    Welcome We welcome all the outstanding participants to the 2018 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships. And we wish a special welcome to all parents, coaches, and friends – all of whose support is invaluable. Our organization, the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation, does more than present national-caliber track and field and cross country events. We also actively support clinics and other meets with substantial financial commitments. Over the years, NSAF has grown from helping a few athletes to one that annually enables over 10,000 athletes to participate in various meets and activities. This is the 35th edition of the event, which has had various names since its inception in 1984. We are again happy to have New Balance as our title sponsor. New Balance is a wonderful part- ner – we have been together for eight years, and we expect to be together for many more years to come. We mourn the loss of Dr. Norbert Sander, who passed unexpectedly a few days after last year’s meet. Dr. Sander was the driving force in making The Armory what it is today. He is sorely missed.     Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida ties Texas A&M for title in first championship tie since 1978 -- It couldn’t have ended better for Florida. It couldn’t have ended worse for Texas A&M. Going into the final event Saturday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Texas A&M men held a nine-point lead ahead of second-place Florida in the team standings. That meant the Aggies would have to finish last in the 4x400 relay and the Gators would have to finish first in order for Texas A&M to lose sole possession of first place. And that’s exactly what happened. Going into the first handoff, Texas A&M runners Ricky Babineaux and Aldrich Bailey Jr. let the baton fall to the track. Babineaux picked it up, and the final three runners ran valiantly to try to catch up, but in the most improbable hypothetical coming to life, Texas A&M indeed finished the race last while Florida’s team crossed the line first. The two Southeastern Conference rivals each scored 53 points for the first shared NCAA title since 1978. Arkansas was third with 46.5. “The goal was for us to win the relay,” Florida coach Mike Holloway said. “I just told the guys, let’s go win the relay. We don’t see it as Texas A&M dropping the baton; we see it as we didn’t drop it. Success is where preparation meets opportunity. We had an opportunity, and we were prepared.” The result keeps the NCAA title in familiar territory: Texas A&M won three consecutive outdoor titles from 2009–11 before Florida won in 2012.

  • Olympic Trials Proved to Be the One Unfortunate Stumbling Block of the Year
    2016 Eugene – July 1 to July 10 The hosting of the Trials in Eugene three times in a row, for the second time, was unprecedented, and while the Trials saw no World Records on this occasion, they did produce a terrific series of marks and dramas. With live action in field events by NBC best described as minimal, US television did a typically poor job in covering what still remains as the best domestic track and field meeting in the world. The crowds and weather conditions were as follows: Attendance: July 1—20,987, July 2—21,866, July 3—22,424, July 4—21,713, July 7—21,835, July 8—22,256, July 9— 22,847, July 10—22,944 for a total of 176,972. (There was no admission charge for hammer day, July 6). It’s the second outdoor national title for the Gators since sharing the 2013 team championship. “It was really interesting how it happened,” said Florida head coach Mike Holloway. “I told my wife what I thought we could do, and that I thought that we could win this thing. It was just a matter of the kids trusting in themselves.” Arkansas, powered by the exploits of Jarrion Lawson’s three individual victories, finished as the team runner-up with 56 points while Texas A&M, fueled by a 800m collegiate record from freshman Donavan Brazier, placed third with 50 points. A pair of wins for Oregon, by Devon Allen in the 110m hurdlers and a 15th NCAA title for Edward Cheserek in winning the 5,000m, assisted the Ducks as they placed fourth with 48 points. LSU swept the relay events on the way to finishing fifth in team scoring with 41 points. Cheserek withstood another challenge at 5,000m with a winning time of 13:25.59. Stanford’s Sean McGorty (13:26.10) and Patrick Tiernan of Villanova (13:27.07) placed second and third after leading different stages of the race.

KeAndre Bates (20) and Grant Holloway (18) combined for 38. • A third consecutive title would make the Gators the first program to win three straight at NCAA Outdoors since Texas A&M did so from 2009-11.
