Komonchak It has long been known that the leading American Catholic theorist of Church-State relations, John Courtney Murray, S.J., was the object of eccle siastical censure in the mid-1950s. Twenty years ago Donald Pelotte provid ed a generally accurate account of Roman actions against Murray, which I will take to be reasonably familiar to readers and will supplement by recently dis covered archival materials.1 Murray was brought to the attention of the Vatican in 1943 when Bishop Francis Mclntyre, auxiliary bishop of New York, sent to the apostolic delegate, Archbishop Amleto Cicognani, a correspondence between Mclntyre and Murray over the question of inter-religious cooperation.
