2 Welcome to the St. Luke’s 2009 Summer Reader

Dear Parents and Students:

It seems that there is never enough time in the day to sit back and read a book. Our lives are too busy. Although the summer is almost as frantic as the rest of the year, it still remains a time when the pace slows, even if just a little. The long days and pleasant weather provide an excellent opportunity to relax, reflect and read, We believe that these pages include wonderful suggestions to keep the mind engaged in the months ahead. St. Luke’s academic departments have updated some sections and the Librarians’ picks are almost all new. This year we have added a selection of audio books and films recommended by the American Library Association. These are not to be seen as a substitute for reading three of the recommended books over the summer. Rather, they are meant as a supplement to the reading list.

As always, many thanks to Ms. Cole, Mr. Lynch, Ms. Yankura and their art students for the beautiful art work included here.

Enjoy the summer and happy reading.

Yours,

Benjamin Moss Librarian

Cover photo by Gabrielle Levion ’10 How to use this Guide • We hope all members of the St. Luke’s community will peruse the list and choose titles from it for personal enrichment and pleasure.

• We fully expect that all new and returning students to St. Luke’s will have read at least three books from the collection.

• The student’s three (or more) choices may come from any discipline.

• All titles may be obtained through local libraries, bookstores, or on-line. 3 CONTENTS
