Estimate: £300 - £500 + Fees and Sudan Egypt and Sudan Collection of official reports, offprints and other documents relating to the construction and heightening of the Low and connected projects, 1902-55, including some 30 official reports by H. E. Hurst and others, most of which issued by the Ministry of Public Works, Egypt (a few by the Survey Department, Egypt) and printed : Government Press [and others], 1906-50, all profusely illustrated with tables, maps, charts and photographic plates, many folding, all but one in original bindings (mostly cloth- backed boards), some minor soiling and wear, folio, together with approximately 15 offprints, mostly from the Proceedings of The Institution of Civil Engineers, 1914-49, similarly illustrated to the above, all in original or contemporary paper wrappers, a small number with wrappers detached, 8vo, plus 4 printed contracts and specifications for projects undertaken by engineers Goode, Fitzmaurice, Wilson & Mitchell for the Egyptian and Sudan Governments, 1922-33, and 3 works for general publication by Willcocks (Sir William): The Reservoir Dam at Assuan and After; The Assuan Reservoir and Lake Moeris; The Nile in 1904, all 1st editions, E. and F. N. Spon Limited, 1901-4, numerous plates (many folding), original cloth, rubbed, frontispiece of first work loose, 4to, and an assortment of similar material The Aswan Low Dam was first completed in 1902, and was raised between 1907 and 1912 and again between 1929 and 1933; the other projects covered here include barrages and irrigation work in the Nile Delta, the construction of the Sennar Dam, and general survey work. The authors of the reports include noted hydrologists H. E. Hurst (1880-1970), Sir Murdoch Macdonald (1866-1957), and others. Provenance: nearly all items with the dated contemporary ownership inscriptions of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan; several of the reports are inscribed 'with the author's complements'. The collection also contains a copy of his own report, The Problem of the Upper Nile (2nd edition, 1928), and an offprint of his article 'Run-Off of Main Drains in Lower Egypt' (1914). Qty: 2 CARTONS
