  • Bozovic for Ginzburg Text+Figs
On Ginzburg, Nobel, and atomic-layer engineering of room-temperature superconductors Ivan Bozovic Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton NY 11973-5000, USA Writing about Vitaly Lazarevich Ginzburg is a difficult task for anyone, and for me in particular. His important contributions to physics were so many, and spread over such a wide range of fields and topics, that very few scientists are really qualified to write competently about his entire oeu- vre - and I regret not being one of these. I did not live close enough to him for a long enough time to be qualified to write about his life – his family, collaborators, and disciples can tell so much more. Hence, when Academician Maksimov asked me to write an article for the “collection of memoirs” that comprises this volume, I felt quite out of my depth. My only qualification is that I admired and loved both Vitaly Lazarevich and Nina Ivanovna Ginzburg. As I still do, as does eve- ryone in my family. They are simply wonderful people, we love them dearly, and we always felt that these feeling were reciprocated. Nina Ivanovna, perhaps because she had no children of her own, always showed some maternal love for Natasha, my wife, and Marijeta, our younger daugh- ter who is a scholar in Russian literature and who would visit Nina and Vitaly each time she passed through Moscow. You can feel the warmth radiating out of Photo 1, taken in the Ginzburg’s home about a year before their historic trip to Stockholm. This friendship and love is my most precious possession and this is where I wish to start my personal account.

Bertil van Boer The Greatest Opera Never Written: Bengt Lidner’s Medea (1784) hen the Gustavian opera was inaugurated on 18 January 1773 with a performance of Johan Wellander and Fran- W cesco Antonio Baldassare Uttini’s Thetis och Pelée, the an- ticipation of the new cultural establishment was palpable among the audiences in the Swedish capital. In less than a year, the new king, Gustav III, had turned the entire leadership of the kingdom topsy-turvy through his bloodless coup d’état, and in the consolida- tion of his rulership, he had embarked upon a bold, even politically risky venture, the creation of a state-sponsored public opera that was to reflect a new cultural nationalism, with which he hoped to imbue the citizenry with an understanding of the special role he hoped they would play in the years to come.
