The North Vietnam- ese colonel pondered this remark a moment. “That may be so,” he replied, “but it is also irrelevant.” —Conversation in Hanoi, April 1975 1 This exchange captures the principal thesis of both books under review here. Specifically, the require- ments for success in war transcend the simple application of force, and Sun Tzu’s statement of them remains the most insightful. Strategic theorist Derek Yuen (PhD, Univ. of Reading) 2 maintains that, “despite its popularity in the Western world, The Art of War has rarely been understood correctly with due understanding of its Chinese context and Taoist roots.” Instead, readers see only “facile references to short one- to two- sentence axioms, aphorisms, and phrases...” (4). He means Deciphering Sun Tzu to open “new avenues for further research that can play an essential role in enhancing the Western understanding of Chinese strategy” (7); to that end, he emphasizes • the foundations of Chinese strategic thought and strategic culture, • the Tao Te Ching as a strategic text, • Lao Tzu’s place in Chinese strategic thought, • Chinese military dialectics, • the epistemology of Chinese strategy, • the “Easternization” of Western strategic thought, • the future direction of the study of Chinese strategic thought and culture, • a new general theory of strategy transcending the East and West. -
A Phenomenology of Color and Desire
Lorenzo Marinucci University of Rome Tor Vergata Iro A Phenomenology of Color and Desire This essay is a phenomenological analysis of the meanings expressed by the character 色 ( Jp. iro/shiki, Ch. sè). They include “color,” “love,” “eroticism,” “sensuous beauty,” and even “phenomenon.” Is this overlap fortuitous, or can we reach a deep insight on these apparently disparate elements by reflecting on色 ? Does the East Asian approach to color qua desire reveal something essential about both color and desire, heavily downplayed within European philosophy? I will address this phenomenological issue through five sections. First, we will consider Husserl’s description ofplena and Merleau-Ponty’s reflection on sexuality as metaphysics; then, the role of color as a paradigm for emotion in Japanese aesthetics will be addressed. Both these discourses will offer a new perspective on the Heart Sutra’s equation of 色 and “emptiness” (空). We will argue how and why Goethe’s theory of color shows a distinct affinity with these Asian sources. Lastly, I will highlight the interplay of all these elements in Kuki Shūzō’s The Struc- ture of Iki. Os conteúdos deste periódico de acesso aberto estão licenciados sob os termos da Licença Creative Commons Atribuição-UsoNãoComercial-ObrasDerivadasProibidas 3.0 Unported. 4 The syndrome of the house taken over* A síndrome da casa tomada **Eduardo Luft Abstract: To overcome the paradoxical situation in which the modern subject finds itself, on conceptualizing nature in such a way that its very presence in nature becomes inconceivable, modernity has supplied at least four alternatives: a) the first is to defend dualism (Descartes, Kant); b) the second option is to support a monism of nature (Spinoza, Hobbes); c) the third alternative is to defend a monism of subjectivity (Fichte); d) the fourth and last alternative is to support a dialectical monism (Schelling, Hegel). It is well known that, of these four alternatives to the self-interpretation crisis of modern subjectivity, the first ultimately had a more lasting influence on the philosophical scene, marking, point to point, this last breath of modernity that some call post-modern, which flows into the present situation of “hyperincommensurability” between subjectivity and nature, as diagnosed by Bruno Latour. The crisis of subjectivity thus becomes a crisis of philosophy, which ends up as a hostage to the syndrome of the house taken over. Keywords: Dialectical monism. Crisis of modern subjectivity. They both studied the Lu 527 emperor himself was also inclined toward it.4 He thereupon issued an order recruiting scholar-officials in the recommendation categories of Straightforward and Upright, Worthy and Excellent, and Learned.5 After this, as for giving instruction in the Songs, in Lu it was Master Shen Pei 申 培公, in Qi it was Master Yuan Gu 轅固生, and in Yan, it was Grand Tutor Han Ying 韓(嬰)太傅. -
