The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NENHP) maintains information on the condition and location of “at-risk” species within the state. At-risk species are defined as those that are rare or declining in Nebraska, unique to Nebraska, declining globally, or extirpated from Nebraska but still extant elsewhere. NENHP also tracks the condition of the various types of natural communities in the state, both rare and common. Conservation of these communities serves as a “coarse filter” to help conserve the majority of species and preclude their decline to at-risk status. All at-risk species and natural communities are considered a valuable state resource worthy of efforts to ensure their continued existence in Nebraska.

The list below shows the Natural Heritage conservation status ranks of at-risk species and natural communities (together ‘elements of biodiversity’ or ‘elements’) in the state. The conservation status rank is a relative measure of the element’s level of imperilment. Natural Heritage conservation status ranks are assigned using a standardized methodology developed by the network of Natural Heritage Programs (NHPs) and NatureServe. This system is used by the network to identify rare and imperiled species and natural communities, at both a global and state scale. NatureServe has the primary responsibility for developing global ranks. State ranks in Nebraska are developed by NENHP staff in collaboration with outside experts.

These ranks are used to prioritize efforts including on-the-ground conservation work, research, and data collection. NENHP maintains certain information on the known locations of many of these elements in a database. Decisions about what information is maintained are based on available resources and the value of the information for conservation. The list below shows NENHP’s 'tracking status' for each element.

This list is updated periodically. Corrections and suggestions are welcome.

LIST CONTENT AND FORMAT

The list includes all elements which are identified as at-risk of extirpation in Nebraska or which are already extirpated. The list is in the following order: , Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, , Freshwater Mussels, Snails, Crustaceans, Mayflies, Stoneflies, Dragonflies and Damselflies, Flies, Bees and Wasps, , , Beetles, Other , , Wetland/Aquatic Communities, and Upland/Terrestrial Communities.

The following information is presented for each element on the list: Global Natural Heritage Conservation Status Rank, State Natural Heritage Conservation Status Rank, Natural Legacy Plan Status, State Status, Federal Endangered Species Act Status, and NENHP Tracking Status. Further explanation of these terms appears in the Appendix.

GRANK and SRANK. Code indicating the natural heritage conservation status ranks for the species across its entire range (Grank or 'Global Rank') and in Nebraska only (Srank or 'State Rank'). State ranks are derived by NENHP staff in collaboration with outside experts.

The rank is a measure of the relative level of imperilment. Definitions for each value are below. Grank definitions are similar but use the world rather than the state as a geographic reference and refer to the risk of extinction rather than extirpation.

Rank Definition SX Presumed Extirpated-Species is believed to be extirpated from the state. Not located despite intensive searches of historical sites and other appropriate habitat, and virtually no likelihood that it will be rediscovered. SH Possibly Extirpated - Known from only historical records but still some hope of rediscovery. There is evidence that the species may no longer be present in the state, but not enough to state this with certainty. S1 Critically Imperiled- At very high risk of extirpation in the state due to very restricted range, very few populations or occurrences, very steep declines, severe threats, or other factors. S2 Imperiled- At high risk of extirpation in the state due to restricted range, few populations or occurrences, steep declines, severe threats, or other factors. S3 Vulnerable- At moderate risk of extirpation in the state due to a fairly restricted range, relatively few populations or occurrences, recent and widespread declines, threats, or other factors. S4 Apparently Secure- At a fairly low risk of extirpation in the state due to an extensive range and/or many populations or occurrences, but with possible cause for some concern as a result of local recent declines, threats, or other factors. S5 Secure- At very low or no risk of extirpation in the state due to a very extensive range, abundant populations or occurrences, with little to no concern from declines or threats.

S#S# Range Rank - A numeric range rank (e.g., S2S3 or S1S3) is used to indicate any range of uncertainty about the status of the species. Ranges cannot skip more than two ranks (e.g., SU is used rather than S1S4). SU Unrankable - Currently unrankable due to lack of information or due to substantially conflicting information about status or trends. SNR Unranked - State conservation status not yet assessed SNA Not Applicable - A conservation status rank is not applicable because the species is not a suitable target for conservation activities. T Rank applies to a subspecies or variety (only applicable for Global Ranks) Q Questionable classification?; a Q added to a rank denotes questionable taxonomy; it modifies the degree of imperilment and is only used in cases where the type would have a less imperiled rank if it were not recognized as a valid type (i.e., if it were combined with a more common community type); a GUQ rank often indicates that the type is unrankable because of daunting taxonomic questions

Note that occasionally more than one Grank is listed for an element. This indicates the state element is equivalent or partly equivalent to more than one global element. This happens most often for natural communities. For example there are two Granks for 'Mesic Bur Oak Forest and Woodland' because the Nebraska type as defined includes two global community types ('Northern Bur Oak Mesic Forest' and Western Tall-grass Bur Oak Mesic Woodland').

LEGACY STATUS. At-risk status of a species as designated in the Nebraska Natural Legacy Plan, Nebraska’s State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP). Tier 1 species are typically those that are globally most at-risk of extinction (Grank G1 to G3) and which occur in Nebraska. Tier 2 species are typically those that are not at-risk from a global or national perspective but are rare or imperiled within Nebraska (Grank G4 to G5 and Srank S1 to S3).

STATE. Status under the Nebraska Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act or the Nebraska Administrative Code. E=Endangered T=Threatened NC=Nongame Species in Need of Conservation.

FEDERAL. The federal legal status of the species as assigned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Federal status. Status under the federal Endangered Species Act. E=Endangered T=Threatened C=Candidate.

Code indicating whether the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program maintains information in its Natural Heritage Database for occurrences of the element (species or natural community) and whether all occurrences are tracked. Note that occasionally an element will be shown at the species and subspecies level. This is typically to accommodate tracking of records for which the species is identified but there is uncertainty regarding the subspecies identification.

Full Fully Tracked - Track all extant and selected historical occurrences of the element.

Partial Partially Tracked - Track selected extant occurrences. NENHP prioritizes the maintenance of data on high-quality natural communities and therefore all natural communities have a value of 'Partially Tracked.' For most of the tracked birds, only confirmed breeding locations are tracked.

Watchlist Track on a watch list only - The species may be of some current or potential conservation concern but data are not maintained in the database. Watchlist status is commonly assigned on the basis of lesser conservation concern compared to species tracked. Other reasons for assigning elements to the watchlist include uncertainty about the status (taxonomic distinctness, uncertain element rank, native status), maintenance of information by another program (Whooping Crane is the most prominent example), and that the species is too mobile or widespread to be tracked effectively with available resources.
