A dark stained fissure occurs in the limestone ofthe Togopi Formation within the study area striking almost perpendicular to the oil-stained band reported previously. A brief organic geochemical characteristic of this limestone fissure is presented here and compared to the previously reported sample. A comparison is also made to a non-stained

Rancha-Rancha, Labuan, F.T., Malaysia Existing Environment Chapter 3 Existing Environment 3.1 Introduction This chapter outlines and records the existing conditions, in qualitative and quantitative terms, of the physico-chemical, biological and socio-economics environment at the project site (reclamation and sand borrow) and its surrounding areas (within 5-km radius) prior to implementation of the Project. As mentioned in Chapter 2, this Project two (2) sites, i.e. 1) the reclamation site, where proposed reclamation and capital dredging in near vicinity to attain the required draft; and 2) the proposed sand borrow site, where sand materials will be extracted and transported to the reclamation site. The purpose of describing the existing environmental setting is to establish a reliable “baseline”, which is an important pre-requisite for undertaking an environmental impact assessment and future project monitoring. 3.2 Physico-Chemical Environment 3.2.1 Bathymetry The bathymetrical database for this DEIA study is derived from the C-Map electronic chart. All depths are referred to chart datum and reference in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM-50) coordinate system. Reclamation site: This site is located on the western side of Rancha-Rancha Industrial area facing the Sg Kina Benuwa bay. The bay morphology is composed by a mixture of sand mud and low lying rocks. The bathymetric at this site ranges from -1 MSL to -7 MSL. Sand borrow site: The bathymetric at this site ranges between -5 MSL and -12 MSL (from north to south).

    Geological Society of Malaysia Annual Geological Conference 2002 May 26 - 27, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia Middle Miocene planktonic foraminifera and their implications in the geology of Sabah BASIR JASIN Program Geologi, Pusat Pengajian Sains Sekitaran & Sumber Alam Fakulti Sains & Teknologi, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia 43600 Bangi, Selangor D.E., Malaysia Abstract: Planktonic foraminifera flourished during Middle Miocene. They were recorded from the Ayer, Kuamut, Garinono melanges, the Libong Tuffite, Tungku Formation, Tabanak Conglomerate, and Setap Shale Formation. Three assemblages of planktonic foraminifera were identified from the Libong Tuffite, the Garinono melange, and the Setap Shale Formation. The assemblages indicate an age ranging from the early Middle Miocene Globigerinoides sicanus-Globigerinatella insueta Zone (N 8) to the middle Middle Miocene Globorotaliafohsifohsi Zone (NI2). The occurrence of the planktonic foraminifera suggests that a transgressive event caused the influx of the nutrient-rich water mass into the area. This event was probably related to the rifting of the Sulu Sea and the development of the eastern Sabah deep marine environment where the melanges were deposited. The occurrence of tuff and tuffite indicates volcanic activity in the region. The age of the volcanic tuff is middle Middle Miocene as dated by planktonic foraminifera. Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. Sabah has a diverse ethnic population of just over 3 million people with 32 recognised ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Malays (these include the many different cultural groups that originally existed in their own homeland within Sabah), Chinese and “non‐official immigrants” (mainly Filipino and Indonesian). In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

This paper reviews the challenges in the water supply provision, water source availability and quality and the distribution approaches in rural Sabah. The main challenges to provide potable water in Sabah is the variance in terrain and geographical distance between populated regions. Review reveals that other than the river water, average annual precipitation of 3000 millimetres (mm) could be harvested for domestic and agricultural purposes. Numbers of aquifer uncovered in the eastern and western region of Sabah with underlying sandstone and Quaternary Alluvium have significant potential for groundwater reservoirs. Aquifer along the coastal areas and islands around Sabah also gives sufficient potable water supplies. Minimal pollutant content was found in all water sources and acceptable under the National Water Standard of Malaysia, except for contaminants coming from septic tanks and agricultural activities. A decentralized water system is more beneficial for Sabah’s rural areas. Smaller scaled plants are flexible to collect from any water sources and treat at the point of use. Expenditure is significantly decreased by a shorter distribution network and lower installation and maintenance cost. Nonetheless, the treatment utilized may be limited to a simpler process as semi- skilled or un-skilled personnel will be required to operate and maintain the system.

Sahari Preface In Sabah, around 53% of the total state land is designated as protected area or conservation site within which human activities are strictly regulated. A large scale plantation industry has been put in place and population growth has been the threats for natural resources around and near the border of protected area and conservation site. There have been increasing needs to develop new incentive mechanism for the better natural resource management. In the meantime, regardless of rapid economic development in Malaysia, Sabah is still suffering from poverty. Most of the needy people live in the mountainous area, thus rural development for poverty eradication is essential for human well-being. Sabah needs to pursue way toward a society in harmony with nature where harmonization between conservation and development can be realized. Sabah has some outstanding management systems like land-use control and environment awareness programme (Environmental Education). In order to promote environment-friendly and sustainable development more, integrated and innovative approaches are indispensable. Considering the above-mentioned matters, IlCA-SDBEC conducted the study on "Economics of River Basin Management for Sustainable Development for Biodiversity and Ecosystems Conservation" from December 2014 to February 2015.

The Convention outlines three main objectives: (1) the conservation of biological diversity; (2) the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and (3) the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. In 2010, in view of the continued decline of global biodiversity, parties to the CBD, in Nagoya, Japan, adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 with the purpose of inspiring broad-based action in support of biodiversity over the next decade by all countries and stakeholders. The sampling was carried out using surber net in October 2015 and January 2016. A total of 1,801 individuals from nine orders of 28 families were collected from Kimanis River. Trichopterans fauna was found to be the prominent taxa in this study. Shannon-Wiener Index of upstream strata was recorded slightly higher than downstream strata with H’= 1.97 and H’= 1.85 respectively. Water integrity of Kimanis River could be considered as excellent with minimal pollution. Both water quality parameters and biotic indices indicated that the aquatic insect population was affected by the water quality in their surroundings. This proved the use of aquatic insect communities as bioindicator for rapid assessment of water quality in CRP.
