However, the club is open to both men and women golfers. The women golfers are the members and the men are the associates and referred to as Fellow Members. The Board of Directors consists of seven women. Dr. Boyce gave freely of his time and expertise, at no cost to the club, and the fine course that exists today will forever remain a tribute to him. The initial nine-hole course was opened on 18th September, 1971 and the second nine holes on 25th March the following year. The name McLeod was used to honour Miss Gertrude McLeod who had devoted her life to promoting women’s golf in Queensland. She was President of the Queensland Ladies Golf Union for 30 years and President of the Australian Ladies Golf Union for five years. The seed was sown and the growth of the club meant some very hard work needed to be undertaken to make this venture a success. The membership base increased and there was always someone willing and able to take on a land clearing task or fund raising venture. Some of their fund raising exercises were truly novel and unheard of in today’s society. The Founding Members and many of their spouses are held in high regard by all members. The Founding Members are honoured at the club’s Anniversary Day and Founders Day celebrations. On Founders Day, those who are able play in the Wednesday competition and along with other “Founders” are then acknowledged at a lunch with other members on the day. This tradition is one of the major events of the club. 9 The Course McLeod Country Golf Club enjoys a delightful traditional parkland course that all categories and standards of golfer will enjoy playing, the great design and multiple teeing positions presenting the opportunity for players of all abilities to truly test their game. ABOUT BROOKLAWN COUNTRY CLUB Brooklawn Country Club has a strong tradition of giving back to the game through the hosting of numerous amateur and professional championships, including four previous USGA championships: the 1974 U.S. Junior Amateur, won by David Nevatt; the 1979 U.S. Women’s Open, won by Jerilyn Britz; the 1987 U.S. Senior Open, won by Gary Player; and the 2003 U.S. Girls’ Junior, won by Sukjin‐Lee Wuesthoff. Brooklawn joined the United States Golf Association in 1896. The original golf course was a nine‐hole layout on what was then rolling farmland. The course was expanded to 18 holes in 1911. Almost 20 years later, A. W. Tillinghast, one of history’s premier golf architects who also designed courses at Winged Foot Golf Club, Baltusrol Golf Club, Bethpage State Park and Quaker Ridge Golf Club, redesigned the course at Brooklawn into its present form.
