CHRISTMAS AND END OF THE YEAR FESTIVITIES PROGRAMME 1 2 MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL SECRETARY FOR TOURISM AND CULTURE On this date, the 600 years anniversary of the Discovery of our islands, celebrating Christmas - and all the best this season has to offer - undertakes a greater and more special meaning. Madeira residents have always been a hospitable people, with contagious joy, who enjoys caring and giving a warm welcome. And imbued in this spirit of sharing and communion, we celebrate our renown and authentic “festa madeirense” (typical Madeira festivity), where sounds, glow, scents and effusiveness of our people are all around, in a scenario, which upon this season, turns Funchal into a magical city. From December 1st to January 6th entertainment rules! Choirs, philharmonic bands and folklore groups parade in the streets, delighting locals and tourists, and brightening up the Christmas Market - where you can find the most genuine products from Madeira - but also, an exclusive area dedicated to children and the traditional nativity scene which surprises every single year, alongside the Christmas lights that are displayed throughout the city. True to tradition and honouring the hospitality that identifies and characterizes us as a people, we feel ready to welcome and celebrate with everybody who choose to visit Madeira this season. Because, after all, this is the Christmas spirit. Happy 2019!
