HISTORICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE ORIGINS OF REALIST PAINTING IN MAGALLANES (1834-1940) ABSTRACT The paper presents historical information on the origins and modalities of realist painting in Magallanes between 1830-1940, through a review of the production of artists that briefly visited or settled permanently in the region. These works are valorised and classified stylistically as a contribution for more detailed studies by art historians in the future. -

Unpublished original copy kept in the Academia (see Depetris this volume) 4 Revista de la Asociación Geológica Argentina 64 (1): 4 - 7 (2009) DARWIN'S GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN ARGENTINA On the occasion of the 200th. anniversary of Charles Darwin´s birth, the Asocia- ción Geológica Argentina decided to prepare a special issue devoted to the geological research undertaken by Dar- win in Argentina. As it is well known, during his journeys on board HMS Bea- gle under the command of Captain Ro- bert FitzRoy, he had the opportunity to survey overland different areas of South America. Darwin spent nearly three years - between August 1832 and April 1835 - visiting and studying different regions of our country, as illustrated in figure 1. The aim of this special issue is to analy- ze his important geological observations and to emphasize the validity of many of his ideas under a 21st Century perspecti- ve. In order to accomplish this aim, seve- ral key localities that Darwin examined from a geological point of view during his voyage were selected. Such an analy- sis was carried out by several geologists and paleontologists well acquainted with the diverse problems that Darwin faced along his journeys in Argentina. HMS Beagle's main mission was to sur- vey the coasts of southern South Ame- rica, which it carried out during several journeys along the coast. The time nee- ded to chart the coast in details gave Darwin several opportunities to spend considerable time on land. -

The Plant Pioneers of the Strait of Magellan Thousands of Years Ago
The Plant Pioneers of the Strait of Magellan Thousands of years ago, the Strait of Magellan was not what we know now, but rather an ice field. Thanks to the deglaciation, large lakes originated and the soils were covered with the pioneering organisms of the place: liquids, bryophytes and fungi. In this article, scientists Laura Sánchez-Jardón, Bernard Goffinet, Ricardo Rozzi and photographer Felipe Soza describe some of the representatives of these pioneers from the region where they were made in the Strait of Magellan. Twenty thousand years ago the Strait of Magellan was not such, but a vast field of ice. During the deglaciation started some sixteen thousand years ago, the retreat of the ice in its central part and surrounding areas gave rise to large lakes and terrestrial ecosystems whose rocks and soils were progressively covered by pioneering organisms: lichens, bryophytes and fungi. This first discovery of the Strait of Magellan, associated with the melting of the ice cover, was producing unique processes of ecological succession led by small colonizing organisms, plant pioneers that generated the first ecosystems with a unique biota whose exuberance at the "end of the world" it is greater than in any other region of the planet. When Hernando de Magallanes arrived at the southern tip of America five hundred years ago, there was a second discovery of the biota of the strait that today bears his name. The promise of riches offered by the New World, Terra Incognita, motivated scientists to explore the region, who were surprised by the abundance and diversity of lichens, mosses and fungi that grew on the ground and the trunks of subantarctic forests. -

Geological Observations on South America By Charles Darwin GEOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON SOUTH AMERICA CRITICAL INTRODUCTION. Of the remarkable "trilogy" constituted by Darwin's writings which deal with the geology of the "Beagle," the member which has perhaps attracted least attention, up to the present time is that which treats of the geology of South America. The actual writing of this book appears to have occupied Darwin a shorter period than either of the other volumes of the series; his diary records that the work was accomplished within ten months, namely, between July 1844 and April 1845; but the book was not actually issued till late in the year following, the preface bearing the date "September 1846." Altogether, as Darwin informs us in his "Autobiography," the geological books "consumed four and a half years' steady work," most of the remainder of the ten years that elapsed between the return of the "Beagle," and the completion of his geological books being, it is sad to relate, "lost through illness!" Concerning the "Geological Observations on South America," Darwin wrote to his friend Lyell, as follows:—"My volume will be about 240 pages, dreadfully dull, yet much condensed. I think whenever you have time to look through it, you will think the collection of facts on the elevation of the land and on the formation of terraces pretty good." "Much condensed" is the verdict that everyone must endorse, on rising from the perusal of this remarkable book; but by no means "dull." The three and a half years from April 1832 to September 1835, were spent by Darwin in South America, and were devoted to continuous scientific work; the problems he dealt with were either purely geological or those which constitute the borderland between the geological and biological sciences. -

It is not to be cited without the written permission of the team members. Incognita Patagonia returns from Tierra del Fuego with an improved understanding of the region's glacial history and an appreciation for adventure in terra incognita, having traversed the Cloue Icefield and ascended two previously unclimbed peaks. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY INCOGNITA PATAGONIA sought to explore and document the Cloue Icefield on Hoste Island, Tierra del Fuego, Chile, with a focus on observing the icefield's glaciers to develop a chronology of glacier change and associated landforms (Figure 1). We were able to achieve all of our primary observational and exploratory objectives in spite of significant logistical challenges due to the fickle Patagonian weather. Our team first completed a West-East traverse of the icefield in very difficult conditions. We later returned to the glacial plateau with better weather and completed a survey of the major mountains of the plateau, validating two peaks' summit elevations. At the glaciers' margins, we mapped a series of moraines of various ages, including very fresh moraines from recent glacial advances. One glacier showed a well-preserved set of landforms indicating a recent glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), and we surveyed and dated these features. -

ABSTRACT The stratigraphy of Cretaceous marine mudstones in the Fuegian Andes, roughly equivalent to Charles Darwin's clay-slate for- mation, remains a still unsolved problem. Previous records of Albian, Turonian-Coniacian, and Santonian-Campanian bival- ves are combined with new findings of the Late Albian inoceramid Inoceramus anglicus Woods, and the Maastrichtian ammoni- tes Diplomoceras sp., Anagaudryceras sp., Maorites densicostatus (Kilian and Reboul), Maorites sp., and Pachydiscus (Neodesmoceras) sp. to further constrain the Cretaceous stratigraphy of the eastern Fuegian Andes. In addition, new records of distinctive trace fossils and ichnofabric are meaningful for stratigraphic division and delineation of paleoenvironmental settings in these Cretaceous mudstones. The Lower Cretaceous ichnoassemblage of Chondrites targioni (Brongniart) and Zoophycos isp. is consis- tent with the inferred slope-volcaniclastic apron settings of the Yahgan Formation; Nereites missouriensis (Weller) reflects distal basin plain depositional settings for the Beauvoir Formation. In the Upper Cretaceous, the "Estratos de Buen Suceso" record the earliest extensively bioturbated horizons, reflecting prolonged well-oxygenated bottom conditions. In the Bahía Thetis Formation, organic-rich, channel margin or distal basin slaty mudstones record the last occurrence of inoceramid bivalves in the Austral Basin; the generalized absence of trace fossils is consistent with dysoxic bottom conditions.
