Alchemical culture and poetry in early modern England PHILIP BALL Nature, 4–6 Crinan Street, London N1 9XW, UK There is a longstanding tradition of using alchemical imagery in poetry. It first flourished at the end of the sixteenth century, when the status of alchemy itself was revitalised in European society. Here I explain the reasons for this resurgence of the Hermetic arts, and explore how it was manifested in English culture and in particular in the literary and poetic works of the time. In 1652 the English scholar Elias Ashmole published a collection of alchemical texts called Theatrum Chymicum Britannicum, comprising ‘Several Poeticall Pieces of Our Most Famous English Philosophers’. Among the ‘chemical philosophers’ represented in the volume were the fifteenth-century alchemists Sir George Ripley and Thomas Norton – savants who, Ashmole complained, were renowned on the European continent but unduly neglected in their native country. Ashmole trained in law, but through his (second) marriage to a rich widow twenty years his senior he acquired the private means to indulge at his leisure a scholarly passion for alchemy and astrology. A Royalist by inclination, he had been forced to leave his London home during the English Civil War and had taken refuge in Oxford, the stronghold of Charles I’s forces. In 1677 he donated his impressive collection of antiquities to the University of Oxford, and the building constructed to house them became the Ashmolean, the first public museum in England. Ashmole returned to London after the civil war and began to compile the Theatrum, which was intended initially as a two-volume work. -

Prehistoric Times To tell the story of chemistry, it is best to start in prehistoric times with primitive humans. In his quest for survival, and endowed with a natural curiosity, primitive man learned much about his environment. He was aware of physical properties of substances such as color, shape or form, hardness, taste, weight, density in the form of relative weight, and odor. And he was most probably aware of natural physical changes such as water to ice (and vice versa), lava to rock, certain rocks to dust, etc. It is also safe to assume that primitive man, although he had no knowledge of chemistry, was aware of chemical change in the forms of decaying organic matter, natural production of ozone from lightning (by noting the odor of the ozone), wood burning into charcoal and ash, etc. But primitive man was by no means any sort of scientist and he made no logical or organized study of natural phenomena. The information he gathered about the world was passed from generation to generation by memory, demonstration, or by observation without explanation or any understanding of the true reasons for these phenomena. -

ISBN 978--0--88135--396--9.Cloth $45.00 Reviewed by Jole Shackelford University of Minnesota [email protected] The editor of this volume of 22 contributions to a conference held at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia on 19 July 2006 invokes in his introduction the memory of an earlier conference, con- vened in Groningen 17 years prior. He credits that conference with catalyzing a collaboration and informal networking among historians interested in alchemy that led to an efflorescence of alchemical stud- ies and precipitated a need for a new conference to ascertain where the field has gone and to rally a second generation of enthusiasts. I was among those at the 1989 Groningen conference and remember clearly that it commenced with a kind of anti-benediction presented by Nathan Sivin, who proceeded to tell us that the history of alchemy was a dead or dying field, that the few who continued to work in the subject area came to it from other disciplines, not the history of sci- ence, and that until specialists in chemistry, religion, and other dis- ciplines took off their blinders and worked together, combining their viewpoints, the field would not again generate new knowledge. And behold, this is what has happened! The chapters of this collection reflect both existing lines of research and those newly undertaken, in many cases in the spirit of collegiality that Sivin hoped that the Groningen conference had conjured. -

ARTICLES Glass Bellies and Artificial Wombs: Gender, Science, and Reproduction in Early Modern Alchemical Performance Jennifer M. Park How can a man tell “signs of breeding” (Webster 1990, 2.2.2)?1 In John Webster’s Jacobean tragedy The Duchess of Malfi, Bosola, a hired spy, attempts to figure out if the titular character, the Duchess of Malfi, is pregnant. That the duchess’s state remains a secret prompts Bosola to reference the voyeuristic properties of glassmaking. BOSOLA There was a young waiting-woman, had a monstrous desire to see the glass- house. And it was only to know what strange instrument it was, should swell up a glass to the fashion of a woman’s belly. OLD LADY I will hear no more of the glass-house, you are still abusing women! (2.2.5–6, 8– 12) By bringing together the components of the artisanal science of glassmaking—namely, the glass-house, or the site in which glass and glass products were produced, and the glass vessel, one such glass product—Bosola’s fantasy depicts the means for voyeuristic male viewing of the inside of the female body, predicated on his own “monstrous desire to see.” His voyeuristic impulse at this moment is knowingly embedded in the overlap between theatrical and scientific viewing, gesturing at once to the performative disclosure of the duchess’s state of pregnancy for Webster’s audience, and the early “scientific looking” (Tiffany Watt Smith 2014, 7) of artisanal glassmaking and experimentation. The early moderns would have found the duchess’s “glass belly,” and the specifically masculine desire to see the female interior, literalized in the glass vessels that comprised early scientific inquiry and “laboratory” experimentation.2 Bonnie Lander Johnson and Bethany Dubow examine the allegories of creation latent in glassmakers’ practices prompted by Webster’s glassmaking references in The Duchess of Malfi and other works. -
