Cultural tips for the successful grower Cherry Red Currant
Cherry Red Currant – Was developed by the Washington State- Department of Agriculture. Cherry Red has large, dark red fruit with acid flavor. Fruit is high quality and excellent for jams, jelly, and sauces. Plants will grow 4 - 6 feet tall and 2 - 5 feet wide. Commonly grown commercially but can also be used as edible ornamentals or hedges. Cherry Red Currant bears fruit well but attracts aphids, is resistant to powdery mildew and is the hardiest and best yielding currant. Zone 3-8.
Site selection & planting: Currants are easy to grow in moderately fertile well-drained soil in full sun. Water table should not be less than 3’ deep or raised beds may be needed. Get rid of weeds before planting. Dig a hole 1-2 inches deeper than the root and 12 inches wider. Put the plant in the hole and spread roots out. Fill the hole with soil and gentle firm the soil around the plant. Do not push the soil down too hard since this will compact the soil. Delay planting if the ground is very wet or frozen.
