(reg. 1765–1790) zu beschäftigen und damit mit jener Epoche, in der sich Galerien und Kabinette zu Museen und wissenschaft lichen Institutionen im modernen Verständnis wandelten.1 In bemerkenswert dichter zeit licher Abfolge ereigneten sich damals in Wien rund um den kaiser lichen Hof eine ganze Reihe von Sammlungsneuordnungen bzw. Sammlungsneuaufstellungen: die Neuordnungen der drei kaiserlichen Kabinette im Augustinergang, wo die Sammlungen Kaiser Franz I. Stephans nach dessen Tod präsentiert wurden, die kaiser liche Gemäldesammlung in der Neuaufstellung von 1781 im Oberen Belvedere und die 1785 gegründete medizinische Sammlung des Josephinums. Zwar wurden in den letzten Jahren diverse Studien zu den genannten Sammlungen publiziert,2 die sich auf ihre Geschichte und Entwicklung konzentrierten, selten jedoch wurden die institutionen- und disziplinenübergreifenden Bezüge zuein- ander, seien sie thematischer, methodischer oder personeller Natur, und ihre Wirkun- gen hinterfragt. Dies ist umso bemerkenswerter, als die verschiedenen Sammlungen in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts vergleichbare Prozesse der Musealisierung, der Verwissenschaftlichung und der Publizität durchliefen, die ihre Entwicklung bis heute bestimmen. Nicht nur fanden die Neuordnungen – mit der Spätzeit der Auf- klärung als Hintergrund und dem großen Einschnitt der Französischen Revolution – in einer Zeit des gesellschaft lichen Umbruchs statt, sondern die Sammlungen öffneten sich auch für ein allgemeines Publikum. Um Museen und Ausstellungswesen ver- änderten sich die wissenschaft lichen Diskurse, wurden neue Wissenschafts- und Kunst institutionen gegründet und etablierte Sammlungen einer öffentlichen Neu- bewertung unterzogen. Es ist das Ziel dieses Sammelbandes, durch die vergleichende Analyse der josephinischen Sammlungen die Prämissen, Kriterien, Methoden und Konzepte der Aufstellung, Präsentation und Inszenierung zu differenzieren und ein genaueres Bild darüber zu entwerfen, wie sich der allgemeine Wandel vollzog, der in Wissenschafts- und Kunst institutionen bis in die Gegenwart nachwirkt. 1 Die Publikation ging aus einer internationalen Tagung hervor, die unter dem Titel Schöne Wissen- schaften. Sammeln, Ordnen und Präsentieren unter Kaiser Joseph II. vom 19.–20. Juni 2017 von der Abteilung Kunstgeschichte des Instituts für kunst- und musikhistorische Forschungen (IKM) an der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien veranstaltet wurde. 2 Dazu zählen nicht zuletzt die Forschungen der Autorinnen, die für diese Publikation gewonnen werden konnten: Elisabeth Hassmann (Hassmann 2013, Hassmann 2015, Hassmann / Winter 2016), Christa Riedl-Dorn (Riedl-Dorn 1998, Riedl-Dorn 2009, Riedl-Dorn 2011), Anna Maerker (Maerker 2011, Maerker 2015), Nora Fischer (Fischer 2013a und b) und Debora Meijers (Meijers 1995, Meijers 2013, Meijers 2016). 8 Nora Fischer und Anna Mader-Kratky Die Idee zum Thema kam aufgrund von bestimmten Objekten bzw. Objektgrup- pen in der anatomischen Wachsmodellsammlung im Josephinum und in der kaiser- lichen Gemäldegalerie im Oberen Belvedere der 1780er-Jahre, deren Repräsentationen sich auf den ersten Blick zu widersprechen, bei genauerer Betrachtung jedoch span- nungsvoll zu bedingen scheinen: Zum einen fand sich im Josephinum in der Sammlung medizinischer Wachspräparate von 1785 ein Modell, das – in Anspielung auf die berühmte antike Venus, die in den Uffizien ausgestellt war – die „Nachahmung der Mediceischen Venus; mit herausnehmbaren Eingeweiden“3 genannt wurde, zum ande- ren in der kaiser lichen Galerie ein Arrangement von Gemälden, das vor allem wegen seines wissenschaft lichen Charakters gerühmt wurde.4 Auf der einen Seite steht also eine primär (natur-)wissenschaft liche Sammlung, die sich – auch – an den ästhetischen und anschau lichen Qualitäten der ausgestellten Werke

The French botanical vanguard settled on the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean where, beginning in the 1730s, a series of gardens contributed to France’s imperial fortunes and provided a model for later plant research networks in other European empires. In spite of past interpretations of French colonial science, there emergences a compelling argument that a dynamic interest in practical applications of scientific knowledge was present in the Indian Ocean region during this period.

    "The Capstone" An attempt to identify the 'Head of the Snake' Secret Societies Order of Hospitallers (link) The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of Hospitallers or simply Hospitallers, were a group of men attached to a hospital in Jerusalem that was founded by Blessed Gerard around 1023 out of which two major Orders of Chivalry evolved, the Order of the Knights of St. Lazarus and the Order of the Knights of St. John, later to be known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The Hospitallers arose around the work of an Amalfitan hospital located at the Muristan site in Jerusalem, founded around 1023 to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the Western Christian conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the organisation became a religious and military order under its own charter, and was charged with the care and defence of the Holy Land. Following the conquest of the Holy Land by Islamic forces, the Order operated from Rhodes, over which it was sovereign, and later from Malta where it administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily. The Order was weakened by Napoleon's capture of Malta in 1798 and became dispersed throughout Europe. It regained strength during the early 19th century as it repurposed itself towards humanitarian and religious causes. The modern continuation of the mediaeval Order is the Roman Catholic Sovereign Military Order of Malta, headquartered in Rome; allied Protestant orders are headquartered in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. The first master of the original Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was Brother Gerard (whose origins remain a mystery).

These issues and considerations are discussed below. No less than 32 crew members and donors were involved in the expedition’s bird collect- ing, as well as other natural history items. This sets the Baudin expedition apart from other successful expeditions such as those captained by James Cook, which had very few collectors on board. There were only up to three collectors for the first Cook expedition (1768-1771), up to six collectors for the second Cook expedition (1772-1775) and the same (Whitehead 1978) for the third Cook expedition (1776-1779). Other expeditions had a much lower number of collectors, usually only one. It proved to be of great value that the MNHN selected Jean-Batiste-Désiré Dumont, René Maugé, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, Stanislaus Levillain and François Péron as crew members. René Maugé was the main bird collector, although he also collected other natural history items too, and sailed aboard Le Géographe.

    Towards a European History of Concepts: an Introduction Karin Tilmans (European University Institute, Florence) The Dutch conceptual history project has been generously received by academic critics, who have praised it for charting a territory in Dutch history that had so far remained largely unexplored. Yet several reviewers of the first volumes of the project, stressed the need to further explore and develop the international and comparative dimensions of Dutch conceptual history. This suggestion is entirely justified and could be further extended to include other existing projects in conceptual history, for they all tend to write the history of concepts primarily in a national context. The intention of the current special issue, "Towards a European History of Concepts", is to begin to remedy this situation by placing the findings to date of the Dutch project in a European context. Such a publication not only benefits Dutch conceptual history, but also the conceptual history research being currently carried out in other European countries. There are, it would seem, two main ways to attempt to transcend the hitherto dominant national framework in the study of the history of concepts, both of which will be explored in the internationalization project here proposed. The first and most obvious one is systematically to compare the history of various key concepts in different European countries, over a longer period of time, in order to highlight the parallels and differences in national conceptual development. For example, by comparing the history of the Dutch concept of citizenship to the history of that same concept in Germany, England and France, important insights into both national peculiarities and common patterns of conceptual development may be gained.

E-mail: [email protected] (Received 20 August 2020; revised 19 October 2020; accepted 16 April 2021) Abstract As the “Indo-Pacific” concept gains currency in public discourses on foreign policy, it remains poorly understood as an idea, due to inadequate surveys of its intellectual origins and international visions in global contexts. This article studies Karl Haushofer’s theory of the “Indo-Pacific” as an organic and integral space primed for political consciousness. Haushofer not only laid the oceanographic foundation of the “Indo-Pacific” with novel evidence in marine sciences, ethnography, and philology, but also legitimated it as a social and political space. Mindful of Germany’s geopolitical predicament in the interwar period and informed by sources in indology and sinology, Haushofer envisaged the political resurrection of South, East, and Southeast Asia against colonial domination, and conceived the “Indo-Pacific” vision for remak- ing the international order. Introduction This paper studies the historical “Indo-Pacific” theory in its academic and political contexts. It traces this concept of oceanic space to the innovations of the German geographer Karl Haushofer (1869–1946). The purpose of his intervention, however, was to forge an anticolonial vision in British, American, and Western European colonies in South, East, and Southeast Asia, and thus undermine the Western rivals of interwar Germany.

He started as an anonymous staff member of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, which had been officially created in 1759. But a decade later, he was already taking a most active part in the successful development of this new institution’s world ambitions in botany. Francis Masson’s contribution to the botanical discoveries of his time has been regularly commented upon, but often times the articles have dealt with specific fields of his activities or they have presented the main events of his life for encyclopaedias.

We note evidence for the deliberate hybridization of the so-called Cape heaths by European horticulturists, in particular by the English nursery man William Rollisson and by the Very Rev. William Herbert. We discuss some of the nomenclatural consequences of the naming by miscellaneous botanists and nurserymen of the hundreds of new Erica species and hybrids, emphasizing the proliferation of eponyms. An appendix tabulates eponyms and their numerous orthographic variants published before 1835 within Erica, and provides the correct orthography for these epithets. We have also spent a great deal of enjoyable time, closer to home, in Ireland, Wales, England and many parts of Scotland. Our two daughters, Caitrin and Eilis, now grown-up, were with us on our earlier journeys. Caitrin and her partner, John have gone on to take our grand daughter, Aoife, on their trips to Europe. Eilis and her partner Luke have become an independent global travellers, visiting many places way beyond those Myra and I have ever reached. Many of the places we have visited have left Myra and myself in awe, either of their natural beauty, or of the human imagination and tenacity involved in their creation.
