An original signed hard copy of the signature page is on file in University Archives. iii Abstract Aelius Aristides’ Hieroi Logoi and Apuleius’ Metamorphoses have historically achieved joint mention for their unique status as non-Christian accounts documenting a personal relationship to a god. I start with a different observation. These texts stage an encounter with the failure or refusal of one’s own body to function in its capacity as a vehicle for self-presentation – an especially important function to orators of the second century CE. Both texts explore the degree to which language can remake the narrator's fragmented world. Whereas Aristides’ Hieroi Logoi contribute to the orator’s healing process, Apuleius’ Metamorphoses uses the imagined animal body to demonstrate the elusive nature of constituting a whole self. Throughout his Hieroi Logoi, Aristides employs metaphors to solicit his audience’s participation in reconfiguring his relationship to his body and his god. Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, on the other hand, dramatizes a paradox: the protagonist, Lucius, achieves his goal of literary memorialization in the form of the book we hold, and yet the self that is on display is ultimately lost to the reader. iv Acknowledgments First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Susan Stephens, without whose encouragement, support, and generous vision this dissertation would never have been undertaken, let alone completed. Narrating the Body Aelius Aristides and Apuleius were contemporaries.1 As orators of the second century CE, they lived at a time when the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius and his tutor, Fronto, were writing passionately to one another, not only about their mutual love, but also about their physical state and health. In one letter, for example, Fronto writes, “This is the third day that I have been troubled all night long with griping in the stomach and diarrhea. Last night, indeed, I suffered so much that I have not been able to go out, but am keeping my bed…”2 They lived at a time when Galen was treating patients publicly in more or less formal contests with other doctors, and performing dissections and vivisections on animals.3 As Judith Perkins explains, “Galen’s practice of his medical method was making visible the interior of the individual, opening space for an inner life—one that was not mental but physical…Galen’s method …allowed the body to be a signifier of internal depths.”4 In the previous century, as Catherine Edwards argues, the Stoic philosopher Seneca “[translated] the violent and spectacular into the internal world of 1 Apuleius was born in 125 CE and Aristides in 117 CE. The second century CE flourishing of Greek oratory is often referred to (via Flavius Philostratus) as the “second sophistic.” This oratory was a vibrant form of elite male self-fashioning under the Roman Empire and was marked by the strict usage of Attic Greek in epideictic speeches and the demonstration of paideia. Oratory provided the means for a different kind of bodily exposure. Whereas in the Stoicism of Seneca, the body was a staging ground for ethical struggle, in sophistic oratory, the body on stage was a presentation of the self as an integral whole: a real, Greek speaking

    BLOIS, LUKAS DE, The "Eis Basilea" [Greek] of Ps.-Aelius Aristides , Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies, 27:3 (1986:Autumn) p.279 The Ei~ BauLAea of Ps.-Aelius Aristides Lukas de Blois HE AUTHENTICITY of a speech preserved under the title El~ Ba­ T utAia in most MSS. of Aelius Aristides (Or. 35K.) has long been questioned.1 It will be argued here that the speech is a basilikos logos written by an unknown author of the mid-third century in accordance with precepts that can be found in the extant rhetorical manuals of the later Empire. Although I accept the view that the oration was written in imitation of Xenophon's Agesilaus and Isoc­ rates' Evagoras, and was clearly influenced by the speeches of Dio Chrysostom on kingship and Aristides' panegyric on Rome,2 I offer support for the view that the El~ BautAia is a panegyric addressed to a specific emperor, probably Philip the Arab, and contains a political message relevant to a specific historical situation. After a traditional opening (§ § 1-4), the author gives a compar­ atively full account of his addressee's recent accession to the throne (5-14). He praises the emperor, who attained power unexpectedly while campaigning on the eastern frontier, for doing so without strife and bloodshed, and for leading the army out of a critical situation back to his own territory. The author mentions in passing the em­ peror's education (1lf) and refers to an important post he filled just before his enthronement-a post that gave him power, prepared him for rule, and gave him an opportunity to correct wrongs (5, 13).

What indices permit us to trace the emotional reactions of pilgrims in contact with the sacred landscape? What mental processes and emotional reactions made the tangible objects (the monuments, the images, and the rites) into mental objects, and how did these become Wxed in the memory of the pilgrim? With these questions as guidelines, I shall argue that we can apply a contem- porary approach to the investigation of the social functions of ancient pilgrimage. For the exploration of the relationship between the religious experiences of the pilgrim and social instances of collective memory for the reconstruction and reactivation of a sacred traditional landscape, we may turn to a moment in history that provides an unusually dense 254 Marco Galli representation of the internal states of sacred experience.1 This is the period dubbed ‘The Second Sophistic’. RILLO, DR EN H* SUMMARY Introduction: Medicine history gives us the chance to reflect about the Caduceus as the synthesis of the dialectic of the sensible and spiritual life. This opens and horizon of comprehension and allow us to recover the legend of Asclepius and it’s cult with the different symbolic elements that structure it. The legend: The historic and mythological references about Asclepius’ existence gives structure to the legend in a real and not-real environment perduring in the occidental medicine tradition as a mystical reference to the deity for the medical practice. The cult: It’s based in the incubation and synthesizes healing rites and therapeutical practices, as medical as surgical; exercise, sleep cures and amusement activities. The symbol: The linguistic origin of Asclepius’ name, the symbolism of the legend protagonists and the iconographic representation of their attributes, converge in the Caduceus to represent the medical practices and ideas synthesis, all them related to the human life. Conclusion: Asclepius’ perception transcends the Olympic divinity and situates him as the healing archetype; that’s why Caduceus is consistent with the system-world representation that rules the actual medical practice. The au- thor suggests two new Italo-Lusitanian equations in theonymy (namely: 1. Lusit. Laebo = Lat. Laribus, 2. Reve = Lat. Ioui, Osk. diuvei). Both comparisons are firmly documented by the Latin-Lusitanian texts, and additionally the latter bears a close resemblance of the formations (the same innovational declension stem *dyeu¾-, not *diu¾-) and an interesting exclusiveness of the epithets (e.g. Lusit. Reve Laraucu = Lat. Ioui Ladico [both dedications from Orense]). The phonological development of IE. *d to Lusit. r, documented by 4 different instances (2 in- dubitable ones), occurs in some Italic languages, but it is absent from the Celtic language world. Bażyńskiego 4; 80-952 Gdansk; Poland E-mail: [email protected] Received 09 July 2014; accepted 09 July 2014 The paper concerns mythology, rites, philosophical tradition and other intel- lectual inspirations, which have influenced the Western culture’s approach to the male-female dualism in social categories and the culture’s attitude towards the phenomenon of androgyny. This male-female bipartite category and the oc- currence of transgressing it, or not fitting it, is analysed in relation to divergent philosophical and sociological theories, like the thought of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michael Foucault, Judith Butler, etc. The purpose of the paper is to expose – and search for the reason for – Western culture’s ambivalent attitude towards androgyny: perceived either as something odd and stigmatized for not matching the traditional dichotomy in cultural categories, or a perfect dual-unity integrat- ing the two polar opposites in one being.
