazines, in shaping how we view religion and faith issues has been somewhat understudied. This study used framing theory and textual analysis to examine faith and religion coverage in Time and Newsweek from 2004-2008, and how journalists make meaning of these issues for an audience, whether it is a part of a specific story about religion or faith, or a story that includes some aspect of religion or faith. The analysis yielded four major frames: culture, politics, religion vs. science and personality. This study adds to the already growing field of study in the framing of religion and mass media, and lays the groundwork for future analysis of the representation of faith or religion in mass media, particularly mass- circulating magazines. Her shaky voice belies her strength and focused intentions, as she leans her sixty-year old body over the microphone to speak. “Dear Miss Buchanan,” her voice rings out, slowly reading a letter that fired an African American teacher from the local school system. Mrs. Thompson’s words unroll a profound social paradox: the integration of White students into Black schools after the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education verdict illogically caused an increased segregation of Black teachers. The Broadcasting Code prohibits any payment that may influence the selection or rotation of music for broadcast. In view of the action taken by the Licensee when it became aware of the presenter’s actions, we considered the matter resolved. Introduction Capital XTRA is a local radio station providing an urban contemporary black music service for African and Afro-Caribbean communities in North London. It is simulcast nationally on DAB, satellite and cable services. Capital XTRA’s licence is held by Capital Xtra Limited, which is owned by Global Media & Entertainment Limited (“Global”). DJ Tiiny was a show broadcast weekly on Friday evenings. A complainant alleged that the presenter played some artists’ music tracks in return for payment. Global contacted Ofcom and confirmed the allegation, saying that it had been alerted to the matter on 27 January 2021 and that the presenter’s contract of employment had been terminated the following day. Ofcom considered the matter raised potential issues under the following Code rule: Rule 10.5: “No commercial arrangement that involves payment, or the provision of some other valuable consideration, to the broadcaster may influence the selection or rotation of music for broadcast”. Issue 424 of Ofcom’s Broadcast and On Demand Bulletin 12 April 2021 1 We therefore requested comments from Global on how programmes in which the presenter had played music tracks in return for payment complied with this rule. -

Voice, Speech, and Acting Faculty Email: [email protected] (email preferred) Office: online Course Description This online course provides an introduction to the field of voiceover for actors and curious individuals. We will cover acting for voiceover, home studio setup, mic technique, and recording and editing. Through analyzing, performing, and critiquing voiceover copy, we will explore two maJor areas of voiceover: commercial and audiobook narration. Leading figures in the field will be studied to uncover their technique and approach. Industry standard learning materials (including podcasts) will be reviewed and a plan will be built to continue voiceover work after the class. This online course will focus on preparing and sharing individual assignments. Through repeatedly sharing our work and learning from others, we will develop foundational voiceover skills and reinforce the course’s learning obJectives. Attendance for the full duration of the class time is mandatory. Course Objectives On the completion of this course students will: ● Gain an acting technique to bring voiceover copy to life ● Gather a knowledge of the types of voiceover, understand the differing demands for each type and identify key players in those fields ● Learn how to record and send industry acceptable auditions to potential clients, pay-to- play sites, and weekly workout groups. ● Build a voiceover plan to develop your voiceover skills, utilize industry standard resources, and begin to work toward entering the voiceover market.
