Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low. -

The grounds are looking good with the spring greenery, and I would like to commend Walter and the Building and Grounds Committee for the work that they have put into cleaning up the waterfront. It is nice to be able to see the lake without all the scrub and brush in the way. Spring Regatta was a success though there were a few green crews out there. -

Cruising Boat Skipper Information File
CRUISING BOAT SKIPPER INFORMATION FILE Revisions Adopted by Board October 5, 2016 This Cruising Boat Skipper Information File (SIF) sets forth the skipper responsibilities and SCOW procedures specific to the use of SCOW's three cruising boats – Rebecca (a 1980 Catalina 25, Hiatus (a 2003 Catalina 250), and Skirmish (a 1981 Capri 25), which are docked on G dock. The SIF supplements the SCOW Skipper Requirements and Boat Use Policy, which contains general procedures for use of all club boats. Cruising Skippers must be familiar with both and the Washington Sailing Marina Rules, which are posted on the Bylaws and Policies page of the SCOW website. This SIF only emphasizes important features of the boats; it is not an “instruction manual” on how to operate the boats. Detailed operating instructions, equipment inventories and stowage plans are on board each boat. Each skipper must be familiar with how to operate all of the systems on each boat. This SIF is not a substitute for a Cruising Boat class or other land/water training. Our boats are for enjoyment by all of our members. Take pride in our boats removing all trash and cleaning the cabin after use. Please scrub the deck and cockpit and wipe the cabin sole after each use. Stow equipment only where identified on the stowage list. Failing to return equipment to the proper location endangers the next crew, who could be unable to find equipment in an emergency. Refill the gas tank if less than 3/4 full (and it would be courteous if you filled the tank no matter what). -

FISHERS – the START and FIRST TEN YEARS and Beyond June 2014
FISHERS – THE START AND FIRST TEN YEARS and Beyond June 2014 My name is David Skellon. I started the FISHER business as a hobby in 1969, when I was a young Airline Pilot for BOAC (now British Airways). My UK home was Hamble on the South Coast close to Southampton, and my then wife Jo and I lived in a house called FAIRWAYS overlooking the marina. In 1967 I had bought a lovely old West Country fishing boat from a friend of mine: an original 1898 built Looe Lugger named “GUIDE ME”. In those days of long haul Airline flying the BOAC work pattern was a civilized round the World type trip, usually 3 – 4 weeks away, then 3 – 4 weeks at home. So I had plenty of spare time to work on this old 34ft lugger which had a long with a straight stem, straight keel and a very heavy displacement. I finished the conversion into a yacht with cabins, toilet, shower and wheelhouse, painted in the traditional colours: dark green hull, black bulwarks, red strake, grey superstructure. The original rig was a loose footed gaff sloop, which I changed to Ketch – brown sails! When finished, Jo and I, now with young baby Katherine, started cruising the Solent, South Coast, France and the West Country. Everywhere we went fellow Yachtsmen greeted us with great enthusiasm, like owning a vintage car. Time and again came the remark “what a lovely old ship, if only there was a modern fiberglass version”. I had already set up a small company – David Skellon Yachts Ltd – trading as FAIRWAYS MARINE, based in the annex to our house. -
