José Mourinho's return to the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea FC comes as his side quickly renew acquaintance with FC Basel 1893. • The teams met in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-finals, the London club winning 5-2 on aggregate on their way to lifting the trophy. Previous meetings • Last season's games were the first competitive encounters between the sides. In the Switzerland first leg, David Luiz's stoppage-time free-kick earned Chelsea a 2-1 advantage after Fabian Schär's late penalty had cancelled out Victor Moses' first-half opener. • In the second leg Chelsea scored three goals in ten second-half minutes, through Fernando Torres, Moses and Luiz again, after Mohamed Salah had brought Basel level on aggregate on the stroke of half-time. Match background • After defeating Basel, Chelsea went on to beat SL Benfica 2-1 in the Amsterdam final thanks to Branislav Ivanović's header in the last minute of added time. Torres had fired Rafael Benítez's side ahead on the hour with Óscar Cardozo equalising from the spot. • With their win in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League, Chelsea thus became the first side to win UEFA's two top club competitions in reverse order in successive seasons. They also became only the fourth side to win all three of UEFA's major club competitions having also won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1970/71 and 1997/98. • The Blues have finished as group winners in seven of their last ten campaigns, qualifying for the knockout rounds as runners-up in two of the other years. Last year, however, they became the first UEFA Champions League holders to have their title defence ended in the group stage. • Although they won two games at home and drew the other, defeats at FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus left them third in Group E. They began with a 2-2 home draw with Juve, maintaing their unbeaten matchday one record of eight wins and three draws. • Mourinho, who has lifted the trophy with both FC Porto (2004) and FC Internazionale Milano (2010) and is bidding to become the first manager to win the European Cup with three different teams, is also defending an unbeaten matchday one record in his 11th consecutive UEFA Champions League campaign. In his first full season, 2002/03, Porto won the UEFA Cup and a domestic double. The next year they retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat of AS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen. • Joined Chelsea in 2004 and led the club to the League Cup and their first league championship for 50 years in his first season. Followed up with the league title again in 2006, and both the League Cup and FA Cup in 2007 but left the club that September. • Joined Inter in June 2008 and in his first campaign retained the Serie A crown, a feat the Nerazzurri repeated in 2009/10 when they also added the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League title, their first European crown since 1965. • Victory at the Santiago Bernabéu was Mourinho's last act as Inter coach before joining Madrid on a four-year deal. A campaign in Germany with Stuttgart, with whom he was a runner-up in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final against Chelsea FC, followed before he spent just over a season with Fenerbahçe. • Of Turkish descent, Yakin returned to Switzerland and Basel during 1999/2000, but was soon off to Kaiserslautern. Re-joined Basel permanently and gained the adoration of the northern club's support, registering seven goals in 32 games during the double-winning 2001/02 season and featuring in Basel's spectacular UEFA Champions League run the next term. • Made his international debut against the United Arab Emirates in September 1994 but was overlooked for EURO '96 and further disappointments followed as Switzerland failed to qualify for the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, as well as UEFA EURO 2000.
