The first gravel PCA near Ruthin was a great success, certainly far different from the usual cone dodging on a car park. There has been concern over the future of the 3 Sisters venue but events are still being run so let’s hope it continues. There is a proposal to change the Blue Book with regards to the type of tyres that will be allowed on road rally vehicles which seems unjustified, why can’t any road legal tyre be used ? Please make your views known by responding to the consultation. The F1 season continues to be much more exciting than in several previous years but I don’t think its right that a GP victory should be due to a Safety Car. It would be much fairer if when there’s a Safety Car teams can’t bring cars into the pits. (Les is off on his Hols and this was written before the Monacco GP) Having just watched the highlights of the Portugal Rally it certainly appears that Kris Meeke is emulating his mentor, Colin McRae, by crashing more times than he finishes !     A595 Improvement Transport Scheme Development Non-Technical Summary i A595 Improvement – Transport Scheme Development 1/ Introduction 1. Introduction 1.1 Background 1.1.1 Cumbria County Council is undertaking study work to develop a highway improvement scheme for the A595 between Redmain and Mealsgate. The council has appointed engineering consultants Capita to assist with and support the technical work. 1.1.2 This report is a non-technical summary of the scheme development and options appraisal undertaken to date. It presents an outline of the scheme context and underlying evidence base, the scheme’s objectives, and a description and the rationale for the scheme undergoing consultation. 1.2 Previous Studies 1.2.1 The West of M6 Strategic Connectivity Study identified a number of constraints on Cumbria's key highway corridors, including the A595, related to capacity, safety and resilience. Interventions have been developed to remove these constraints and support plans for economic growth in the County. The A595 around Bothel was one of the sections identified that required improvement. 1.2.2 Following this study, a strategic outline business case was developed for the A595/A66 corridor. The business case brought together all the scheme interventions identified on the corridors in the West of M6 Study and prioritised them. Wesley Linton Abstract The Luego prototype chassis was tested to determine the value of its global torsional stiffness. This value was calculated to be 1330Nm/deg. This value was to be improved upon by the following method: • Creation of a Finite element baseline validation model • Discussed modification of this model • A design improvement study • An optimisation study The creation of a Finite Element baseline validation model using MSC Patran/Nastran software compared favourably with the physical test results with a torsional stiffness value of 1352Nm/deg for a mass of 120.1Kg and an efficiency of 88g/Nm/deg. The discussed modifications had been suggested to Luego upon initial appraisal of the chassis were incorporated into this baseline model and resulted in increases in both torsional stiffness and efficiency. Further, the design improvement study performed resulted in a maximum torsional stiffness of 6448Nm/deg, an increase of 377% over the baseline model. A maximum increase in efficiency of 286% to 23g/Nm/deg for a mass of 148.3Kg accompanied this increase in torsional stiffness.
